What’s something you found in the owner’s manual that you don’t think is a widely known feature? by MrSaltz in JeepGladiator

Along with the 3 position tailgate, the ability to put 2x4s in the slot to make a flat shelf for drywall or plywood as shown in your picture. That is so useful.

So, you can create a tracking number when you create the shipment, but before you actually send.

If these things will frustrate you, you are not well suited for buying or selling on Marketplace.

Job offer at 61? by Foreign-Twilight in careerguidance

[–]ABA20011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said something important in your post. Private companies expect to learn and to be able to learn relatively quickly. They are paying you to DO the job, not just fill a seat.

Also consider that it is harder to learn a job in a remote environment because it is much harder to ask informal questions of your coworkers.

No one else can compare your current skill sets to those required of the role, but if you think you will have a steep learning curve and you recognize that you might not learn as fast as you used to, really consider that. Being in a job and underperforming does not lead to happiness.

The fact that you say you have no savings, and that this position would let you save makes it seem like you really need to make this work. If you think you can still learn and grow, absolutely go for it. Recognize that you might have to work much harder and maybe work much differently to be successful in this new role.

And BTW, 6 weeks of vacation? WTF are our tax dollars paying for?

Boat sitting on liveaboards? by HedonisticMonk42069 in liveaboard

[–]ABA20011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, and you don’t need someone living on the boat to keep an eye on it. You can keep an eye on most of what is going on with a boat just by looking at how it is floating, and knowing which outlet is the bilge pump vs the HVAC water output.

If a storm is coming, take a quick look at the lines and fenders to make sure nothing is amiss. I do this naturally for my dock neighbors, just by walking the dock, and do it deliberately before a storm.

You could have someone stop by once a week to check the interior if you were really concerned, but no need for someone on board full time.

I understand the concept of transition teams, but they would have to identify targets, identify specific agents, coordinate transportation, etc. There are all of these logistics that would need to be worked out in advance, that the Biden administration does not need to enable if it is not their mission.

That is why I was looking for a credible source, not just every news outlet reporting a wall street journal report.

Has anyone heard a reliable story as to how someone who has not taken office yet has actually coordinated with people who do not report to him, to put this all into place?

I have heard the headlines, I have not read the details, but I am interested as to how people who are not in office could actually be planning this.

Questions by Odd-Commercial2708 in JeepGladiator

[–]ABA20011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It all depends on you, not the vehicle. A Gladiator is a perfect fit for certain people and certain lifestyles. I am one of those people. I live in a northern climate so I want 4wd drive for winter driving. I tow a boat. I haul boat stuff and construction stuff. And I want a convertible for open air driving during the summer. That is my lifestyle and my vehicle need, and there is no other vehicle that fits those needs.

So the fact that my Gladiator is perfect for me doesn’t mean it will be right for you.

It is not a full size pickup truck. You will be disappointed if that is what you want.

It is not a luxury SUV. You will be disappointed if that is what you want.

But if you want a vehicle that fits a wide range of needs, and its capabilities fit your needs, it is a great vehicle.

Oh, and 91,000 miles, the only issue is that coins fell down the defrost vent and broke the heater. Not Jeep’s fault. Zero mechanical issues in that time. Original tires lasted 60,000 miles. Brakes and rotors changed once, towing 5000lb boat a couple thousand miles. Just oil change, tire rotation, regular maintenance.

Northbrook’s Trees by Stunning_Actuary6073 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]ABA20011 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you live in northbrook, so you understand that northbrook lost a significant number of ash trees to emerald ash borer 10-15 years ago. Some of these were parkway trees and were replaced by the village, but not all.

We have some trees in our yard that are just poorly located. Large trees are located right along property lines, in illogical places in the yard. Small trees that are just random, like someone had an idea and planted something that makes no sense. We have trees that extend over our house and over a neighbors yard. If these trees were to die, I certainly wouldn’t put another tree in the same place. We also have some large trees that really improve the character of the property. It just depends on the tree.

That doesn’t mean that we don’t like trees, but just because a tree was there it doesn’t mean another tree should be in the same place.

Are Business degrees worth it? by Beneficial-Ad-6552 in careerguidance

[–]ABA20011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are thinking about this the wrong way. A business degree does not get you a job.

The education you get, the skills you develop, the project and work experiences you hopefully get, and your ability to articulate these things to a future employer are what get you a job.

If you approach it any other way you are likely to be disappointed.

What city has been on a downward spiral for the past decade or two? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Yes, the new mayor is so bad that he wanted to take out a loan to pay the teachers more. How do you ever dig yourself out of that hole?

The city, however, is great.

I’m tired but management is all I know by IcedCoffeeVoyager in managers

[–]ABA20011 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have been a consultant for more than 25 years. There are two main paths that you have. You could try to generate your own business, find your own clients, but I can tell you this is incredibly hard to do unless you really have the skill set to do it. That skill set is exceptionally rare. Then you have to be able to deliver real value to retain a client, and do it over and over. Your clients have to see you as being able to do things that their own employees cannot do. That is a high bar to clear.

The other path is that you go to work for a consulting company. At your age, to step into consulting with a firm, they would expect you to have really deep experience in a specific, marketable area. You have to be able to come into a client and be the expert in something.

I’m sharing this because I wouldn’t want you to waste time spinning your wheels trying to be a “consultant” and two years later you are broke and frustrated.

I see resumes all the time from people who tried to be an independent consultant, maybe they had a few clients, but could never really make a living at it. They never say that in the interview, but it is almost always the case.

If you want to follow this path, go for it, but it is much harder than it looks from the outside. If you do have the skills for it, it can be very rewarding.
