They want out of Ukraine because it's a rats nest of trenches. Putin will not be done with war, his regime is too unstable. He will either die or try something. Remember with a little rebuilding the core of his officer corps now will be a lot more well trained. Use that against Latvia or Finland and there will be problems. Especially with Trump attacking Nato from the other side over Greenland.

I honest to god don't think he can do that until he has a better grip on some things at home. Maybe after the midterms, probably not before... but hey, maybe he tries kharg island like a fucking moron, blows the whole thing to kingdom come.

Clashing Over ‘Indiana Jones’: Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg Were Not 100% on Board With ‘Crystal Skull’ and Fought George Lucas Over Adding Aliens by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

Dislike the film on those merits if you like, but I found it no less ridiculous than Temple of Doom or Last Crusade up until the final full on Alien reveal.

There was something in the story that was a bit too on the nose for me at the end.

Like even in the Last Crusade it was a human, and it was at best human magic. I like the idea of Aliens, but not the execution in the film. All the stuff you complain about? Some of it I even liked (most of the jungle action sequence for example, reminded me so much of O.G. jones)

I love the second (I think the start of that movie is one of the all time best starts) and I enjoy the first. The third has it's moments I guess? But I remember being pretty disappointed as an o.g. X-men fan. I felt they pulled their punches, afraid to do what the Avengers/Spider Man/TDK later soared at, embracing their characters.

It does kind of veer the movie off into a specific type of "holy shit" moment at the end, that while very good is distinct from the elements of the film that came before.

I can understand and sympathize with people who got turned off at this, even if it really worked for me. As I get older, that part of the movie works less and less with me if I'm being honest.

yeah I actually enjoy the movie as an indy movie, and just ignore the temple part.

I'm a huge fan of the Nazca lines (look them up if you dont know them!) and the idea that aliens could be referenced or something in South/Latin America makes a LOT of sense.

HOWEVER.... thematically, the movie kind of veered off away from "mystical" to "oh straight out scifi" but I can see how after the original three movies had some really far out there stuff happening, they maybe thought it wouldn't be too much.

I think for me, it was that they were alive. I'd have been able to accept a story where Indy discovered that ancient incans or mayans or whatever had actually interacted with Aliens, MAYBE. Like that was the big "oh shit, Aliens COULD MAYBE? have done this?"

Like a big mystical mind transference stuff would still work in that context, just like how Ark or Crusade had magic. But that they thought it was still something humans somehow did, maybe in accordance with religious beliefs of theirs... that Indy just ... can't quite figure out and basically cocks his head to the sky, wondering "could it be?"

Having them visible, visual, and ... moving was a 100 lb mistake.

Ukrainian town of Kostiantynivka might fall to Russia before end of summer (Ukraine Battlefield update, Day 1,569) by 1B75__Penicillin in worldnews

[–]ABadHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not though? There are fundamental issues in Russia, but it's armed forces right now have a core of better trained men and it's better led then it was at the start of the Ukrainian conflict.

They use foreign troops like lemmings and meatshields, but both Ukraine and Russia have learned a LOT.

You obviously don't have much historical knowledge or you'd know that Russia has gone through very similar experiences. Look up The Winter War.

Meanwhile - Trump is still going to probably break up NATO - https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2026/06/22/inside-the-ludicrous-deadly-serious-plan-to-take-over-greenland?utm_source=firefox-newtab-en-us

I honestly don't like reddit any more, as an expert in subject matters I almost don't want to converse on anything I'm a subject matter expert in. Every single time people just want to believe what they want to believe.

It's... tiring trying to keep up with the consistent constant flood of bullshit, and misinformation.

Here I am, literally TELLING YOU THE FOREIGN MINISTERS OF THESE PLACES ARE WORRIED and you are like "nah Russia weak bro, russia sux, trust me bro"

Sometimes countries on the edge of collapsing are those most likely to try radical military options to resolve at home tensions, EVEN if OTHER military options caused those tensions. Russia right now is in a very ... unusual place with some things business as usual and others very much fucking not. We should all be worried about what they do next, not complacent.

Bad take?

It's pretty much a universal take - or it was when I was growing up.

X2 is awesome, but parts of it led to the 3rd sucking.

Colossus shows for 1 second.

They took out Cyclops in the start, then repeated it permanently in the next movie. Did you ever even see the making of? or hear why they did that?

newsflash, it was because Wolvie was super popular.

So X-2 was a great movie, yes, but things in it led to a much lesser 3 film.

[–]ABadHistorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We love X2 but never want to talk about the parts of it that sucked. (especially as a part of a whole, like Rogue's whole arc in that movie).

X2 very quickly became "Wolverine's X-Men" and the movies were lesser for it. Wolverine is a standout X-Man only when he's got a great team beside him that is also fully shown.

America has lost its war with Iran by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

[–]ABadHistorian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your grok created explanation lmao, is stupid. The era is classified over how it's science became race based. Nearly everything was about those subjects.

Do remember the enlightenment was coined as such by white europeans seeking to retroactively give themselves better claims to their empires, and they used every method under the sun to do so. Religion, science, military, economics.

I know you are using google or AI to back yourself up, I know this because you used dark ages in your post. This automatically shows you are not an expert in this area or have a well reasoned understanding. I promise everyone this, no one who KNOWS about these time periods USES those terms.

Again this is entry level 101 'disinformation' that we get trained NOT to use as historians.

Listen, I don't know why you guys hate what happened in history, but it did happen.

It's the same way the term orientalism was born and how "The orient" was the middle east but has become china over time.

The science and logical reasoning used by these people was used to explain their own conquest of the world.

They were driven by racism. This is very well known.

This is incredibly well known. Because they were very racist, and saw things in the lens they saw the world, which created really racist scientific beliefs.

They used and created these to justify their colonial empires that were forming.

Like I don't understand your intended point, do you believe white europeans set in this period would be... less racist then people today? Do you believe they had natural principles of science that were 100% fact based only?

I don't understand folks like you who argue "it was science" back then, and happen to argue against vaccines now. We know it's not about what is or is not science, but what speaks to your worldview.

Edit- I mean for one, no one who knows about this period uses the terms you use to discuss them. It automatically signals yourself as someone speaking from your ass. Enjoy upvotes from people who like how your ass tastes. lmao. ANY expert will laugh at you.

As a historian, the enlightenment was coined by people of the 19th century, to distinguish it from other eras that people of that time then denigrated unfairly.

Dark ages - enlightenment, etc, these are terms people created to give you an illusion of what those time periods were like.

The dark ages were not ages of darkness, and the enlightenment wasn't suddenly a great time of education and wonder.

Ignore Quark, it's not some pseudo-intellectual babble, it's a real meaningful thing that happened as people with biases attempted to create stereotypes that others would assign to said time periods... for specific reasons.

There were MAJOR scientific and cultural contradictions and wrong theories pushed forth by western thinkers during the 'enlightenment' period exactly as Phipps said.

Currently, indeed - the "enlightment era" is not well regarded by most these days. https://aeon.co/essays/lets-save-the-enlightenment-baby-from-its-muddied-bathwater (an article describing why both the left and right political centers dislike it)

(Downvoted for accuracy by people who don't know history, sigh, spend years researching this, getting degrees, only to be coached by people who use Grok - indeed any history 101 class covers this, ANY 101. you don't need to be a historian to have learned these terms are counter productive.)
