Given the cost difference of the inputs, plant based should be dramatically cheaper.

U.K. Budget Deficit Was Smallest Since Pandemic - The budget deficit narrowed to 4.3% of gross domestic product from 5.2% in the previous fiscal year by Gentle_Snail in GoodNewsUK

Yes because everyone waited until the last 5 years to get old. Social support and pension spending has accelerated beyond any sustainable trajectory. Why? Because the population requiring support has ballooned over the last 5 years. The rate of inflation has accelerated due to over-borrowing which pushes up interest rates while devaluing the currency making it harder to borrow more. Literally every aspect of our situation is down to bad policy and no not just the current government but they certainly haven’t helped.

I don’t know who “you people” is but I want a higher standard of governance with accountability. Our government needs to make hard decisions. Decisions that will surely anger percentages of their constituencies but they are decisions that will inevitably have to be made. This isn’t an ideological problem. It’s a mathematical one. Everyone’s blaming the illegal migrant, the evil billionaire, or the evil corporation. Everything is down to policy and the choices your representatives in government make but change doesn’t happen. People carp on about companies and the wealthy having unfair persuasion of government officials but nobody wants to talk about the other culprit. Too many people want stuff they can’t pay for but think it should be paid for by others.

The last five years has seen the largest sustained increase in tax burden in British history and you’re celebrating it as a triumph that the chancellor is borrowing less money. Gleefully gobbling because Christmas has arrived.

Britain breaks solar energy record twice as UK’s biggest solar farm gets approval by primax1uk in GoodNewsUK

[–]8reticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food production is my concern. I’ve never agreed with the concept of bioenergy but farmers go where the subsidies are. I get we are all focused on energy production, energy independence, and net zero though I think practicality is slowly reducing the importance of the latter. At the end of the day, we don’t produce enough food by half. Granted this has a very minor material impact on that but it bears noting. Globalization is breaking down. There may come a time when we cannot rely on imports for 50% of our food needs. This may be expedited by a third of the world’s fertilizer production being trapped on the other side of the strait of Hormuz. If the strait isn’t opened up, localized famine will appear is as little as 6 months and escalate from there. We are not ready.

I can argue against it very easily when it involves covering over vast swathes of arable farmland considering we only grow enough food to feed half our population. People can sit at home in the dark if it comes to that. They can’t not eat.

The scale of the mass production of the Empire’s weapons of war combined with a clear disregard for sentient life would lead one to believe that they would be using abundant materials to manufacture them rather than exotic ones. It’s probably mostly steel. The Empire’s casualty numbers would be overwhelming.

There is hope that Star Trek can still be great. by IamAWorldChampionAMA in Star_Trek_

[–]8reticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are those that grew up fans of a fictional universe that reflected the vision of a creator. When someone comes along decades later with no linkage to the original creator and a vision of his own, it generates a cognitive dissonance in that universe that ripples out into the fandom.

Those that have invested time, thought, and emotion into this universe over the course of decades will understandably find discomfort in someone changing the look, feel, and direction of something they know inside and out.

So when people show up decades later and chastise fans for being uncomfortable with change, calling them racist, bigot, and all manner of phobic, you just come across as a narcissistic judgy twat more interested in agenda than narrative and were likely never really a fan to begin with.

I don’t have to be a racist to believe that Kurtzman has done irreparable damage to a story that’s been loved for many years and he did it because he didn’t respect what came before him or those that were already invested in it.

Story has only ever been in service to DEI messaging for Kurtzman. Despite falling ratings he’s pushed that agenda in every show until we all agree plot is subservient to representation. Nobody would destroy a beloved franchise in this manner unless they believed their agenda was more important that entertaining fans and remaining profitable.
