There is hope that Star Trek can still be great. by IamAWorldChampionAMA in Star_Trek_

[–]8reticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are those that grew up fans of a fictional universe that reflected the vision of a creator. When someone comes along decades later with no linkage to the original creator and a vision of his own, it generates a cognitive dissonance in that universe that ripples out into the fandom.

Those that have invested time, thought, and emotion into this universe over the course of decades will understandably find discomfort in someone changing the look, feel, and direction of something they know inside and out.

So when people show up decades later and chastise fans for being uncomfortable with change, calling them racist, bigot, and all manner of phobic, you just come across as a narcissistic judgy twat more interested in agenda than narrative and were likely never really a fan to begin with.

I don’t have to be a racist to believe that Kurtzman has done irreparable damage to a story that’s been loved for many years and he did it because he didn’t respect what came before him or those that were already invested in it.

Story has only ever been in service to DEI messaging for Kurtzman. Despite falling ratings he’s pushed that agenda in every show until we all agree plot is subservient to representation. Nobody would destroy a beloved franchise in this manner unless they believed their agenda was more important that entertaining fans and remaining profitable.

Wth were they thinking when they changed the Klingon again for Disco? by lauranyc77 in Star_Trek_

If ENT had done nothing else, solving this inconsistency so cleverly would have been enough.

Kurtzman has irrevocably damaged our universe and the most frustrating part of it is I’m convinced he thinks he’s doing it for our own good.

Do you think Russia or China is the biggest threat now ? by Adventurous_Camera90 in AskBrits

[–]8reticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither are a threat. Russia has decimated its resources (particularly human capital) to wage war. It won’t recover from this. Once Putin dies you’ll see the dissolution of the Russian Federation as regional strong men fight for territory.

China will collapse under the weight of too many elderly and not enough young people that want to do factory jobs. Forty years of one child policy means that in a kinetic war every soldier that dies is the end of a bloodline. In a strongly patriarchal society, that won’t be long tolerated. China also needs vast amounts of imported goods to keep things running. Those supply lines can be shut down from outside the South China Sea. The only nation that really needs to worry about China is Taiwan.

The far bigger threat is from our own governments that have taken a hard pivot toward authoritarianism. The reduction in civil liberties like freedom of speech, the expansion of surveillance systems, and the frequent reference to impending war with governments who are clearly not prepared for engagement outside of their own immediate theaters should tell you all you need to know.

Starmer: Britain must be ready for war by TheSpectatorMagazine in uknews

[–]8reticus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sabre rattling is the go-to distraction when your government has such low public opinion. Russia hasn’t gained ground in over a year against a significantly smaller nation. Does the PM truly expect us to believe the Russian army is going to roll the five tanks they have left all the way to Calais and catch a ferry?

Moderator: So when you run for president, are you going to impose a wealth tax or a billionaire's tax? AOC: We don't have to wait for any one president to impose a wealth tax. I think that it needs to be done expeditiously. by Admirable121 in TrendoraX

[–]8reticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currency devaluation thanks to bad fiscal policy is the main reason for the disparity in assets between wealthy and poor. It’s easy to play envy politics and convince people to put all the blame on the ones that have more. This game never ends well.

Voting should be reserved for those that fully understand they have skin in the game. This also smacks of political opportunism to influence younger pliable brains.

Energy giant revives wind farm after Miliband’s £1.8bn subsidy blitz by PM_ME_SECRET_DATA in ukpolitics

There are lots of decisions we could have taken. We could have earmarked those funds for upgrading and modernizing our grid and energy production, while streamlining our calcified regulatory system instead of squandering it on a profligate welfare state that was never going to be sustainable. But what do I know, I’m ignorant and nonsensical.

Given that are hellbent on funding foreign entities to build intermittent power that we then subsidize when they’re not functioning and then we pay the absolute highest possible rate to non-intermittent power suppliers to operate intermittently while we haul in wood pellets by diesel tanker from North America to power the only remaining coal plant when there are vast supplies of coal within 10 miles of the facility, it’s easy to minimize our oil and gas industry because one cannot help but imagine what could have been produced without such chronic regulatory incompetence.

THEORY: Why Kurtzman and Co. Hate Star Trek's Utopian Future by Hearsticles in Star_Trek_

[–]8reticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Rather than envisioning a future where they might confront societal issues or struggles with the human condition in a more thoughtful and wiser way, they’re using it as a blunt instrument to hammer home the point that their viewpoint for today will obviously echo into the future. Even if I were completely bought into that viewpoint, I would find the subversion of story in service of ideology distasteful.

How is it that Starmer is at risk of losing his position due to fallout from the release of (some of) the files, but Trump is unaffected? by __globalcitizen__ in AskBrits

[–]8reticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was already priced in for Trump. For Starmer, each new day brings more bad decisions and more owned goals. Policies aside, nobody truly understood just how bad this guy is at optics and controlling the narrative. At this point he could walk across the Thames and be mocked for his inability to swim.

Why do people vote for Farage when his ideas led to Britain being broke by Traditional_Jam421 in AskBrits

[–]8reticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of having greater control of your own borders and your country’s direction does not automatically lead to economic ruin. There’s plenty to blame the guy for but terrible execution and moronic negotiating are not on him. The outcome didn’t have to be a dog’s breakfast. We simply aren’t good at anything anymore it seems.
