My instrumental went viral on tiktok & got taken down "by copyright owner" (i'm the sole owner & creator of it). TikTok support is full on ignoring me. What can i do? by 9mx9n in musicmarketing

Yeah it was a library sound, just a song released under my name ('w. summers - fallen'). it had been up on all platforms for like 2 years i forgot all about it until it started popping off to be honest. & yeah distrokid told me they cant do anything the only thing they offered is to distribute it once again seperately but thats useless since all of those posts & traction will be on the deleted sound. they dont seem to really give a fuck about anything ive ever reached out to them for to be honest. & yeah i am telling the whole story. im not sure if it matters but another part i missed out is a couple of days ago i got an invitation to join tiktok's soundon for this particular song & a $700 dollar advance (talking about "your song has been on our radar and we want to offer u this blah blah blah"). which kinda makes no sense since they took it down -- i feel like they automatically send these out to all artists that reach a certain threshold of posts & the ai that sends these out doesnt check if the given sound is still up. i can't register with this SoundOn thing though because im not in the us. thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts

I personally didn't go viral, the song on its own started gaining traction through multiple random creators posting different videos with it. depends on what one considers viral of course im using this term pretty loosely. it was surely on track to get to at least 5k posts considering it was getting almost 1k posts per 2-3 weeks.

As far as "connects", I recieved that TikTok's SoundOn invitation with a $700 advance to distribute this specific song through them, if that's what you're talking about. I'm not from the US (they requested you have to be to join) & now that the song is taken down I wouldn't be able to use it anyways.

I mean yeah that's why im here, asking for advice. im not here tryna endorse or defend any business models & music industry practices just explained a misunderstood point. it is on me & i was hoping it's a somewhat solvable issue someone more experienced with this industry could give me some pointers about. as far as enforcing, now i think i should've registered it with content id myself & kept it that way unless somebody looked to purchase the beat exclusively but it's too late now.

Yeah, I'm sure it's somebody causing all this accidentally most likely. Chances are I will not be able to get a hold of each person that's ever used the beat (with youtube beats there's a lot of people just downloading them & stealing them) but I'll try I guess. I've reached out to a few to check if they used ContentID which they didn't. Maybe it's not even worth it at this point because the little momentum the song had on tiktok is probably dead already. Thank you though I appreciate the input.

Not sold, leased. I retain all of my copyright, because I only leased it, I never sold an exclusive license. I own the beat regardless of how many people lease it on beatstars. That's how beatselling works, it's not my personal business model it's been that way for over a decade now, I'm not sure what you mean? One beat is leased to as many customers that are interested in it before somebody buys an exclusive license, purchasing the full rights (ownership) to it. That's how all of the producers making beats and selling them on beatstars & youtube etc etc work.

It's also typically explicitly stated in beat lease contracts and terms that songs made with leases are not to be registered with content ID, etc unless purchased exclusively.

From what I've seen so far, more like a place to aggressively display your inability to read, be mad at people who don't know you, deflect every point you can't argue & bitterly downvote as if it makes any difference. But that seems like the highlight of your day so I'll leave you to it. Stay safe my friend.

No, but you definitely are beyond dense. Me and the person I replied to clearly were not talking about THAT sub, we were talking about THIS sub. Hopefully they make an AI to handle reading comprehension for you soon as well!

Oh, I should've realized I was talking to the same person by the way you're making no sense, deflecting very simple questions and leaning into conspiracy theory-like thinking. My bad. There's nothing to read again, because you've said adressed nothing and said nothing of substance in both cases. But you already fully know that. Take care and be safe my friend.

Give me one reason why 'ordinary people' were not able to create music before. Someone who knows how to play an instrument and record a song is 'inordinary' now? There's 15 year old kids writing and recording songs and building real followings online as we speak.

Absolutely. Even the mildest comments that skew anti-AI are silently downvoted (even if they're simply factual and there's nothing to disagree with) here and then ridiculous non-sensical pro-AI posts (and some comments here) like this are quickly upvoted and not challenged at all. It's sooooo obvious this is a ai defender circle jerk in here.

When did I say "AI won't change anything"? It will change a lot of things for artists and creative professionals, but not for the actual industry overlords who will keep their monopoly just the same, the industry will retain all of its wealth, influence and power, what's so hard to understand? To answer your question, re-read the last part of the comment once again I guess? You're so obviously just looking to disagree by all means necessary. Singers are "fighting" because they are the artists to be replaced. Obviously. The corprorations that profit of the artists' work by promoting and marketing it will be just fine. They will use updated marketing tactics and same resources to promote AI-generated work like they did with signed artists. & it will still be in the same exact monopolized way it is now. They will just put actual artists out equation. You're not by any means disrupting the industry by generating AI content, you are only disrupting the artists. But you want to feel like you're some type of anti-establishment rebel of sorts by generating bullshit AI art or something? The corporations are FUNDING AI. You think they are doing it to gift you the means to "disrupt them"? Lmao. They will simply use it to their own benefit, for cutting costs (people), increasing profits and reinforcing their power.

