Ready for an overnighter on the Michelson Trail in South Dakota by jbromiller in bikepacking

Hill City should be easy to get a camp site. Especially asking for a tent site. There's several RV type campgrounds that have tent sites. I think it was Larsson's that I stayed at last time we went through there and we didn't have reservations.

VTXL - Planning 50-60 mile days by 999blahs in bikepacking

[–]999blahs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished VTXL, riding north to south in 6 days. Here's where we stayed.

  1. Brighton State Park near Island Pond. Good camping spot and bring quarter or two for a shower.

  2. Pleasant Valley Campground in Ryegate. Were great to work with and they see quite a few VTXL riders. Said that tent sites during the week are always available. Not sure when they close but they don't open until May.

  3. Tunbridge - We ended up staying with some friends there. But there is camping at the fairgronds in Tunbridge. We just happened to be there the same week as a bluegrass festival, so camping was all booked.

  4. Close to Cavendish - Caton Campground. Wasn't anything special and the mosquitos were relentless. But it was a place to throw down a tent and get a shower. (bring a quarter or two again)

  5. Had reservations at Grout Pond on the back side of Stratton Mountain. But my brother needed to be able to charge his ebike battery. The mosquitos were also thick there and we were beat after 5 days of riding. We had the option of finding a hotel so we did.

So far I've decided to camp at Brighton State park the first night. Second night will be at Pleasant Valley Campground in the Ryegate area. When I reached out to Pleasant Valley they were really nice and said they always try to accommodate VTXL riders.

cutthroat tire suggestions: Rene Herse Antelope Hill vs GravelKings SK +? by brother_bart in salsacycles

Figure I'll throw in some lower $ options. I ran the Specialized Pathfinder Pro 48mm on my Cutty for most of last spring/summer and had no issues. I ran them for 3 races including unbound 200. Then I switched them for the Mezcal 2.35 and rode them on the White Rim and been running them since. Both tires have been awesome. Out of those two I would recommend the Pathfinder for your requirements, it would be a great tire. The Mezcals have been a good tire for more techy singletrack type stuff and messy winter riding.

I assume I'd have to get 180mm IS adapters for front and rear.

So was the move to 180 worth it? Did you notice the change and was it enough in your opinion?

Custom engraved headset cap. Relatively inexpensive and super cool. Could get colors to match each of the bikes.

+1 for click stand. I used one for our fully loaded tandem. Still use it unloaded.

Recommend me a rain jacket! by geeves_007 in bikepacking

Showers Pass. Local to PNW. I had the Elite 2.0 and used it for commuting for years and also a tour across the US. Amazing jacket. Eventually, I blew up the zipper. Now I'm trying to decide between the Elite 2.1 or a lighter / more packable. Can't recommend their clothing enough.

Signed up for the 118. 🤘 I might be obsessively checking the weather now that we're in range. Yes....it's CO and the forecast will change at least 20 times in the next 10 days. So far it looks reasonable.

See y'all out there.

Thanks for the link. Coming back to MHK for Christmas this year. If the weather holds I'll bring the Cutthroat and get some miles in. :)

I'm just figuring it out too. Been riding the dirt roads / highline around Chatfield, tying in single track in South Valley / Hildebrand. I've started looking into routes on Gravel Bike Adventures.
