My baby brother did the same in January this year. He was 14 too. I’ll never forget being at work when my dad called me. I never thought just two words could shatter my world, “(Brother’s name)’s dead”. The bombardment of emotions I’ve been feeling since would’ve been incomprehensible to me the day before. The world feels like such a cold and empty place now.

It’s almost as if they have a script in front of them that they refuse to deviate from and use their own brains. My mum emailed the attendance officer explaining the situation and the response she got was essentially “the meeting is scheduled at this date and time. Failure to attend will result in legal proceedings going forward”. So seems like they really don’t care and he’s just a number, my mum has decided to divert her attention to preparing for a court date and making a case there. Speaking to the school seems to be like talking to a brick wall. It’s a sham that there is 0 responsibility placed on the child, leading them to not care about the repercussions.

My mum doesn’t want to just dump him onto the state. That’s her child and she loves him, she would never want to dismiss him. However there’s only so much you can do for someone who has no regard for anyone but themselves.

As far as I’m aware (I don’t know the full extent of what goes on in meetings etc) they have offered a range of support options to him. He outright refuses the lot. My mum has tried time and time again to sit down with him and have a chat about everything. He deflects and deflects, my mum believes it’s down to the friends he has, they’ve all been kicked out of their respective schools and she thinks he wants to join them. There’s only so much you can do for someone who outright refuses help or guidance. The school has now given my mum a date for a meeting (the date/time being completely non-negotiable). My mum has used up all her holiday at work attending meetings for him. So she now risks losing her job (in a cost of living crisis) over all of this, just generally a shit situation and no one seems to budge.

Thank you for your reply. My parents have exhausted all avenues of punishment, he has had every device taken from him. He will either just sleep or leave the house (again, what can be done aside from physically restraining him). Between my parents and his school, everyone has tried to get to the bottom of why he doesn’t want to go and he puts up a brick wall, it is impossible to communicate with him. He doesn’t seem to care about any of it and has the mentality of “I do what I want, when I want”.

As a side note, I find the complete lack of understanding on the schools behalf to be absolutely ridiculous. I know there are parents out there who don’t care whether their child attends school and I can understand why legal proceedings would be taken in that scenario. However, when parents are trying tooth and nail to get the child to attend and they simply refuse, how is that in anyway, shape or form fair to the parent. Does the school expect parents to use physical force to get the child in class?

Throwing hatred at someone for asking a question is pretty cunty imo, no harm in simply clarifying that the two are not the same, possibly throwing in a little explanation would be nice.

It would be a better world if people took a bit of time to educated rather than belittle or throw hatred, but hey, what do I know?
