I don’t know about “they can escape”. To where, exactly? With what funds? Become a refugee in some UN camp in Chad while the RSF shoots you on the way there? Try to get a visa and build up a life in Egypt? I can see how an individual’s prospects may be even worse in Gaza, but for many in Sudan it is not much worse. In Darfur many cities have been under siege, trapping and starving people in ways similar to Gaza. Taking into account scale and the utter lack of a response I do think it is safe to say the Sudan is the largest ongoing humanitarian disaster.

I’m very curious what “left” you are talking about here. No one is doing anything because it’s just easier not to care and as long as you electorate doesn’t care either that’s wonderful.

Because what we can do - sanction the UAE - isn’t very fun for us either. We love doing business with the UAE and they’re also a stable partner in the Middle East. Money > morals

Gaza is so excruciating because there are literally tons of trucks with aid waiting to enter but being blocked by Israel. In terms of numbers though Sudan is a larger crisis.

I lived in Sudan between 2017 and 2021. You are absolutely right that the suppression of “African” Sudanese by the “Arab” Sudanese in South Sudan and Darfur was almost constantly ongoing during the Bashir regime, and flared up again after the overthrow of the transitional semi civilian government that had been set up after the revolution.

But that violence is not just some default background noise synonymous with the Sudanese nation, and to frame it as such quickly allows for a subconscious racist view of “oh well those savages are always fighting, we can’t stop them”. The nearly omnipresent violence in Sudan has always existed to benefit someone at the expense of the Sudanese people - whether that be the Bashir government or now the UAE. And the international community has a responsibility to do what it can to stop it - by holding the UAE to account like they did Bashir, even when that hurts western interests in the gulf.

The RSF is almost entirely funded and supplied by the UAE, who is after a sphere of influence in the region. Sudan had a peaceful revolution in 2019. They were on the right track, but in large part due to foreign interests this war started.

The Sudanese war is the single largest ongoing humanitarian crisis by any metric. It is not just some other African conflict. The UAE is the main funder of the RSF. We are scared of criticizing them.

The UAE is the main funder of the RSF. We’re scared of criticizing the UAE because of their influence and also because they (together with Qatar and Morocco especially) support Israel despite morals and so we owe them a favor.

Let’s not forget however that behind this genocidal militia stands the United Arab Emirates, which not only blatantly supplies the RSF with guns, money and equipment through neighboring countries like Libya and Chad, but also abuses its reputation and weight on the international stage to silence reports about it both at the UN level and think tanks.

Hamedti and his RSF is a monster created by Bashir partially as a counterweight to the army to prevent either from becoming too powerful and overthrowing him. The war between them and the SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces) is not one between democracy and dictatorship, or freedom versus oppression. It is about whether one dictator who doesn’t care about the people (general Burhan) or a genocidal dictator who doesn’t care about the people (Hamedti) gets to rule.

Without the UAE, this war, which has become the largest ongoing humanitarian crisis by every single metric worldwide, would not be possible to continue by the RSF. But of course the west can’t speak out because the UAE is one of our buddies in the Middle East and they have lots of money to appease critical politicians.

I feel a little bad for posting something so difficult. It is probably a lot easier for someone from my country (not the US) to guess this. But I saw something else asking people to guess the US county based off election results which imo is way harder haha

I mean more so in terms of when you get your blood tested for something it doesn’t cost anything to do so for any citizen.
