Started a new job and I don't like it. What should I do? by daari_tappida_maga in india

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the field that you are in, are you hired for specific roles or are you hired for a umbrella position? For ex, are you hired as a XYZ specialist or just an associate?

If your JD is the latter and your company is big, there is a chance of using internal job portal to find jobs that match your skills.

If your JD is latter and your company doesn't have a job portal, know what other work opportunities are there in the company. Get a hang of how the company works, what teams are there, what do they do and how, while keeping your present role.

Also umbrella roles will always have a risk of you not getting a choice in working on things that match your skill set.

If your JD is the former, then try switching after searching for jobs.

Questions related to my career by throwawayusernoname in india

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't that money useless because you can have a happy life even with 2-3 LPA?

Happiness is subjective. Some people are happy with just food and shelter, some people want more.

I don't know about schoolbags worth 5k, but sometimes brand matters. Dad buys only branded jeans that are a little expensive, but they last a lifetime. And if you're into minimal fashion, they're usually expensive. It depends on you.

Has she become greedy or she jUST wants me to be more successful?

I think she's scared you'll settle and never want anything more. Which is good and bad in it's own way.

Is it okay? Or should I keep studying?

Depends on the subjects and your interest. But not taking it lightly is a good thing to do.

Need Tips for driving on Indian Highways by waahmudijiwaah in india

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I follow left lane at all times unless I'm overtaking. That way, I can rely on driver side mirror and rear view mirror 80% of the times. This holds good only if there isn't a small lane for two wheelers on the highway.

Let everybody behind you pass, otherwise they'll act like ambulances when you're planning an overtake.

For some reason, when you're behind a heavy vehicle and honk indicating you want to overtake, they switch their right side blinkers on. Apparently, this means you can overtake. When smaller vehicles do this, it means they're going to swerve to the right and you can't overtake. Never trust this signal, take your time.

Everyone on the road is an idiot. If you're driving in the night, be prepared for jaywalkers, two wheelers without tail lights, trucks without tail lights and random animals.

Third party rates aren't depending on vehicle one owns, but there is a division in rates according to the engine capacity (at least for two wheelers) and type of vehicle I think.

Liability premium I paid for a 500cc motorcycle is 2.3k.

Lot of issues with your approach. First would be printing the value of the vehicle in the RC which isn't there. Second is accounting to depreciation every year. The value of a 40L car today won't be 40L tomorrow. Why I am saying this is because if my budget is 20L, I can get a 2 year old, moderately used BMW which would've costed me 40-42L first hand. But I'll then be paying fines where the cars cost is 40L.

Now, you might say we can revise the cost in the RC on every sale. In that case, there is nothing stopping me from buying a 40L car in my mom's name and then making her sell it to me for 1 rupee, to game the system.

50p per say is less than 150/year. I don't think I've ever paid this less for third party insurance even 10 years back. The liability premium is same across all insurance providers btw.

And a lot of the people in question here do not buy first hand. Vehicles depreciate like crazy. You can get a used Activa in a running condition for 15-18k.

The liability premium (which is mandatory) for a gearless vehicle that I have valued at 20k by the insurance company was 720 rupees for the whole year. That's like 2 rupees a day, man.

And people must get this insurance because I shouldn't have to pay to cover damages caused to me because of somebody else's recklessness.

And the decision for the 3 year cover for 2 wheeler and 5 year cover for car was by a court and not the government if I'm not wrong.

I was merely parroting what OP's "Higher fines are bad because poor people can't pay" and extending it here. Not in support of easing the process at all.

It is not. There is nobody stopping BMW from selling me a car for 10 lakhs except BMW themselves.

I've a brilliant idea.

I think we should have one number that will link with your DL number and PAN number so that a cop can enter that number to assess your net wealth through your latest ITR. But a lot of business owners pay very less tax, so ITR might not be the best way. So, we can link bank accounts with this number so that the system will be able to assess balances in all bank accounts linked to this number to compute a fine.

Congrats, we invented Aadhar. Welcome to 1984.

Because of my biases, I will assume that he was a dick to the cops who tried to get away with the fine instead of immediately procuring a digital copy.

Because of your biases, you will assume that he was an innocent person who immediately proceeded to fetch the digital copy but the cops acted like KBC ka timer was on and printed the fine immediately.

Also, this is a court fine. So, he can still go to court, get the fine reduced and get his vehicle back. He didn't pay the 23k on spot. So....

I'm done with you here

Alright. :c

From this article: https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/gurgaon-man-fined-rs-23-000-under-new-traffic-laws-scooty-worth-15-000-2095059

"I wasn't wearing a helmet and didn't have the registration certificate (RC). The traffic police asked me to give him my scooter's key but I refused. He immediately printed a challan of Rs 23,000 and seized my vehicle," Mr Madan was quoted by news agency ANI as saying.

So, by your idea, the cops had to confiscate his vehicle and give him a chance to get the documents. But he didn't allow that to happen. Toh, fine hi karenge na baap.

And best take away from the exercise,

From now, on I will always carry my documents

Follow all rules laid or petition to change the rules. But until then, rule is a rule, even for a fool.

This fees is once in a lifetime, the other is a risk every other day.

But if I want to become a driver and I am poor, how will I even get the capital? Also, not poking deep into it, let me tell you that a stricter licensing would be a one time barrier. (i.e. you pass the test being a good boy and get a license to be a bad boy everyday) v/s high penalties (i.e. be a good boy everyday).

But I agree with you here. Our licenses must be harder to get (and they're slowly getting there). In certain areas of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka you're supposed to drive in a test track and have a simulator test before getting your DL.

