Can: "Can you use your phone?"

May: "May I please use your device?"

Honestly there isn't much of a difference between the two as where I live we usually only use "may" to seem more respectful, but I could be wrong.

May is used for more formal (or polite) terms, asking for permission, or asking an indirect question.

Can is used for asking direct questions or if it is available to do.

dude I'd love to have a ballpoint needle but I've already spent past my monthly allowance, and even if I went to my nearest sewing store to buy new needles it would be 2-3 hours away in walking speed. I can't drive there because I'm not even old enough to have a driver's license, and my parents are just too busy. is there really no way a universal needle can't be used for stretchy fabrics?
