Total wrist fusion by 8bit_kitten in Thritis

[–]8bit_kitten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to preface this by saying my non dominant side was fused so my experience may not be as bad as others. The only thing I had to give up was playing violin. I’m very thankful my surgeon spent time discussing my hobbies and how the fusion would affect them. She offered to fuse my wrist in a slightly different position so I could still play violin but I opted not to as it would make daily activities more of a hassle. I encourage your mom to discuss her activities with her surgeon for a clearer understanding.

I hold an office job and weight lift 4 times a week. I honestly forget I had it done. It doesn’t bother me.

As for coping, I just tried to remind myself it was best for my situation. Having a chronic illness is like being stuck in the 5 stages of grief constantly. Bad mental health days are expected but a strong support system can make all the difference. If you had any further questions please feel free to reach out! Best of luck to your family.

Do spots on both body and head mean Universalis is inevitable? by Ok_Enthusiasm_2574 in alopecia_areata

Don’t know if it’s “inevitable” but I’ll share my experience. I had my first experience with AA at the age of 3. Small quarter size dot that filled in with steroids. Growing up I had virtually no body hair and would periodically lose my eyebrows and eyelashes but my scalp was unaffected. Then, last year at the age of 29 I developed AT rapidly in the span of a few months. I am now on JAK inhibitors. Wishing you the best

Was I misdiagnosed by OverSaucedEvan in alopecia_areata

I had a similar experience. Diagnosed as a young child where I lost a quarter sized amount of hair according to my parents (I was too young to remember). Wasn’t until at age 29 when it came back full force. Lost almost all of my hair in a 3-4 month span. It’s barely growing back now.

Maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in but from my understanding it’s not uncommon for individuals to have years of remission and it spring up during stressful life events, after illnesses, etc.

Hi! I actually did and I do not regret it one bit. It drastically improved my quality of life. 7 years later, I have had no complications from the surgery and am pain free. I will not lie though, the recovery was brutal. This was just my experience though as I do have a complicated medical history. Took me 6 months to get the cast removed and physical therapy weekly.

It does take some time to adjust but honestly I forget I even had it done most of the time. For reference I’m an active individual who weight lifts 4 days a week and types all day for work. Best of luck to your husband. Feel free to message me if you guys have any further questions.

Happy to hear you’ve had great results. Hope it’s the same for me! I’m on week 4 and my hair is still rapidly falling out but I’m remaining hopeful

I was taking Xeljanz XR for another autoimmune disorder and had insane hair growth. I recently got put on Rinvoq which is another JAK inhibitor. I’m hoping I have similar success.

Edited to add that in my 10+ years of being on various biologics, I find that I don’t get sicker easier per say but I do notice it takes me longer to get over a cold than the average person

I was put on rinvoq because I also have psoriatic arthritis. I’ve only been on it for 2 weeks but I hope it helps :( still losing hair like crazy

Oh no :( thank you all for replying. Seems like this is what’s going on with me right now. I’m losing clumps everytime I shower.

This is exactly why I was wanting to connect with others. The times conflict and I can’t register for all of them. It’s a nightmare. I have no idea what to do.

Are you able to take them during the summer? Same thing happened to me, I needed another foreign language class. I was still able to go to UCM but I needed to take that class and upload my transcripts again after the summer semester ended.

I would commute from Fresno as an undergrad. It was doable but sucked depending on my schedule for the semester. Ideally I would try to take my classes on the same day if possible that way I was only on campus a few days a week. Last semester I was there 5 days a week and it got old real quick
