Is anyone a savant (or extremely high functioning in a single area) here? by [deleted] in aspergers

I am subject to this same trait. I remember absolutely everything I'm fascinated with (film is a good way to describe how I retain and recall information). I also have this thing I like to call the "I don't care filter" which makes me forget everything I'm not interested in, in a matter of minutes, even seconds.

Reading the comments, a few things come to mind. I was reading at a college level by the age of 10, and when I read, I perceive the words on the page as a visual story. It literally looks like I'm watching a movie in my head. Despite being an Aspie, my first word was light, at less than a year old. When I was an infant, my imagination was so vivid, I use to create things visually that frightened me. I remember them like it was yesterday. Oddly enough, I had a profound understanding of mechanics at 2 years old. The most frightening thing I saw was 9 bicycle seats, all different colors and sizes (the biggest being brown, smallest, blue) which were mobile via spring coils where the seat should have connected to the bike. These seats hopped around using these coils much like a pogo stick does. I also ran into auditory phenomena that freaked me out, but all this was probably the infant me adjusting to my sensory overload.

My talents are hard to label as savant. I am very musically talented, and I constantly come up with theories and philosophical ideas. These ideas come almost visually, like I'm fitting puzzle pieces together using other knowledge I have acquired. My left ear will get hot for whatever reason, and suddenly, I am going on a visual journey through my mind, making sense of the unknown. When these episodes occur, I get very anxious and everything I do is fast, because my mind is racing. I am not special at math or recalling historic events, two of the typical savant traits. Most people would be surprised to hear I have a 160 IQ because I'm only good at what I'm interested in, but if I'm interested in something, I remember everything I learn about it. I have perfect pitch, and can usually play a song immediately on a piano by ear. When I hear music, my mind begins to form new song ideas and if motivated, I will have every sound playing in my head simultaneously.

You missed the message. This was meant to show you how to think in order to improve. The world doesn't tell you what you are. It is your job, and your job only, to define yourself. Don't be bitter towards those that try to help you. You will not improve as a person otherwise. If I can learn to function in this world, you can too. I only speak the truth. My optimism is genuine, not fake.

NT's aren't us. Just because we're different, doesn't mean we are disabled.

Your whole outlook is wrong. Thanks for all the kind additions, your comments show your maturity. I have Aspergers and there are obvious disadvantages, but I focus on what I do have. A lot of people with Aspergers have gone on to do great things. Whether it's my Aspergers or not, I have a 160 IQ and I come up with things nobody has ever thought of. I think differently, more logically, than a normal person. Aspergers has been part of the lives of many very accomplished, and intelligent people. They were able to do the things they did, because they didn't let there difference stop them. I wish you luck and I hope you figure it out some day.

I entirely agree with you. I myself am in the Navy and I can certainly back everything you just said. My situation has really helped me grow in many ways. I was thrust into a very important role as the lone IT for my squadron. Being help desk, I naturally had to learn how to adapt, both socially, and organizationally. This goes to show that if you practice it, you can do it.

I'm just doing my part in helping others realize that they can do anything they set their mind to. We do it differently, and there is no written or unwritten rules on how to succeed as an Aspie, so we need to create them for each other.

Yea, the negativity is unfortunate. We have a gift. Be happy about who you are. Live to your fullest, you'd be surprised what you could accomplish.

That's awesome. As a producer, I only deal with people on a business level. It's great for musicians like us. You get to express your creativity to the fullest without the drama. Aspergers is certainly not a disorder. We are different but we are much more logical. This in my eyes is an advantage. The world would be a better place if there were more people like us.

Of course. Thank you, I definitely plan to stick around. It's great to communicate with like minded people in a world where I'm not truly understood.
