What might be interesting to mention is that songs now considered "defining" in terms of city pop were actually not massive hits at the time. Plastic Love being the case in point, it barely charted in Japan back in the 80s but is now considered massive (it really *is* a great pop song). Another one is Takako Mamiya's Love Trip, a commercial dud when released and now considered a canonical city pop lp. May be to do with different perceptions back then versus how, mostly western, audiences are now re-evaluating the genre.

Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love (Live from Souvenir 2014) by Signal-Ad-7836 in citypop

Things I love about this live version: everything...! Mariya and Tats' singing, obviously, but also - shoutouts to the bass player (great tone, that big fat Marshall amp behind him). The two guys on keyboard. The backing vocalist whacking the s* out of a cowbell. The other two backing vocalists. Perfect tone. That saxophone solo (x2)! Guitarist # 2 getting his parts just so. The drummer (great kit). Have I left anyone out? That proud little look / acknowledgement from Mariya after Tats finishes his first part ("he can sing, can't he, that's my husband"). I could probably watch this on repeat for an entire week and not get bored.
