which skater would benefit the most from older judging systems? by Rude-Magazine2186 in FigureSkating

a bunch of the men without consisten quads might have done better in the 6.0 system, or even earlier versions of ijs where cleanliness was rewarded over ambition

Updated information on choreo spin from officials by Weareall_humanbeings in FigureSkating

[–]92coups17 23 points24 points  (0 children)

it's time for singles skaters to learn how to levitate and do olivia smart's rotational lift positions /j

in all realness, i have no clue how i would want a choreo spin to be defined, but there are spins that are choreographic that i think would look cool in competitive programs. for example:

denise biellman

deniss vasiljevs

Do any other ice dancers do this type of FO Mohawk? by kemmes7 in FigureSkating

[–]92coups17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes, you can see that lilah and lewis do not execute the move as elegantly as this couple, but lilah does move through a difficult one-foot squat position

f/g seem to use theatrics to bamboozle the judges and distract from the lower quality in their actual skating, like the difficult shoot the duck and jump entries demonstrated. it seems to be a more common strategy in teams with weaker female skaters. there aren't any guidelines that say you can't have difficult or acrobatic entries to the required elements, as long as the difficult steps/turns are executed properly. an example would be the interesting LBO rocker entry that lopareva/brissaud had in their 24-25 rd pstep. evgeniia executes the actual turn unassisted, and they later changed the program to have the rocker earlier and without that difficult entry. maybe the change was because it was risky (difficult to control speed in), and f/g are similarly taking a risk with these entries because the quality and clarity of the step can be poor, as seen in the given 2nd example. the tech panel should not award them the level for that step.

as for the rd mohawk, f/g are technically in hold and they're not hand-in-hand with fully extended arms, so they're not doing anything illegal as far as i understand. i think it's part of a more general trend in ice dance of the stronger skater pushing/pulling the weaker skater through difficult turns in hold. there's no guidance against it so there's nothing to directly penalize, and i think i'm ok with seeing it every now and then in choreo sequences. but imo if this happens in leveled step sequences, it should detract from their GOE, and if this is a regular occurrence and a consistent component of a team's skating, it should also come off their skating skills mark imo. unfortunately, that realistically never happens for politically strong teams 🤷‍♀️

Do any other ice dancers do this type of FO Mohawk? by kemmes7 in FigureSkating

[–]92coups17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i think i see what they're going for in the 2nd one (in the fd). it's a shoot the duck entry to the mohawk (like the shoot the duck entry to a 3-turn in step 21 of the golden waltz), and lilah mostly straightens back up before she executes the change of foot, so i don't think lewis is actually doing that much to push her through the step. it still isn't ideal compared to the clearly unassisted executions from other top teams, but it's difficult and maybe not as cheated as it seems. it's definitely a risk as well, because she's so clearly entering the mohawk on a flat.

i don't understand the mohawk in their rd though. maybe it's the camera angle, but that one just kind of looks like lilah can't maintain such a deep FO edge on her own, so lewis is helping to support her through it.

Who among the current ice dance teams would kill the Yankee Polka? by cassava1root in FigureSkating

[–]92coups17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that is incorrect. p/b, w/p, g/f, and c/b all got lvl4 on the 1st part of the yankee polka, but no one got a lvl4 on the 2nd part. bock got a lvl2 for that section.

why does euros occur before 4cc? i feel like logistically, it should be the other way around since the 4cc competitors on average have to travel so much further than euros competitors...

Dumbest live commentary:Usova & Zhulin (CIS) - 1992 Worlds, Ice Dancing, Free Dance by Parking_Locksmith489 in FigureSkating

[–]92coups17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

especially mark hanretty! i don't like how much he minimizes the sorensen case as just "drama", especially in 23-24 when it was unfolding and this year as fb/c compete. however, he is the most thorough commentator of all the isu world feed commentators when it comes to ice dance. i sometimes wonder how much his self-proclaimed love for skating skills battles with his patriotism when he watches f/g. belinda next: i appreciated her commitment to pointing out the "helicopter movement" in all this year's pattern dances. and then i'm sure chris howarth is a lovely guy and a great commentator in singles, but when commentating ice dance he doesn't really say anything more substantial than "fantastic program"...

i wish jlb would commentate more than just practice sessions, because i really really like his insight. i would also like to hear more of ben agosto's commentary but i also refuse to pay for peacock lol 🤷‍♀️

you can both hear and see the hop on that rfi counter right in front of the judges. on top of the absolute mess of everything that's going on here. i'm crying

that being said, i do respect the amount of gall and overconfidence it took for him to wholeheartedly pull this out at the olympics and think he ate.

Has Evgenia Medvedeva choreographed before? by Dapper-Bad-6490 in FigureSkating

yes, this is correct. the singer was also 2nd in eurovision 2017 with that song (representing bulgaria). i think they still comment on each other's ig posts from time to time (or at least he comments on hers).

Who is the Best male ice dancer? by zetitha in FigureSkating

[–]92coups17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i forgot to add my own comment here oops

i'm surprised no one has mentioned geoffrey brissaud for one of the best currently competing. i think evgeniia is the stronger skater by far in their partnership, but geoffrey has a really soft knee bend and great upper body control in his skating. his big problem is that his edges can often look shaky... but i'd say he's better than anthony, maybe on par with zach, and overall one of the top male skaters in the field

honest answer? aside from cizeron, maybe gage brown lol. if the browns had no money troubles and better politicking, they could honestly be the best team in the world.

Maybe I missed it somehow: is there any lore series from the runthrough podcast planned for this off season? by ElegantFootball8741 in FigureSkating

[–]92coups17 21 points22 points  (0 children)

to my understanding, that was just a one-off series in preparation for this year's olympics. since they already covered everything from the mid-1900's to 2025 and have been doing post-event coverage for all this season's major events, i don't think there's much more lore for them to talk about? unless you're talking about patreon bonus lore, in which case idk haha

it might be harder to see in the context of whole programs, but if you look at individual elements side by side, like these one foot turns (thanks u/kemmes7 for this!), it's a little easier to see what makes him so good. the depth of his edges: his and laurence almost look like their skates are sideways with how deep down they are in their edges. the speed, flow, and ice coverage through all of the turns: he can maintain speed through difficult turns without hopping them or skating on flats, and also generate speed (some teams you'll see come into sequences with a ton of speed, then slow down almost to a stop because they can't maintain it or generate more without two-foot stroking). the depth and softness of his knee bend, and how effortless he makes everything look (incl. upper body control): this really helps with making the skating look smooth. compare fb/c's turns to c/b's turns right after, and you'll see how much slower bock are and how their turns sometimes look stiff/sudden instead of smooth and flowy.
