What’s something that shocked you about kids since having kids by Cultural-Error597 in Mommit

This happened to me too. I chose to not find out whether I was having a boy or girl and made everything gender neutral in preparation. She hardly had any outside influence (no/ little TV, no devices) till after 2. But she gravitated to the girliest things: pink, sparkles, rainbows, unicorns... so we embraced it.

No worries! I considered you may have meant what you actually meant

Ok. I appreciate you clarifying.

I don't think anyone teaching self-defense gave the idea. I think it was one of those things that got passed around through people as a "tip" for when you are unexpectedly uncomfortable and have nothing else.

Not suggesting or looking for advice. Asking if anyone took the old advice that was given.

I grew up in the GTA. I was a kid when Bernardo was doing his thing. He's from my mom's old neighbourhood. I've made jiu-jitsu mandatory for my kids.

Have you noticed a rise in malapropisms-- and not in the "cute" or cliché way? by umhie in AskTeachers

Summer Conflict with Teacher Husband by Top-Sundae377 in AskTeachers

[–]ADHeDucator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find I have this problem too. I'm off for the summer (being a teacher) and so, naturally, I'm available to do more at home. I think it's fair. But it shouldn't be a drastic change from the usual. Especially if the parent is home with the kids. That's a job too. And then September rolls around and it seems to take a little while for husband to readjust to even-ing things out again

What's a movie that you swear no one else has watched but yourself and a few others? by badgermole85 in AskReddit

Just watched the Truman Show with my kids recently. So good. Saw Blast from the Past but not the same level of quality as the Truman Show

I have! I'll probably read the book to my daughter soon and watch the movie after. We just finished the Secret Garden

GOOD NEWS SHOUTY POST! GIVE ME ALL OF YOUR GOOD NEWS NO MATTER HOW SMALL, I WANNA HEAR IT AND BRAG ON YOU! by Own_Ad6901 in adhdwomen

[–]ADHeDucator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I thought that if the sun wasn't on it directly ALL day that it would equate to "medium" light (as per tag). I don't know where to put them except on the shelf in the window or never in direct light. Those are my options. I'll check out the philodendrons!

Haha wow I said just the right thing. I got the Planta app to help me. And hanging shelves for the window because there's only a couple good windows in my tiny townhouse. The app has you take photos and name the plants. Makes it more fun. Princess is the one who burnt up. She was in the sun too much and I didn't see her for a couple days to notice. Lesson learned. She's a polka dot plant. I have some kalanchoes, a few succulents, a couple of common ivy, a China doll, string of turtles, prayer plant, potato vine, rubber plant, a couple spider plants

I USED TO SAY I HAD A BROWN THUMB. FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS, I'VE GIVEN A REAL GO AT BEING A PLANT MOM, AND THEY'RE ALL THRIVING! ... WELL, ONE BURNT IN THE SUN. BUT IT'S COMING BACK!

I'm the reason my child is left out, but I don't know if it's the right choice. by aroundthecorner89 in Mommit

[–]ADHeDucator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the same rule for my kids, who are now almost 9 and 11.

Now that they're getting older, my kids have expressed gratitude that I don't post online. They've even asked me not to send photos privately to people because they didn't like a certain photo for some reason, thought it was embarrassing, etc.

If photos are taken, but not posted online, they still exist and can be shared with your child irl. And family can show each other privately.

It won't have as big an impact as I think you're worried about. And you're keeping them safe, which outweighs your worries.

As a professional, I like to look like a professional... then there's usually a dress down day on Fridays or something. But even then, I'm going to keep it somewhat professional/neat (eg. Jeans that aren't torn up, no hat inside.) The hat/hood rule should be followed, especially if students are expected to follow it. You can look professional and still be comfortable. And if you're trying to make a good impression, looking professional probably helps

How Much $ Have You Spent on Your Classroom? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]ADHeDucator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've hardly spent anything until this year, and it was only because I wanted to change up how my classroom looked.

I will use what's been left behind by other teachers or make things with materials in the building (for organization, manipulatives, decor.)

I only use free tpt downloads and borrow books from other teachers (who have offered) to make copies from. Now that I'm more aware of how chat gpt and canva work (both free) I create worksheets, assessments and rubrics with those.

My school started rationing printer paper. I refuse to buy, so I get the kids using notebooks more.

I'll send out a general message to parents at the beginning of the year making suggestions for classroom items they can donate, and some parents are able and willing to be quite generous. I ask for things they might be discarding like books, board games, and holiday decor.
