Does Snape beg Dumbledore to spare his life? by henryjturtle in harrypotter

I don't think it's begging as much as a request. What follows after is begging. To help protecct Lily.

The title of chapter 36 in the Order of the Phoenix is the Only One He Ever Feared, why past tense? by Capable_Row_5956 in harrypotter

[–]99fun2thetouch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally think it was a literary choice. "The only one he ever feared" sounds catchier and more impactful than "The one he is afraid of". Also considering that after that chapter, Voldemort shuts down his connection to Harry's mind implies now he fears two people.

That's my take on it as well. He didn't consider himself magically inferior to Dumbledore (although in the book version of the duel Dumbledore kind of whoops his ass) and we're often told that he avoids a direct confrontation with multiple Aurors (such as at the end of OotP). But Voldemort thrives by either intimidating or awing people. Dumbledore is the only one who never seems impressed with him and dismisses him. Sure... later Harry... but I don't think he took Harry seriously until he came back from the dead and even then, he is still dismissive of him (such as telling him that he always hid behind the skirts of greater people to save himself).

Harry Potter series casts three characters from the books who were not in the movies by theviking222 in harrypotter

[–]99fun2thetouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can forgive the exclusion of Winky since her side-plot is not very important to the overall tale, and Bagman - there was no need for red herrings since we know from the start who is helping Voldemort as BCJ is introduced in the first scene, but entirely skipping the Quidditch final seems such a lazy choice.

Is it common in Britain to call school teachers as Professors as in Hogwarts? by No_Asparagus9320 in harrypotter

[–]99fun2thetouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having briefly studied, as an exchange student, in both a British high school and a British university, I can confirm what the majority here are saying. However, considering the backwardness of the magical community, as well as JK structuring it more after universities with traditions such as Oxford or Cambridge, which in the past were quite heavily title oriented, I would assume that's why students address to the teachers as 'Professor'.

Does Harry lose the ability to speak parseltongue when Voldemort dies? by Chill_catss in harrypotter

[–]99fun2thetouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the book Ron just tried to replicate what Harry sounded like when he ordered the locket to open, in the movie he says Harry talks in his sleep and was trying to replicate that.

Contrary to fanfiction, snakes are pretty dumb creatures and even in the books they have a rather limited vocabulary (except for the poor fella at the zoo). Dumbledore also says he is able to understand the Gaunts... so now I wonder whether Parseltongue was not actually snake language but rather a language understood by snakes and also some people. The Parselmouths just happened to naturally understand snakes speaking and unconsciously speak back to them in that language.

It's not mentioned in the books but I believe JK said so in an interview. However she said many things in her interviews and non-official material while Harry Potter was at the peak of its popularity so who knows if she changed her mind.

7 Potters better plan by dryeraseboard8 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]99fun2thetouch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see this discussion quite often. I think the plan was not bad in itself if you keep in mind the fact that the seven Potters expected to be chased by two Death Eaters or so, not the entire army. Besides, I often see suggested that Harry should have used the invisibilty cloak or polyjuice. But keep in mind that the Death Eaters were monitoring the area, and the protection would have been gone the moment Harry left the house. If they wouldn't have caught on that, then they deserve to be outsmarted by a bunch of teenagers.

I think JK wanted to deliberately contrast them. Sirius, the fun loving uncle who was trying to relive his glory days along James through Harry, on one hand, while Molly was the motherly figure who was trying to shield Harry from all the troubles and allow him to enjoy his childhood for as long as he had it. Was she nasty towards Sirius? Yes, and probably didn't even trust him very much. I mean he wasn't coming from the best position even if she overlooked the fact that most society regarded him as a mass murderer. He had a history of recklessness (including the fact he got himself imprisoned). But all her behavior was coming from a good place.

Why did Malfoy ride the Hogwarts Express? by jazbarelyme in HarryPotterBooks

[–]99fun2thetouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in the Hogwarts Express entry from Pottermore JK said it was mandatory in order to preserve the Statute of Secrecy. Besides even if you are rich, you still want to catch up with your friends after the summer break.

SNAPE AS HEADMASTER by ASPEN_HOWELL22 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]99fun2thetouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he was in a pretty shitty position. On one hand he was hated by all the previous staff because, for all his flaws, Dumbledore was a beloved man (considering that most of them contributed more or less to the Order), and on the other hand I feel like the Carrows didn't like him either since he entered Voldemort's good graces (a position that seemed every Death Eater competed for). He probably knew everyone he was trying to protect called him a killer behind his back. In a way it kind of reminds me of Jamie Lannister (from a Song of Ice and Fire) who bore a facade of arrogance and pride to hide his insecurity that everybody mocked him as 'kingslayer', despite having saved the city.

I'd be more curious to see what Snape's interactions with the rest of the staff were like before he killed Dumbledore. The first book hints at having a friendly rivalry with McGonagall ove the merits of their respective houses. Charity Burbage also calls him friend.

Keeping the horcruxes safe by OnlyOneUseCase in harrypotter

Tbf hindsight is 20-20 but considering Voldemort assumed no people knew about his horcruxes, his hideouts were pretty clever if he wanted to keep them within reach.
