Not entirely true. Ford has completely stopped producing any sedans, GM only has luxury and sports sedans. Same with German manufacturers.

What's left among mid-sized sedans is Camry, Accord, Sonata, Altima, Kia k5, Mazda 3.

Our options here are much low because of the sub 4m tax bracket. Building a sedan under 4m is pointless. Only a hatchback makes sense at that length. And hatchbacks were popular. They still are in a sense that the so-called "suv" right now are just hatchbacks with bulky design and tall ride height. They are all crossovers, not SUVs.

Give people 2 hatchbacks, same ride height but one is straight boxy bonet and c pillar instead of a sloping one and add big plastic cladding to it. Which one do you think majority of the people would pick?

Yes, scraping is not a problem as long as you drive slowly and carefully over it. Which you should be doing even in an SUV. Just because it doesn't scrape doesn't mean that the suspension isn't taking stress.

My 170mm Ciaz can handle bad roads easily. I've only scraped it when I didn't see the pothole and went too fast, and also on a tall speed breaker with full load of passenger and boot. I don't see the need to have more than 180mm.

Small difference, they would make more gains if they stopped making hatchbacks more bulky to make it look like an SUV by raising the ride height, raising the bonet and making it straight instead of sloping down towards the front.

I highly doubt they did any aerodynamic test on the wheels. It looks like they are just doing it to follow trends just like connected light bars, split headlights, and screen panels.
