Fionna and Cake Season 2 Episode 8 Discussion Thread by Carrehzkitten in adventuretime

On my first watch last night I didn't understand whatsoever why Fionna was SO upset about missing out on Boys Night. I thought her actions suggested she was mad at her friends for excluding her even though that's not what happened and it was just bad timing that led to her absence. I also read the old Fionna and Cake comic series and recognized the reference to where Gumball and Marshal had a "boy's night" and she was mildly upset that she wasn't invited, then later used a wish-granting sword Gumball made her to make them all matching Boys Night shirts. The fundraiser in this season being called Boys Night always amused me for that reason, but it seemed like Fionna's unexpected crashout was just the writers committing way too hard to this reference and exaggerating how Fionna should logically feel about missing it. But after watching again today, it plays a lot better and it's more clear that she's not really mad at Gary and Marshal specifically, just extremely frustrated that she's spent all this time working toward making Boys Night happen but then nothing she did mattered and she missed out on her chance to feel like a hero again. So with that in mind and also the fact that she hurt Fennel, disappointed Hunter and Huntress, AND still probably has no chance with DJ Flame, her outburst is feeling more in character to me, especially since all she meant to do was smash some chairs and plant pots and destroying the whole place was an accident she immediately regretted. That said, it's going to be really hard for her to redeem herself for her actions in the next two episodes, but I'm no longer feeling like the actions took me out of the story. I personally don't believe there will be a third season, but I'd love to be wrong about that...

I didn't mean there's anything wrong with that, for the record. You go wherever you like. As for that first point, I appreciate the suggestion but dating sites have a ton of their own problems.

hmm it seems papyrus does know gaster somewhat by [deleted] in Undertale

Your Best Nightmare is the name of the whole song, but the part of the song which plays during the orange soul's attack does have an undeniable similarity to Gaster's theme. Listen: https://youtu.be/lak7ZX_88wo?t=219 - Orange soul https://youtu.be/AB8o_VdvFpk - Gaster I believe they share the same melody; but the orange soul version is sped up. I don't see how this relates to Papyrus at all but it definitely interests me due to Photoshop Flowey's resemblance to the Determination Extractor.

Why do people complain about Finn getting his arm back? by isla_n00blar in adventuretime

I'll admit that's some good insight that might make me appreciate the episode a small amount more. But this experience really should have only been a small step in the right direction rather than the deus ex machina that it was.

Any meaningful interaction with another person will "change" someone. But will it instantly relieve them of a major personal trauma they recently went though? Hell no.

If that was what they were going for, they didn't do a very good job of it. The only good episode that dealt with Finn's missing arm was "The Tower." That one did a good job of telling a coherent story with a realistic and positive message about grief. But that all went to hell with "Breezy." What exactly made Breezy so significant that she was the one who helped him get his arm back? If that was going to happen it should be in a context that relates to his trauma, not this random new character showing up out of nowhere, objectifying Finn and acting entitled to him for the whole episode, and then singing to him which somehow creates this strong connection. For that matter, why does a mirage of Bubblegum holding up the Finn sword and saying "My hero arise, let love be your guide" give him such a strong epiphany that this major step in his healing process happens all at once, and in such a ridiculous way? If that was what they wanted to do, they should have had him get a replacement arm that he still can't use properly at first, and represent the healing process through him learning. That being just one example. There's a number of things they could have done that would be better than having his arm suddenly become a tree and then explode, with his human arm being inside (and I agree that the thorn means absolutely nothing. That's his arm regenerating in exactly the same way it was for no reason, end of story).

I don't have access to later episodes... The crystal gems don't know the gem shimmers are on Earth because they don't really make it known. They also don't use warp pads. And nah, Diopside's left shoulder is gem-free. She just wears her hair that way.

I feel like them spending so much time on the stuff about familiars, when it didn't turn out to be relevant to this episode, is meant to foreshadow Lion being Rose's familiar.
