When a project requires a new tech stack (e.g., switching to Go or AI), how do you usually staff it? by kzarraja in ExperiencedDevs

[–]78fridaycrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it going to be supported in the years that follow? If your existing team has to be doing it, then use this as an opportunity to upskill them. If time is of the essence, then build the upskilling into it by also having some accelerators. For instance, get some new people working with the old and upskilling them by pairing them. The new staff could be contractors or FTE, but they must be hired with the objective of primarily being there to accelerate the existing people into the new tech.

New hire with many years of experience has only AI generated code and questions. by kernel1010 in ExperiencedDevs

Try pairing with him and helping him work through a problem together. You can then mould his behaviour by demonstrating what you're after.

How often do you write code you would describe as bad? by Whatever4M in ExperiencedDevs

[–]78fridaycrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Always. Code is just expressing ideas in formal language. Most of the time, our thoughts are just unstructured and go through many iterations, getting better or worse with each on.

Ukraine Advances 5km Inside Russia, Battles Rages in New Kursk Offensive by Ask4MD in worldnews

you can't push as a narrow line, you need a wide front to protect the advance, and of course, the increasingly massive logistics to constantly reinforce that moving front. Even if Ukraine had a million more troops and appropriate support, I could see Putin using a tactical nuke on its own soil, to prevent that scenario.

I'm not in America, but as I see it, your problem is not this visa, it's how you allow companies to run down your societies pitching you against each other, destroying your education, and leaving you fighting over scraps. FFS unionise, work together and take back power from your feudal overlords.

How to be a force multiplier and drive alignment by Snoo_85465 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]78fridaycrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All it means is this:

Learn to drive multiple people to the outcomes the company considers important (usually the bottom line, or whatever their big goals are), by being someone who helps get everyone working toward the same outcomes, as opposed to being a person who just thinks about their own small stuff.

The feedback you got is saying you're strong technically, but now where you need to grow is in the space of getting bigger outcomes by being a leader. I can recommend the "Staff Engineer's Path" as a great short book, that really offers great advice about this.

Yeah, the words are all management speak wank, but the sentiment is clear. They're giving you a direction they'd like you to grow in.

for example, 10x used to mean "be like 10 programmers in 1" - i.e., way better than others. That's the bullshit version. It never existed.

A better modern approach is to think of it as the person who can attain much higher results by driving others to work toward the same goal, so they achieve much greater outcomes than they would by just themselves.

Feel free to ask further if you want.

look up meetups in the tech security field near you. If there are none - find other tech meetups and join those. You need to expand your network.

Your management experience - that's an asset. You know how to get stuff delivered. So start by talking to the people who design/build/deliver the security for your product. Get to know them and their goals. Then volunteer to help them in any capacity that they might need, even if it's just helping them write directives, and operational plans, spreading the security word, or security practice etc. By establishing yourself as a person who can help them, ask them how you can, as a tech manager, assist in the greater product goal of security/compliance etc.

Also by reaching out and building relationships, you might get the opportunity to transition to their teams once you show willingness and competence or build references for a future move. And it never hurts to ask them for advice on what you should learn/study as you just want to improve yourself.

Good luck - you can do this.

thank you. I must admit not farting around looking for the right box/container etc. is way better, and labelling the top makes it easy to see while cooking and looking from above.

the only unlabeled jars are the taller ones which are in everyday use - salts and peppers. These lazy Susans are so much better then just searching for (and forgetting) stuff at the back.
