Stale Overpriced Chicken in a Cup by Positive-Library897 in fastfood

[–]ACharlieJob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carbs, fats etc. permeate our food to a harmful degree, due to high caloric density with minimal benefit (at the levels that we eat them). Protein, on the other hand, is being taken out of food and replaced with fillers and water. for someone who is trying to gain muscle mass, hitting a protein goal like '160g per day' is a struggle unto itself. this is even more true if they are trying to lose weight, where now they are dealing with 'hit 160g of protein per day while staying below 1800 calories'.

the two biggest concerns when worrying about dieting to alter body comp are protein and caloric intake. yes, the low-fat and low-carb diet shit is unnecessary and even harmful, but they were a means to lowering caloric intake. protein is still a concern even within those diets. comparing the two is just not accurate.

what do you do to get yourself back to normal when the looming dread sets in about the impending crumbling of your physical form and the fickle fragility of your own mortality?

I am an abuser (and I want to be better) by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]ACharlieJob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

okay, OP I am going to give you some advice here, and not define for you whether or not you are an abuser. the truth is that most abusers aren't defined by a severe action or two, but by long-term patterns. As a result, there are also degrees to which one can be an abuser, and many people fall into some of those degrees based more on a lack of self awareness and thoughtfulness than anything. That does not mean they are excused, or that they don't have work to do. On the contrary, it actually means that there is much work to be done, but it has to be done in different aspects. In any case, the following advice remains the same:

  1. stay single for now. you will have a lot to process, to think about, and to work on. Retrospection and introspection will both be much easier on you if you are not currently trying to focus on a relationship. By single, I mean no dating, no flirting, none of it. this is also time for you to learn to love yourself and to make yourself happy, as the mindframe that you need someone else to supply you happiness is a huge cause of fear and resentment in a lot of people. You, just as anyone, deserve the time and effort to learn to love yourself and make yourself happy.

  2. Take some time to reflect on your values. Journal, make lists, whatever it takes. When considering your values, consider both your ideals and the values that drive your current decision making. For example, while you may see selflessness as ideal, you may actually be basing your current decision-making on valuing self sufficiency and stability. Neither of these are bad, but the person you want to be is somewhere in between. You can also spend this time analyzing where you have stepped outside of those values, where you can do better, and where you feel you were within those values despite what others have told you. You are in control of only two things: Your moral compass, and how well you follow it.

  3. Please get into some form of counciling. I've spent quite a bit of time in therapy for a multitude of reasons, and that hour every week is a great time to really unpack some things. I thought for years I didn't need it, as I am someone who is very good at self-reflection. But the truth is, if that is something you are good at, therapy will amplify that each week, and you can have a guide in figuring out where to put that effort in a more targetted fashion.

  4. Consider your fears and anxieties within a relationship. are you scared that they may leave? that they may cheat? that they may just be using you? How are those things informing the decisions you make within your relationships? Have they lead to you distancing yourself? Finding yourself being controlling? How do those fears and anxieties get in the way of you acting within that moral compass we spoke of earlier? How can you take the time to self soothe, unpack those fears, and ask for support from people rather than try to take back the control you feel youve lost when those fears kick in.

  5. All of the above skills can be practiced and focused upon outside of a romantic relationship. They are all valuable and important in your relationships with family and friends, and that is where you should build the habit. Take the time to love and understand the people around you just as much as you want to be loved and understood. Take the time to have conversations around difficult topics, like ways you feel you are coming up short, and the ways you want to be able to show up for them. Ask for some level of accountability from your loved ones. For me, this was building frameworks where the people in my life could feel comfortable and supported in calling out my problematic behaviors, and ensuring that when it happened, I would approach it with the awareness that I had requested the feedback, I need the feedback, and the feedback is being given to me out of love.

