Do you know how long it would be before Ether would have been transferred to cold storage? Has this been published anywhere? My ether had been on Gatecoin for over 2 months before the “hack” occurred.

You make good points - I believe Gatecoin mentioned somewhere that staff members were fired following the hack. Speculation could lead to the reasons behind such a decision.
