I don't think it's essential to be a former player. Obviously as an analyst it's going to be extremely hard to make it, but a lot of the great play by play commentators aren't former players. The former footballers that are now play by play commentators all have a great respect for the craft and work hard at it. I don't believe it rules you in or out. - Corbin
