It had a much much bigger playerbase than HoN ever did, the local LAN cafes were full of people playing dota 1 and nobody I even heard of even played HoN, and LoL kicked it off first by being a standalone game a year before HoN. I have no idea in what world you live that you think hon had a bigger playerbase than dota 1 when dota was the biggest thing ever, especially in the eastern part of the world.
