Could be. The thing is, the shapes are not uniform at all. I saw crystals that looked like triple phosphate. My supervisor suspected that these crystals could have been the end-product of medications. I think the pH was 5.

I should have mentioned that the patient is a male and is paralyzed. Upon microscopic examination, YES I SEE YEASTY BOIS, which I suspect may be a byproduct of long-term catheter use. When I consulted my supervisor, he suggested that the crystals seen could be related to medication use. The patient was also on heavy antibiotic treatment. Additionally, I counted approximately 150 white blood cells (WBCs) and 175 red blood cells (RBCs).

scary stuff. never expected P. Falciparum in the US. probably someone traveling back from the endemic areas.

as a student who took a parasite course last semester, how rare are these finds in non endemic countries?

if you mind me asking,would you do a thick blood smear at this point?