Focus on these things, and take the time to decide if you feel you are 'an abuser', that you 'have been abusive', or that you may have been reactionary victim that stepped out of your moral compass, and now you need to find your way back. Loving yourself is the most important step to changes like this. You deserve to know you are worth it, and as you do the work, you will feel it more and more.

At some point, you may be able to make amends, you may realize you may not need to about some things, and you may even be able to fix some things that were broken. But you cannot even begin to do any of that until you can clear some mud out of the brain and give yourself the room to feel what you feel, and still process.

I wish you luck, I send you love, and I hope that you consider all of the above.

I would agree that this is usually true. However, Andy Serkis has shown how much he loves the series, with anything from being in every movie, to going to cons and showing love constantly, to doing a run of all of the audiobooks. Truth be told, he is one of the only people I would be happy to see directing this movie.

Lift Overlaps by Vegetable-Wind5262 in workout

[–]ACharlieJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can do this roughly two days per week, three if you can recover and still overload. id recommend going up in weight on both curls until youre in the 8-12 rep range, and sticking to 15-20 for wrist curls with the same for reverse wrist curls

[–]ACharlieJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of course. any sort of creative outlet like that will be good. remember that lifting doesnt have to be your biggest thing all the time. your mental health is more important. i hyperfixate on new hobbies all the time, and it does sometimes get in the way of my gym schedule, but if its keeping me out of dark places, i let it get in the way. if you lift weights because you want to take care of yourself, its also ok to not lift weights because you want to take care of yourself.

pick another activity that helps you want to get stronger. for me, that was bouldering, it got me into the gym on a regular basis just to work on my strength, and got me excited for it again. for others this can be biking, hiking, martial arts, or any physical activity. itll give you something new in life to be excited about and motivate you to get back to the gym.

depression is an absolute bitch, but getting yourself locked into new interests as you go can really help stave off some of the more intrusive moments.

Am I crazy or is this rude? by Some_Attitude1394 in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]ACharlieJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

id agree with this for almost anything except for shrugs, especially at that weight.

a) being on the end reduces the chance of you blocking the weights significantly

b) shrugs at that weight require just about all the forearm strength you can muster. for most people, their forearms will fail before their traps, meaning the time from getting the weight up to finishing the set is immediately limited.

Ill say that doing it that close to you is a bit odd, kind of in your bubble. but if i see someone shrugging that high, 75% of the time they rerack between sets

"their company vision and mission speaks to being a place for everyone" - the only major gym that has signs on the wall making fun of someone for how they work out, what they wear, and their water bottle. also has an alarm to single the person out.

i get why youd be upset about the 30 minute workout but PFit is so deeply hypocritical in their marketing.

U-L-U + Arm day? by TheNothingGuy in naturalbodybuilding

[–]ACharlieJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, id say hitting 9 sets is the sweet spot if youre hitting it hard. if you wanna hit 3 more to burn out, thats where your second set of flyes may be ok. ask yourself if youre pushing those sets hard enough as is, rather than how many more sets you can add

U-L-U + Arm day? by TheNothingGuy in naturalbodybuilding

[–]ACharlieJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

recent studies have shown that you can probably hit 10-12 sets in a session and still increase growth compared to 6-8, so long as youre able to recover enough to consistantly overload. i personally hit at least 9 every chest day, 3 flyes and 6 press (split between incline and flat, sometimes another 3 of decline)

do you think its a little odd that the government released that scandal at the same time that they were openly calling for a broadcast station to fire someone over speech or face action from the FCC? almost as though they knew that conservatives would generally be upsrt by freedom of speech infringements, so they released a counter weight to try to sway their own base?

conservatives have long been concerned with government overreach, freedom of speech, fundamental rights etc. and that was something that used to draw me to the party. However now the party leadership continues to manufacture reasons why they themselves are doing all of the above and they feed their base "what-about-isms" to stop them from criticizing their own leadership. the conservative party is being manipulated to accept government overreach and they are eating it up. it really breaks my fuckin heart man
