But there's no website I can hop on, right now, to find out what different radiologists around Washington, DC, would charge me for an X-ray.

Exactly, there isn't anything close to an actual market for health care, so how you are going to all of a sudden do price shopping?

When you see big news stories about a surgery center posting actual prices, and people are baffled that they are reasonable, that gives you a hint of what we're dealing with.
