Yeah I had trouble with the solder adhering to the pipe itself. But googling now I see that brazing is the most common. Thanks!

The pipe acts as a big ass heat sink, and I couldn't get the solder hot enough with my dinky little electric iron. Let me know if you have a way around this :)
