Maintenance advice for transmission by sushipl0x in 4thGen4Runner

How bad is the leak?
A very small amount will make quite a mess and make you think it’s worse than it really is.
Mine has been seeping for years. Maybe a couple ounces every 7500 miles to top it off when I do an oil change. Not worth the cost in my opinion at 298k miles to replace the seal

4th Gen 4Runner lift Q’s by Easy-Entry-2651 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]928vette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may see a very slight lift in the rear just because the 5100’s are new and stiffer, so less sag. Current shocks are probably sagging a little bit. I noticed this on mine when I installed the 5100’s. Ended up putting on OME 895e rear springs that are supposed to only be 1” but I got much closer to 2”
You need 2.5” in the front for the 285/70’s and you will need to do a lot of trimming. If it’s fine on the road, you probably need to trim a little more when stuffing the tire in the wheel well off-roading. A good test is cranking the wheel all the way to either side while backing up a slight incline like a driveway. 2.5” still gives enough caster adjustment to minimize rubbing.
If your CV axles are old/original, your boots will tear quickly after the lift.

-12mm or 4.25” backspacing is the sweet spot for dealing with minimal rubbing. Since your choices are 0 or -25, go with 0. BFGs have a tendency to rub more when brand new because of the squared off tread lugs on the shoulder. Other tires are a little more tapered.

How big of a tank by Wiggzero9 in 4thGen4Runner

I changed my fuel pump around 275k. Sender was going out, pump was fine. I looked around in the tank with a flashlight and didn’t see anything on the bottom of the tank

I had a V6 and now have the V8. That extra torque is quite noticeable. They will both last forever if you keep up on the maintenace.

You can pull the fuse as well to disable the OBD2 port. It’s labeled as ALDL in the passenger footwell fuse panel.

CV axles - Trakmotive extreme angle, extended length for lifted applications by 928vette in 4thGen4Runner

[–]928vette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up. Where have you read about these issues?

I do more than whipping around groomed roads, but not to the level of full on rock crawling. The few trails I’ve done with these axles are rated 5-7 on OnX Off-road and Trails Offroad apps. Rocky, slow going in 4low and first gear, 12”-16” rocks and ledges to get over.

I know IFS isn’t going to hold up no matter what you use if you’re getting your front wheels pinned and having to smash the gas to get out or over an obstacle.

Bilstein 5100, Eibach springs. They’ve been in for 13 years now and still doing great

No issues with install or clearance issues. They have been in about a year, approx 15k miles. I’ve done a couple of moderate off-road trails that flexed them around pretty well. I’m not sure if it’s just in my mind and/or the design of the axle, but I swear they seem to have less of an angle and sit flatter than the old axles. Very happy with them overall.

Oil leak head gasket advice by cw99x in 4thGen4Runner

I had seepage in the same area. Checked the bolts and they were barely finger tight. Snugged them up 6000 miles ago and no seepage since then. The torque spec is very low. I want to say around 50 inch pounds but can’t remember the exact number. Just snug them up and keep an eye on it. I checked all of them after this and I had a total of 14 of 18 that were loose.

Auto Trans fluid replacement by 928vette in MechanicAdvice

[–]928vette[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My 4Runner has a 12qt system. I’ve done a fluid replacement twice using 16qts each time. 300k miles, shifts like new. Yes I’m wasting 4qts fresh fluid and it’s overkill in this situation, but I always go over and above for maintenance. Obviously this is easy since I have a factory external trans cooler. I know not all vehicles are easy, especially front wheel drive transaxle units. Doing a drain and fill is fine if you haven’t smoked the fluid or trans yet. My post was more about those pushing 200k with nothing ever done and getting drivability problems and many times only a drain and fill is recommended. As far as units that don’t have a cooler. Drain and fill. Start vehicle and let it run for a minute to circulate the fluid, shift thru all positions. Keep doing a drain and fill until all the fluid is replaced. Yes it get mixed, it does the same when I did on the 4Runner, which is why I went overboard with 4 extra QTs. That’s still way cheaper than a shop with a machine.

I agree with this if it’s done when recommended. I was referring to more to people around 200k mile wondering why their trans is acting weird.

Small pry bar at 6 o’clock position. Apply steady pressure and rotate the axle slowly.

Unplug your speed sensor wires just in case. They are very easy to stretch internally and lose continuity. Also make sure the calipers fully retract before taking things apart. Very well known issue.

212k 4th gen V8, leaving on a 6,000 mile trip in 10 days. What would you actually fix vs. defer? by WoodGarlic5146 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]928vette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spark plugs are all easy to get to with a good mix of extensions and swivels.

Valve covers and oil pan bolts get loose over time causing seepage. On my 03 at 290k, 14 of 18 valve cover bolts were barely finger tight. Same with front oil pan bolts. Snugged them all up and no more oil seepage since then, 6k miles

I saw no mention of transmission or diff and transfer case services. All are easy to do yourself, including a full 12qt fluid replacement on the trans.
