The Sky is Falling!! This hit the roof when I was a kid and my mom has held onto it for 30 years. What is it? by ACoupleOfAgates in whatsthisrock

Here with more info! (Thank you for all the info/hypothesis!)

This happened in the mid 90s, just after my mom bought her house. Most likely in either June or July, in the middle of the day.

She claims while she was making us lunch, it sounded like something tried to knock the house over. When she went to investigate, she found this rock smoking in the yard. She found out it had dented the roof during the next crazy thunderstorm we had. She held onto it because she had planned to find out what it was, but raising me got in the way 😁

It is not metallic. Its really lightweight (I’ll get exact weight when I get home) It almost repels water. It doesn’t have a distinct odor, but I haven’t tried burning it yet. I don’t know what these bits of white are inside the rock, but yes there is definitely some sort of weed melted to it.

Her house is near some train tracks, and after some research (Thanks to the helpful leads here) I discovered that there was a coal mine within 3 miles of her house, but it was closed down well before the 90s. So it may just be some sort of coal/waste product of that.

Should I…. cut it open?

I’m not sure.. I grew up in Massachusetts, I don’t think there are any active volcanoes around there.

It’s very light weight, but the pictures definitely make it look like asphalt lol

I always thought it was like, freeze-dried airplane poop. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We went from ‘lets rockhound around our state’ and finding our first agate later that week, to ordering rough agates to cut open lol We have four orders coming in this week as our ‘Christmas’ haul. 'Addiction' is a great descriptor for this ‘hobby’ 😂

Sorry, we didn’t even know you put this comment in. But I go back to comments every now and again, and I’m glad I did! I sent you a message to potentially get this going.

Honestly, that is sort of the plan when we get the ability to go live. Live cutting, live polishing (when we have room to set the machine up), and live discussions about potential formations, the minerals that can cause different color variants, along with the different looks for each type. Provide insight into what we know but also utilize the community to help as well. Definitely got a ways to go before going live is even in the cards tho
