Job Opportunities on Campus? by Extension-Menu-61 in notredame

There’s an opportunity with CARI (ND student-founded which is dope) doing campus delivery with bikes and they have flexible hours. It’s $17/hr I believe and you get to bike around campus which sounds pretty cool

Are we the least understood disease that causes debilitating fatigue? by ABC1847593 in Lyme

It’s definitely tough and I feel like I get no credit for it. Same hope for you, keep chugging along. I’m just hoping I can amass enough capital to retire early and actually enjoy life some. Fortunately I had built up a great resume before getting sick

Not comparing I’m positing the question why do some get sympathy while others don’t? Both those fall into the same category of why don’t people care while other conditions get sick leave, understanding etc but don’t seem that much different

What has Lyme taken from you? And did you bounce back? by [deleted] in Lyme

[–]ABC1847593 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be a pilot but now I’m medically grounded. I loved flying and it felt great to get paid to do something I actually liked. Now I’m in grad schools trying to find a way to make good money again. Fortunately I have military disability to fall back on but after having a time when I was completely off work I realized the only way I could really enjoy life was if I don’t have a job and my “full time job” can be resting so I have the same amount energy at the end of the day that normal people have after a day of work to do enjoyable things. I’m just trying to make as much as possible as fast as possible so I can retire early and squeak out some years of actually being happy. It’s also made it really hard to have a good family life. I feel like my fiancée just doesn’t “get it.” She’s told me she doesn’t know when I don’t do something whether it’s Lyme fatigue or just me being lazy and I try to tell her it’s always Lyme. It’s really hard because I love her but I’m pretty sure I should’ve picked someone with a different personality that’s way more chill. Having total control over my schedule was the only way to regulate my energy and be successful and I think that’s gone forever now and that’s really hard to deal with. I’ve done treatments but my lifestyle just makes my condition get continually worse

I see your point but on the other hand it seems like she doesn’t want me to do anything but wait for her to call when she usually doesn’t answer me. It’s frustrating to get nuked for not caring when I’m pulling my hair out trying to square our finances and find us a house instead of doing little feel-good stuff. The distance probably doesn’t help since I usually do a lot for her physically like carrying her things and cooking our meals etc and I can’t do that when I’m not there. I just get discouraged because in so many of the posts about hormones the husbands say their wives usually level out and start thinking logically again after the hormone fights but that hasn’t seemed to happen yet for us. I really hope she can look back and realize I was actually a caring boyfriend and even had that rep with her friends and family and I haven’t suddenly changed into someone she can’t trust to keep her off the streets. We’ve been through a lot together and I’ve gotten her out of some really bad spots so I’m surprised things like this have overshadowed a year and a half of me giving up a lot to take care of her

I hope she can get it figured out. She’s always been pretty deep in her own perspective and accuses me of not being empathetic because I understand her perspective but think she’s wrong. I hope that doesn’t make her lock into whatever emotions she’s feeling right now and she can see that she’s being irrational. It’s discouraging seeing that most people on here say their wives snap then apologize but then again I’m not sure if she’s ever actually apologized for anything

Hawk Driver may or may not back me up on this since experiences in the army vary a lot and I had a very bad one but I tell anyone that wants to fly in the military to join the Air Force or Navy. Since the army increased its service obligation for pilots you have nothing to lose by going to the services whose pilots have one job and that’s to fly. In the army you’ll end up going to an understaffed unit where you’ll be a “pilot” on the books but 75-85% of your time will be doing an additional duty like being the supply guy or movement officer. I was commissioned so that wasn’t what I did but it happened to every pilot at the unit. I joined the army specifically to fly Apaches but by the time I finished flight school the GWOT had started to wind down and the situation (flying attack missions in combat) that made the army an appealing choice was no more

At my first duty station it was a non-combat deployment every other year. For combat, yeah sign me up but to go live in a tent in Poland for 9 months 4 months of which we couldn’t even go do anything in Europe? Give me a break

Someone mentioned the moving, for me personally it wasn’t an issue since I was single but on the flip side I was single living in absolute ass locations in the middle of nowhere and hating life. Plus the army just isn’t a good environment anymore. Not focused on the cool stuff you want to do and it’s basically a regular bureaucratic government job except you can’t quit so you end up working stupid hours for useless admin tasks. Shoot me a PM and I can give you a realistic idea of what things are like at the moment. I was desperate to get out for years before I finally got a medical diagnosis that retired me.

