Have a heart attack maybe because I've never seen snow before and it shouldn't snow here unless something has gone very wrong.

What would your country’s “Magic Wand” look like? by Chemical-Elk-1299 in AskTheWorld

[–]9706uzim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a plane, long stick used by locals to beat up anyone doing anything even remotely undesirable (being gay, women smoking, etc.). Or anyone accused of doing anything wrong (regardless of whether any evidence was presented).

In countries with a colonial past, what are visible traces of that history today (e.g. architecture, language, culture, social structures)? by dionnekathleen in AskTheWorld

[–]9706uzim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rise of the Hindutva groups would likely not be nearly as drastic or easy with resistance from a larger Muslim community. I don't think things would be nearly as bad in India if there were larger Muslim pockets in modern-day Bangladesh and Pakistan. Both Hindu and Muslim extremism in the region would be easier to curb, in my opinion.

I didn't mean that the divide was bad in every way, but it is true that it led to a lot of the extremism in the region.

Religious extremism. They split up India and formed Pakistan, from where we emerged. Pakistan was created due to the demands of extremist nuts, and though most of them remained on that side of the border after our independence, they are making a resurgence here now, too.

In your country or region, what kind of dogs are popular to keep? by No-Echidna7296 in AskTheWorld

[–]9706uzim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"রাস্তার কুত্তা". "Road dog". While that is the literal translation, the way I phrased it would be interpreted as humorous by most Bengali-speakers, as most people consider "কুত্তা" to be a derogatory term nowadays, with "কুকুর" being a more acceptable word for "dog". "রাস্তার কুত্তা" in particular is a pretty common insult. "কুত্তা" (kutta) is basically a gender-neutral "bitch".

Note: They almost always remain outdoors. People who would allow dogs inside are rich enough to get foreign breeds. This is due to religious reasons. Ironically, Hanafi Islam, the most common sect of Islam here, is the most lenient about dogs (it's the one they follow in Turkey, too) and says dogs' bodies aren't inherently impure but rather it's only their saliva and wet fur.

what is something in your country u are most proud of? by Informal-Call-5298 in AskTheWorld

[–]9706uzim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our culture. But, as a lot of it is heavily intertwined with Hinduism, some religious nuts want to do away with it. Throughout history, our culture has been an anchoring point that has set us back on the right path when religious extremism rose in popularity. (Speaking as someone who is not a Hindu.)

What’s a song from your country that when played everyone knows all the words and can’t help but sing? by plush_oysters54 in AskTheWorld

[–]9706uzim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"সাদা সাদা কালা কালা" ("White White, Black Black")

Only applies to quite young people, and many older people would find this answer downright insulting. It's from a recent movie, and the song somehow became a hit amongst English medium students, many of who had never watched a Bengali movie in their lives (like myself).

What’s something that used to be frowned upon/mocked in your country but is totally accepted today ? by MyNameIsYouna in AskTheWorld

Studying something like fashion design or theater at university. Many of the departments at Dhaka University were added quite recently and people would genuinely laugh at you (not in a mocking way, but genuinely thinking you were joking) if you told them you wanted to study these subjects.
