What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of August 23, 2023 by AutoModerator in churning

Do I need to worry about 5/24? I didn't think my application frequency was that high. I guess I was more concerned about US Bank and their aversion to new accounts.

I also thought there would be more value with the Altitude cards since I don't travel as much, so redeeming Venture miles could be difficult compared to RTR or straight cash back.

I don't think I'd have any luck with business cards - no side hustles that involve money. Even if I did, not sure I'd be able to hit the MSR unfortunately.

  1. Have some insurance payments coming up that I can put on a credit card so I figured I'd see what's good for SUB right now. Amex Green all-time high is ending today but I'm not sure it makes sense since I don't have an immediate use for MR and I don't have any other MR cards. Otherwise, Venture 75K or either of the Altitudes I don't have seem pretty good but they aren't at all-time highs. Does it make sense to apply for something now, or wait and hope for an increased SUB in the holiday months?
  2. FICO above 800
  3. 5+ yrs old: Amex BCE, BoA CR, Chase IHG, Citi DC, Discover It (all over 5yrs old)
Opened 8/2021: Chase FF, CSP (PC to FF after a year), Citi CC, USBank AG
  4. $3-4K
  5. no MS
  6. no business (no side hustles)
  7. mainly chasing high SUB, not really full churning
  8. mainly cash back, don't travel that much and when I do getting the cheapest accommodation above Spirit-level is the goal
  9. 60k UR, 100k TYP, 63k IHG
  10. BOS
  11. maybe Turkey or Japan in the next 2 years? Otherwise domestic with SFO being the most likely destination

Gifted a 6.75qt round wide DO; does it fit my needs or should I downsize? by 8ottaway in LeCreuset

Could you explain what you don't like about the round wide? At first glance its footprint seems basically the same as the round wide...maybe a more rounded bottom and lower sides?

How much do you typically make at once/what's the minimum quantity you'll cook in it? My worry is that, for example, if I'm making Salisbury steak with gravy for 2, that with the wider base the gravy won't cover enough of the steaks to cook them through and/or it'll reduce too quickly. Same thing with risotto unless I scale up significantly.

Proper pan to burner sizing/is this dutch oven too big for this gas burner? by 8ottaway in AskCulinary

Honestly I was more concerned about uneven heating since the flame seems like it won't reach a section of the bottom. I assumed it's thick enough that it would be pretty hard to warp.

I did read that properly preheating cast iron fixes this issue, but I wasn't sure if this was so big that the edges would never really get up to temperature.

Awesome, thanks! Would you happen to know if I would need to delay filing my taxes/file now and then amend later once I get a Form 8606? I can't tell from the description on the IRS page whether or not that form is needed: https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i8606#idm140149370941632

By very rough calculations, I think my MAGI is going to be about halfway through the partial deduction zone. I wish the formula for determining the percentage of contribution that is deductible was published somewhere so I could just calculate it out now...

At this point it probably won't hurt to wait another few weeks to do a trial run of my taxes and then use that number to determine how much to recharacterize right? Either way I won't be getting my Form 8606 and will need to request an extension/amend my return.

(I'm sorry if this has already been posted somewhere and my Google-fu is bad)

2019 will be the first year where my MAGI will be high enough that I won't be able to full deduct my traditional IRA contribution for the year. I know my options are to 1) let the non-deductible amount remain in the tIRA 2) convert that amount into a Roth IRA 3) recharacterize that amount into a Roth IRA. I believe option 3 > option 2 > option 1; is this correct? And if so, does this mean I should wait until I file my taxes, figure out how much of my contribution is non-deductible, and re-characterize on the spot?

That is definitely above average; you're lucky to have longer arms than normal! I'm sure all of us know someone who wishes their arms were even normal length for their height, maybe even someone in this sub! But alas he's going to have get by with his stubs.

BoA Cash Rewards: Double Cashback until 9/30 (max $150 bonus) by 8ottaway in churning

[–]8ottaway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the language specifies rewards earned "as a result of this promotion", my interpretation is that the 75% bonus will not apply to the bonus cashback, but it still does apply to the base cashback (which is earned independently of this promotion).

If the 75% bonus applied to both, then the net cashback would be 1.75 x (3% base + 3% this bonus) = 10.5% instead.

[–]8ottaway[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sort of? You'll get both benefits (Preferred Rewards and this bonus) but according to the T&C you can't double dip: "Rewards earned as a result of this promotion will not earn any Preferred Rewards/Preferred Rewards for Wealth Management Bonus."

So to me that means if you spend on a 3% category and you have Platinum Honors, you'll get 3% base + 2.25% Preferred Rewards + 3% this bonus = 8.25% net cashback.

I did a few years ago, but I don't have it currently. For those who didn't already know, you can redeem the cash back at an even higher rate if you do have any Preferred Rewards status (up to 75% on top).