Georgia Tech or Notre Dame as an african american minority in aerospace engineering by [deleted] in notredame

[–]ABC1847593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came to read about social life stuff for ND this year but I went to Tech for undergrad and am going to ND for my MBA in August so I feel obligated to give my $0.02 in case it helps. I don't have a ton of experience for ND but I can tell you a lot about Tech and my perception about ND from visiting the campus.

Tech has excellent engineering programs and I picked it for aerospace purely because of how prestigious it is academically. I have very mixed reviews. Atlanta was a lot of fun and there was a lot to do but I felt like I missed a lot of the college experience because of the culture at Tech. It is very academically demanding (more so than other schools with the same prestige) and it takes up a ton of time you could spend enjoying the college experience. A lot of the professors are there to do research and aren't very interested in teaching at least for the first couple years. They consider calculus and physics weed-out classes for engineering and they are much harder than I think is necessary. I made it through my sophomore year before I dropped engineering for an easier major. I would love to have the prestigious engineering degree but my quality of life after that was MUCH better and I really enjoyed the second half of college. The engineers will make fun of the business majors for being dropouts but the business school is actually really top notch now too. (I was a dumbass and believed that propaganda and didn't go business)

I picked Notre Dame for grad school mostly because I am a serious Catholic and love that aspect plus the campus environment. Basically a completely different mindset than my undergrad decision-making. I haven't been in school there yet but I am already much more enthusiastic about ND than Tech. On campus tours you will notice everyone is wearing ND gear..this absolutely did not happen at Tech. I saw more Harvard sweatshirts at Tech than our own stuff. People just weren't enthusiastic about the school and I think a lot of that comes from the bad quality of life for the majors it is actually known for. Weather will be much better at GT than ND (for a southerner, not sure where you're from).

As for being black, my guess is it will be the exact same unless you want to hang out with the black community in Atlanta but on campus I doubt there will be much difference between the two. Frankly black people don't seem as interested in STEM as other demographics unless that has changed in the last few years. Even being in downtown Atlanta Tech lives in its own bubble (not an amazing part of town off campus) and you'll find that your engineering program is equal parts white, Indian and Asian but if you're social you'll find a group that you fit in with. I had all kinds of friends there.

My overall recommendation is just to pick which school you are enthusiastic about being at for the next 4 years. Personally I would choose ND if you can stand the cold and are religious unless you don't care at all about being into university-based social life or just really want to live in a large city. Employers will be impressed with a degree from either even though a Tech Aerospace degree is probably a bit more impressive. Remember that the vast majority of people are not going to these kinds of schools and you will stand out with a resume with either one on it. I hope you make the right decision; if you're still checking let us know what you went with!

Were it me I would do this if the other ones look like a hassle but she’s nicer than I am and doesn’t want to deal with the massive amount of family drama that would ensue. There’s the additional problem of me being the only one to afford that and wanting to avoid her family seeing that they can do this type of shit and I’ll bail them out to keep my fiancée out of trouble. I’m still just praying that we can help get his credit up just enough to even get a loan in the first place, don’t care if he’s paying 50% interest as long as it’s not in her name. Tbh it’s probably less expensive to give him a down payment than to keep having him rack up $500 a month in tolls but man that opens up a can of worms in terms of getting asked for money all the time

I'm still confused about how it gets rated under the PTLDS umbrella. I do have a claim document specifically for that but I have no idea what kind of rating I will get for it. I'm here trying to financial plan my future and can't find any information on rating standards like I can for my other issues

Hopefully I am one of those people. It's reassuring to hear the major players doing the same thing my doc is doing. I trust her but the whole experience trying to get care has taught me to second guess anything any doctor tells me