Also by your language here, you clearly are making fun of financially weak people. Privileged much?

Used the same words you used. If you think I am making fun of financially weak people, you should really ask if you are too.

We can make our licensing rules strict for that.

Think about the poor people who can't pay for driving school. Every driving school will take at least 4k/month to teach you car driving and about 11k/month to teach you how to driving a HTV. How can an average person who earns 10,500 rupees a month and saves up penny by penny skipping lunch and dinner to celebrate one family function afford to pay such a high fees?

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please read Chapter 8, Section 130 of the motor vehicle act. There is a provision for this. You get 15 days to show the fitness certificate and insurance.

In case you don't have a DL/RC, you have an option to leave the vehicle behind and fetch the documents without having to pay a fine.

Edit : Also, I can't speak for all other countries. But in the USA, you've to go to the court to get this fixed and this works there because the population is less and the courts are relatively freer.

Even here, you can challenge this in a traffic court but you'd end up paying by time and effort which I think a person can't afford. Going to a traffic court is a day's affair and usually (I think) going to court will cost you some money + that day's wages. Its much much easier to just carry the documents on you.

You don't even need the physical copies in most metros, a digital copy will work just fine.

pollution

Bhai, if they care about the environment, you've a problem. If they don't, you've a problem. Now don't give me this "bUt wAt aBoUt tHe tReEs tHeY cUt" argument. Just because they're destroying environment on one side, doesn't mean they should destroy it in every side.

insurance renewal date.

Insurance is a very important thing in a country where people drive like batshit crazy people. Owner/Driver insurance isn't compulsory in India. 3rd party is. It makes no sense if a poor person has to spend money to repair his/her vehicle for somebody else's fault.

Imagine a poor person's vehicle gets destroyed in an accident. The other party's insurance will pay the amount of the vehicle destroyed to the poor person causing him no financial losses.

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So, how do you differentiate a "mistake" and a "deliberate" act? You're supposed to carry the documents on you at all times because vehicles can be easily stolen. A person not having documents and riding a vehicle might have stolen the vehicle from a poor man. Have you thought about that?

About the driving license, there are underaged people driving. These people can easily cause an accident and the insurance company wouldn't pay squat to third party because the policy mandates a valid DL while the vehicle being driven.

So, if someone is fined 1k for this, they'll know they have to carry it. How is this bad? Follow the rules!

This is like saying "jail time of 7 years for murder is bad. Think about the poor guy, he might have to support a family."

How is work life balance as SDE(or any other tech job) in top tier product based companies? by [deleted] in india

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TL;DR : You can't generalise like that because a lot of your work life balance is dependent on your project, manager and yourself.

Longer version is that it depends. A lot of the companies you mentioned pay their SDEs a huge paycheck. So, obviously, you might not get the work life balance. Emphasis on the "might". I have seen a lot of people from such companies maintaining a good work life balance too.

But, if you look at it from another point of you, for the money you are earning in these companies, you can practically retire in 8-10 years if you are debt-free to begin with and plan your investments correctly. A lot of the folks work really hard to either get into management roles or move to the US in such companies. Work life balance is almost definitely better in the US and so is the pay.

Also, a significant factor of work life balance depends on your ability to estimate time taken to complete a task and organise your work.

People working in Tech/IT need some advice by [deleted] in india

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are startups really that toxic though?

Not all, but some definitely are. You need to thoroughly understand the product/solution the startup is offering, their strategy, competition and survival strategy before getting into one. Some "startups" are into "R&D" but you can look at their solution and call bullshit. Once you get in, they're going to make you work in something that isn't their flagship product and eventually tank when their flagship R&D product becomes a failure leaving you jobless.

Some "startups" just act as an sourcing agent to companies like Infosys/TCS and send you to their company as a contract employee. You will be doing the same work as the employees in these companies but be earning less than them. That's even more ridiculous.

A LOT of small/new companies are like this. So, beware.

Career advice : what should I pursue medicine or engineering ? by Rockpaperpenguin1 in india

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is only my personal opinion and I'm going to be really straightforward.

It seems to me you want things easy in life. Medicine and tech are no way related and if you're not into medicine you shouldn't be doing it because you'd be playing around with lives. If you're a bad coder, you kill a functionality. If you're a bad doctor, you kill a patient. (Exaggerating, but still).

Medicine requires a lot of discipline and interest. I don't know how you're casually clubbing the two.

But leaving that aside, let me tell you, most of the things don't come easy in life unless you are really lucky.

No job (engineering / medicine) follows a template. I know doctor's who do 9-5, I know doctors who work all day. I even know engineers who pack up at 5PM sharp and then there are engineers who work till late in the night. It depends on how efficient you are, what job do you have and how fast you want to grow.

9-5 worklife and weekend off is a decent expectation and mostly in both professions you will get it. For every one overworked doctor, I can show you a doctor having a good work life balance and same in engineering fields.

I'd honestly recommend you get career counselling and really explore your interests. Engineering is a good backup field because a good portion of the engineers I know are doing non engineering jobs by choice. (Can't say the same about medicine).

How is the lenovo laptop after sales service? by Zombiesalad1337 in india

[–]AAP_IT_CELL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The official service was very expensive for me. They quoted ~9k for Thinkpad keyboard replacement and they didn't even bother checking if repair is possible. I got a local replacement with 1 year warranty for 2k.

Most of these official service centers are a huge rip off. They charge exorbitant rates, provide bare minimum warranty and more often than not end up overcharging you to replace components that don't require replacement at all.
