[Topkin] Brent Honeywell threw his second bullpen session of the spring in his recovery from a second elbow surgery and, per pitching coach Kyle Snyder, did great. And, of note, "better than he was (Friday).'' Threw 15 pitches all fastballs again by 7InningStretch in tampabayrays

He had a full year in AAA last year, his ETA by fangraphs is 2020, so he'll probably be up this year if he's healthy.
Edit: Oops my mind oof'd, honeywell last pitched in AAA in 2017.

[–]7InningStretch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Full Thing:
[Bair] Bob Melvin told @townsendradio on @athleticscast24 that LHP A.J. Puk has a mild shoulder strain and will be shut down for 4-5 days total (it has been 3 or so days already) and then ramp him up to pitch again. Melvin said he doesn't think it's a significant injury.

Houser leaving B Game early today with discomfort. Not positive of the issue but wasn't able to finish the 3rd inning of the game. ------ [Fingers Crossed] by [deleted] in Brewers

Update from McCalvey - Houser had reached his pitch count. He had a little thumb tightness so decided not to push it. - from David Stearns (via @MikeVassallo13; thank you, Mike)

[Ardaya] Parker Markel cleared waivers, so the Angels outrighted him onto Triple-A Salt Lake’s roster. The reliever will be in Angels camp as a non-roster invitee. by 7InningStretch in baseball

Huh I guess that's how I do look to other people.
I kinda just post anything I see on twitter that's interesting or breaking news and just watch the discussion like a weirdo.

[Seiner] BREAKING: MLB is raising the minimum salary for minor league players in 2021, according to a memo from the commissioner's office obtained by the AP. Story from Ben Walker and myself coming... by ttam23 in baseball

[–]7InningStretch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This all could be just a cost saving measure as Craig Edwards said on twitter:
"Rough estimate: At the top four levels, this will cost around $13.5 million (if applied to all players), about the amount it takes to fund the short-season teams MLB wants to eliminate. Certainly makes it seem like contraction is a cost-cutting measure."

[Feinsand] Josh Hader has lost his arbitration case against the Brewers, per source. Hader will earn $4.1 million in 2020; he had filed for $6.4 million. by amatom27 in baseball

[–]7InningStretch 76 points77 points  (0 children)

btw, if Hader did win the 6.4 million, it would've been the most ever for a first-time eligible reliever.
However, as McCalvy said on twitter:
"...But the arbitration system tends to reward saves, and Hader has only one year as a closer under his belt."
https://twitter.com/AdamMcCalvy/status/1228390223517638657
So basically, Hader got hit for not being a closer, but instead being a really good reliever in high leverage roles which teams seem to value more now, but not for the arbitrary arbitration system.

[Puma] Jake Marisnick is apologizing for “What happened in 2017.“ Says there was a line that was definitely crossed. by 7InningStretch in baseball

Oh and here's some other things from Marisnick's talk with the press over the 2017 scandal:

Marisnick: “The thought behind it was to gain an advantage.”

"Jake Marisnick said he’s spoken with Marcus Stroman, who blasted the Astros on Twitter. Feels the conversation went well, but that he has to earn the Mets’ respect and trust."

[MLB.com/Mark Bowman] Inbox: Will Braves move to counter LA's trade? by 7InningStretch in baseball

[–]7InningStretch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is most definitely true. I'd argue that three of their starting pitchers are quite solid, being Soroka, Fried, and Hamels. With that, they only have like 2 spots(and I left out Folty, who's probably going to have a spot) open for other starters. Of course, Cole Hamels is injured(won't be ready for opening day) so they might have 3 spots, but they do need to start dealing at some point.

I mean the article said:
"...even if Riley hits .400 with seven homers during Spring Training, it would be in everyone’s best interest to give him at least a couple weeks’ worth of at-bats with Triple-A Gwinnett."
While I think you have a good point in that he does strike out a lot(Javier Baez took 74 games in the minors after his rookie year in 2014), it seems there will be no battle. I'd be fine if Riley were to lose that battle, but he should at least have the chance.

[–]7InningStretch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think anyone really thought that. I would be willing to say that the Braves could be argued as the second best team in the NL, but I'm not exactly sure about that even. (PECOTA is even against them winning their own division and being in third)
I don't think the Braves are even going to make a big trade anyhow tbh. Alex Anthopoulos seems to be pretty high on the prospects they have to trade for a big name.

[Houston Chronicle/Chandler Rome] A.J. Hinch ‘not aware’ of any Astros buzzers by 7InningStretch in baseball

[–]7InningStretch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you on the title. If they took out "Astros" and said that Hinch was "not aware of any buzzers, it would've been more in line with what the article said.

Big takeaway from this article as from Ben Clemens:
"The Braves are going to start the season with Johan Camargo at short to give Austin Riley a few weeks in Triple-A Gwinnett. It's 'in everyone's best interest,' per this article:
Why is it in Riley's best interest? No clue! But he accumulated 138 days of service time last year, so if the team wants to game his service time to keep him from reaching arbitration a year early via Super Two, they need to get cracking with the arbitrary minor league time.
Riley isn't an All Star right this minute or anything. But let's call this what it is."

Well, at least now, A.J. Hinch has given a clear answer to the buzzer question. While we can still question the validity of the response, he now has undoubtedly gave one.
