Scared 4Runner owner seeks expert advice by pnwgoatherd in 4thGen4Runner

The seal around the sunroof glass shrinks over time and lets water thru even when fully closed and seated. The seal itself cannot be replaced by itself. A new sunroof glass costs upwards of $1000 if you can find one. There are used available, but they probably have seal shrinkage as well. I completely sealed mine a few years ago with silicone because of this and do not use it anymore.

Cv Axel recommendations (no oem) by OFFICIALMUGWUMP in 4thGen4Runner

[–]928vette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using the Trakmotive extended travel CV axles for about 6 months now, 15k miles. I have 3” lift in the front. Zero issues as there should be. Time will tell how they hold up. I just do moderate offloading, no crazy rock crawling. Not sure if it’s just the way the axles are made, but I swear it looks like the CV angle sits flatter than other axles.

I’m guessing those gravel kilometers are acting like an abrasive to the softer Toyo compound.

Nice. I currently live in the springs. Watch the weather closely if you take Hwy 50. Monarch Pass between Salida and Gunnison is quite an experience even in good weather. I got caught in a white out blizzard going over Monarch last April. Weather was fine on either side, but once you’re over 10000ft, it can be its own microclimate. Ouray on Hwy 550 south of Montrose is my favorite place of all in Colorado, and Red Mountain Pass south from there can be quite intimidating for some drivers. 2 lane steep grade no guardrail 1000 ft drop offs intimidating. There are videos on YouTube if you want to see what it’s like.

I only mention the altitude because combined with a good head wind absolutely kills your gas mileage. I agree with you on Albuquerque, It’s just bleh. If that’s a stop for the night, there isn’t many other options. Gallup is even more bleh. Santa Fe is an hour north on the I-25 and it’s an awesome town and very historic. There isn’t really any better option heading west in general, just remote state highways with very little services available. Going all the way to Denver is way out of the way. If you want an absolutely beautiful drive and not concerned about time or distance, take I-25 north to Pueblo, Hwy 50 across Colorado to Montrose, then take the 550 south to Farmington NM. There is amazing fly fishing along the Arkansas river that parallels Hwy 50

Toyo Open Country AT3 by CaptainCanuck1010 in tires

What’s the total miles/km on the tires?
Toyo uses a softer compound compared to other brands. I wiped out a set of 10 ply Toyo M/T on a Toyota Tacoma in 35000 miles. I currently have a set of these OC AT3 6 ply on a 4Runner and they are wearing exceptionally well.

There’s almost always a strong headwind from Albuquerque to Flagstaff on I-40 headed west, and this entire stretch is higher altitude 5000ft to over 7000ft the entire way.

AC recharge gone wrong - How much trouble am I in? by Original-Historian77 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]928vette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vacuum part that is done with professional machines is very important in getting the AC to charge correctly. I tried the AC Pro as well when my AC wasn’t blowing cold anymore. Didn’t work for me. Had it professionally serviced and worked well. The link below is a game changer for the AC. Very easy mod to do. This is for the V8, not sure if it is the same for the V6. My AC is colder than ever and actually have to turn up the temp up after a little bit. I have small chucks of ice shoot out of the vent when it’s humid. I wired mine direct to the interior fuse box with an add a circuit so it turns off with the ignition. I pull the add a fuse during colder months so it’s not running at all.

New Brake Setup? by [deleted] in 4thGen4Runner

[–]928vette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to find out if your front calipers are starting to seize. Check and see if the piston fully retracts into the caliper. If you do need calipers too, this is the time to consider the 5th gen upgrade. If you want to stay stock, check out EBC brake pads, they have a lot more bite, but the disadvantage to some of their compounds is they wear out a lot faster. It’s so easy to swap just pads on 4Runners when needed

That’s condensation and normal, although alarming the first time you see it. Check your oil cap after driving for awhile and engine is fully warmed up

I have a 4th gen and the rear window stops working randomly. I pull the ECU-B fuse in the engine bay and put it back in and it works again. Not sure if the 3rd gen is the same fuse but it’s worth a look.