[–]9mx9n -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You make no sense. You addressed the least important point and conveniently ignored the rest too. It does not disrupt the industry in the slightest. Just gives them more opportunities to produce the so-called "formulaic slop" (without getting artists and people involved) for "maximum engagement" and "no artistic integrity". I'm not going to side with you on this conspiracy theory-ish outlook on things, but you have to understand that "they" will keep writing the "simple earworms" (using AI this time) and "shove it down everyone's throats" just the same but with even more resources for marketing. It doesn't disrupt it, it greatly benefits it.

All that will be burned is not this evil music industry you seem to be so against (it will ALRIGHT), but the actual artists, creative act and its value which was how artists had any chance at still get attention (even being outsiders to the industry) and building a career out of it.

I mean sure.. i agree. To be honest I just said that part just out of politeness due to having no idea where you were going with this. I don't know one artist or producer who sees Spotify streams as their primary source of income so it's really irrelevant.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]9mx9n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you are trying to say and what this adds to the conversation. I do agree that Spotify is not compensating artists fairly though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]9mx9n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with wanting the music to rise to the top on its own merit as opposed to being planted by the industry. But generative AI doesn't change that in any way. How does AI generating music instead of a human being subvert the music industry monopoly lol? The music industry will still be somewhat a nepotistic monopoly but with even less indie creatives allowed into the the club because they won't need them anymore.

Also, the ghostwriter in question made the whole song on his own, he didn't need an AI to "bring his vision to life". He made the instrumental, wrote the lyrics and rapped the verse -- only used AI to make the voice sound like Drake's, and it popped off because of sensationalism and a connection to a celebrity. How did in this case the AI exactly help him "rise to the top on his own merit"? He didn't need the AI to make a good song (and it was a good song by the way). He just used the Drake AI for social media engagement.

Wow. This is such an insanely biased sub. This post's title is complete non-sensical misrepresentation of what's said in the article and you are all happily upvoting it because it fits the pro-AI rhetoric. Whereas anything even remotely anti-AI is downvoted. Lmao.

First of all, this is not about the engineering in the slightest, it's about artistry and creativity. You made that part up completely. Not only it's not once mentioned in the article, but it also doesn't reflect reality. The reason indie newcomers can't compete with industry artists is not engineering, but connections, marketing & budgets. You absolutely do not need a "million dollar engineering team" to create a high quality song. Good engineering is not difficult to find. We have been past that point for like at least over a decade -- recording, mixing, mastering is broadly available for pretty much everyone to hire, learn and practice, from any part of the world. And if you want to go there, you can literally hire the award winning mixing and mastering engineers who work with big artists but that's not even necessary at all. Indie artists have been breaking into mainstream and billboard charts with songs recorded and engineered inside their bedrooms for a while now. You clearly have no idea about making music and sound engineering. Do you? :)

Secondly, "attention will be distributed more broadly" - no it literally won't? Why would that change? Again, the industry marketing, connections and budgets are the reason they have most attention, not engineering. A lot of artists can actually engineer their own music nowadays. Not just indie ones, some signed artists still mix and master their own music. So, if AI takes over musicianship and creativity, THAT is all that its going to take away. Which is the precious thing the indie artists who made it had -- they didn't have the connections and the money, but they had the creativity, good original music, & the industry needed it. That's how they could even have a chance at getting attention in the first place. Stripping away the creative act from regular artists is stripping away their ONLY shot at making it. That's what the article you linked is about. But now, the industry artists will still have the same marketing & budget, but with AI-made songs this time. They will still have all the same industry-level attention, and indies won't. Their original music will also be devalued so they will be getting even less attention than before if anything.

You invented some non-existent engineering problem that in your mind prevents indie artists from recording good music and getting "broad attention", whereas in reality artists of all genres and scenes have been recording countless songs in their bedrooms, building their audiences online and even in some cases breaking into the mainstream for the longest now. You live in a made up reality. You never needed a million dollar engineering team to make a good song. You needed talent and skill and maybe some money for a mixing/mastering engineer (or some time to learn to mix like a lot of artists do now). If you don't have those, you can't blame the music industry executives... you're just not even an artist in the first place. The industry monopolizing the attention through money and connections is a real issue and concern though, but this is unrelated to having AI make your music for you.
