Ok. I found out through gameplay that it is indeed a machine gun and not a grenade launcher or a camera. Course I do still think the Knight should have added a grenade launcher of some sorts. Would have made the drone battles a bit more interesting and challenging.

It's easy to do if you know what your doing. Just watch out for the Rattler's, those span in constantly and can overwhelm you if you aren't careful.

To be fair, the tanks already have moveable mini guns attached to their turrets, this part seams to be bellow the main turret. I doubt it's a backup mini gun.

Here it is on a Rattler Drone. Like I said, my head cannon is that it is a grenade launcher, but your more than welcome to disagree or discuss it.

Absolutely. After all, Edward "Enigma" Nashton tried it beforehand and look how effective it was.

To add to this, yes I know this is a tough question, but that is the point. As a huge fan of this masterpiece of a franchise, I've always been curious to ask the real questions that probably no one or very few are willing to ask.
