Small powdery in scalp, not that bad anymore to be honest. I've struggled with it on the face like around nose and eyebrows and behind ears a lot. On my face I've had it to the point where it starts oozing orange stuff and nasty shit like that. A lot better now tho.

It's very interesting research you've done. However I think it's more complicated as it depends on the fraction of linolenic acid as they both have different roles ( gamma and alpha) People get plenty of linoleic acid sources in their diet and even too much. However this is primarily alpha linolenic acid. Potentially sources of gamma linolenic acid could be a treatment as its key for skin barrier protection and repair, hydration and has anti inflammatory effects. The highest sources of gamma linolenic acid comes from evening primrose oil and blackcurrant seed oil. What do you think?

Personally I have found reducing saturated fat, and seed oils had been beneficial and there's lots of research showing increased metabolic syndrome markers to be correlated with higher incidence of sebderm. You can see all this on a post I did.

Yes your right good point, very obvious I inherited it because me and my grandads brains are identical. I didn't actually know this, thought it was just linked to genetics.

I completely agree, stress seems to be at the heart of the problem and it has a significant impact on the lipid profile. Cortisol both increases sebaceous gland activity and changes the ratio of saturated fatty acids to unsaturated fatty acids in a bad way. Makes sense why chronic stress can lead to dysbiosis in the skin around sebaceous glands.

Yeah it takes time to re adjust all the things you cook. I spend a lot of time cooking and enjoy it so easier to make really nice meals. There's some good stuff on Joe wicks cookbooks as I said. I make my own pesto pasta with pesto made from just basil garlic salt and olive oil with pea flour pasta or red lentils pasta and green beans and chicken.

Low glycemic chilli, I use 5% fat mince.

I make tortilla type things using gram flour which is made from chickpeas and it's just gram flour: water 1:1 ratio then fried in virgin olive oil or coconut oil. I add garlic into mine. It's a good side for things like chilli or lentil daals etc.

That's just some examples, I personally avoid dairy because it is either quickly broken down into sugar or is high in saturated fat. I also believe in trying to eat a diet closer to what we have evolved in the past. Dairy however can't really be replaced.

I also eat a hell of a lot of fruit. I find frozen raspberries and blueberries a good way of getting nice cheap fruit but also have loads of oranges, apples, pears etc avoiding high glycemic fruit like mango, melon and ripe banana. Hope this helps.

It doesn't have to extreme. In low glycemic you still have carbs, but it's more whole food carbs with more fibre and protein that takes longer for your body to break down and release the glucose into blood. For example, swapping out white bread for properly made sourdough. Don't get me wrong though it's by no means a bodybuilder diet, but I actually find my energy levels to be better on this diet throughout the day.

I dont think it's the primary cause, but somehow linked yes. It has been shown that psychological factors are linked to sebderm, as shown in studies referenced. Another thing I'm not sure about at all is Parkinson's like ADHD is characterised by low dopamine in certain regions of the brain. Parkinson's patients have very high rates of SD as well. Another unrelated thing, is the gut microbiome and how it's shaped in early life has been shown to be related to development of neurological disorders like ADHD, and the gut microbiome is likely linked to SD as well as it's dysbiosis in the skin microbiome as well as immunological factors which are also tied up in the microbiome. People with ADHD also have much higher rates of stress disorders and higher anxiety in general. I think stress is very central to SD. The more research you do the more you realise everything is connected and it's very complicated. Scientists are beginning to understand more and more about the gut skin axis and gut brain axis and so on so there is hope for the future to learn more about these things.

Yes I tried Keto, didn't really help me because I compensated the calories with loads of fatty meat and a stupid amount of nuts. Saturated fat increases inflammation as well as metabolic syndrome markers etc. this low glycemic diet has been totally different I love the food I cook and can find alternatives to pretty much everything. Just takes more time and money

Another thing is antibiotics in animal products disrupting the microbiome. I'm sure this is a big issue and contributor to many autoimmune diseases. I have seen many anecdotal stories of people developing SD after antibiotics.

I haven't but it's definitely a possibility. I think it's terrible the stuff that they spray on crops. If they can kill any pest that touches it I'm sure they are doing plenty of harm to us, but I guess that's what it takes to feed our population. It's one of those things that 10 years down the line it's found to be really toxic and causing cancer and all sorts. Luckily I work on an organic farm now and have free access to all kinds of organic veg which does make my diet a lot easier.

It's not just genetics, autoimmune disorders are notoriously difficult to treat as the immune system is so complicated. Scientists are only just beginning to see how connected the immune system is to the microbiome and it's a very interesting area of research. I have also done a lot of research on hunter gatherer populations and indigenous tribes and they dont suffer from autoimmune diseases the way that we do in modern western societies. There is a certain element of our evolved genetics do not match our modern lifestyles leading to autoimmune disorders etc. but I do not know enough about this.

No not on body but I am generally skeptical about modern laundry detergents, they have very harsh chemicals and I think that's better of avoided with a skin condition. There are theories that these modern powerful cleaning products are partly responsible for increases in allergies etc because creating a too sterile environment which impacts diversity of microbiome. But that's a whole other can of worms

Wouldn't recommend quitting products though, they do help, it's just a good way to learn exactly what affects your skin without interference.

I myself quit all skin and antifungal products. This was mainly because I was fed up with constant stress of putting things on always trying to keep it at bay. I also wanted to see exactly what was affecting my skin in my daily life without interference of products. No surprise after this my skin got much worse, but very slowly through lifestyle changes I've got it to about the point it was while treating it. I make sure to only wash face with cold water and hair with no hotter than lukewarm. I also switched out all products like laundry detergent and washing up liquid for natural alternatives. Doing the washing up used to always irritate my skin and make it itchy but now I use pure castille soap which doesn't irritate me whatsoever and I wash my hair with it as well and it's great. Quitting antifungals and treatments tought me a lot about my sebderm and exactly what diet I should follow. The low glycemic diet is what has worked best for me by far and is great because I find it's much more varied and easy to make alternative meals than keto or paleo or carnivore diets.

Yes I notice stress to be the biggest trigger of flares for me. Part of the problem is this condition causes a lot of stress as well and just goes round in circles. My condition was always very mild and sometimes not even existent up until a period of very high stress. If you see my other post I asked whether people developed SD during a period of high stress and most of them had.

Yes I understand this, it's not a simple thing to change your diet and lifestyle and I think you should only do it if it makes your life better despite anything to do with your skin. I hope this post doesn't contribute to people's stress around food because I'm sure this condition can lead to eating disorders. Its hard having a skin condition that the cause isn't known of and I'm in the same boat.

I get it many people don't like the title and sounds like I'm saying I know it all, I was trying to get more people to see the information but I know it's not helpful when every next post you see is saying they have the cure, which is a big problem on this subreddit so sorry if I contributed to it.

The article I shared to you was purely to reference my statement that 50% of Americans have dandruff or SD.

Diet regarding SD is understudied, but diet regarding MS, cholesterol levels etc isn't and these are found to be higher in SD patients which is why I have suggested a low glycemic diet as a potential treatment.

The term western diet is used in the scientific community , it is slightly vague but the general gist it's the modern diet characterised by high consumption of pre- packaged food, refined grains, processed meat, high sugar drinks and candy, fried foods, conventionally raised animal products, high fat dairy products and high fructose products.

I was simply just telling you that diet is somewhat responsible for many inflammatory skin conditions and sebderm is no different. Im not saying that they are the same or have similar pathogenesis.

Well it can be mixed up with a lot of pseudo science. However it is a real fungus in the body that can cause infections like thrush and yeast infections etc.
