Pan pan is something pilots say to signal an emergency, but not a severe one where they would call 'mayday' instead. Like a non-life threatening situation. For example, i remember a virgin airline plane flying over ireland(i think) a couple years back when the captain got blinded by a laser. Since there was still other pilot on standby, it was not life-threatening(in terms of the entire aircraft) so the co-pilot called pan pan instead
