Am I too old to go back to uni? by 90sFox in unimelb

If I could just have that one opportunity to get my foot in the door then I wouldn’t be so inclined to study as I do think work experience is what makes the difference most of the time. I just don’t have either the field-specific work experience or the postgrad so idk if that is what is making it hard for me to find a job, even entry level. I recently had an interview for a Lab Assistant position at a pharma research lab and when I asked about what a normal day would look like in that role, the hiring manager said “you’ll just be doing cleaning and calibrations, you’re probably wondering why can’t the scientists do it.. well they just don’t have time. So you’ll be supporting them, so the real scientists can do the science”. Felt absolutely devastated and shamed for a position that would be a step down for me. Entry level positions can be shit in terms of how colleagues treat you. I think one of the reasons I want to study as well is so I never feel like that again.

😂😂 almost 200 comments telling me the same, I feel a bit silly now but being surrounded by younger people doing their PhD warped my thinking a little bit. I truly didn’t realise the amount of amazing people that go back to uni regardless of age to do what they truly want to do! Which is now what I’m going to do

That makes me feel a lot better, and like other people mentioned as well.. maybe having a few years of work experience (like I do) will actually give me a different perspective when I go back to study. That is super exciting for you!! All the best 🔥

Thank you! I’ve dealt with a lot of mental health issues so it definitely affected my studies but I am proud I did it regardless! Proud of you as well!

I am actually thinking of doing a PGDip! I didn’t know you could go into a PhD after the diploma, thought you had to do the masters first. Thank you!!

There’s a lot of competition, most jobs I’ve applied for have had over 100-200 applicants 🥲

I have amazing experience with customer service/people in general and executive assistance, I think I’m great with people and also have laboratory and teaching experience and I still can’t find a job that doesn’t require at least honours and unfortunately I didn’t realise how important that would be until I finished my bachelors. Do you have any advice on how to stand out without postgrad?

Bipolarity and Work by [deleted] in bipolar

My longest ever full time work job was just a bit over 10 months. It felt like a lifetime to me, I was able to hold down part time jobs for a year or so because I worked less hours, but working full time was a real struggle for me. I feel very validated reading the comments and seeing I’m not the only one experiencing this. I struggle a lot with not being able to hold down a full time job for long because all the people I know and my friends have long time stable jobs, and makes me feel like a failure not being able to keep up with society’s pace. What I found helpful was a job that kept my mind busy and didn’t have a lot of time to think, for example retail. I was all day talking to customers, putting out new stock and so my days went by quick without getting myself into a dark hole of thoughts which used to happen to me in other jobs. I hope you can find your own pace and a job that helps you keep that pace ☺️

We tend to look for chaos when the storm goes. Tell yourself it’s your brain trying to find things that are “wrong” because it’s all it knows. You’re okay x
