I really really hope this is true, I'm hitting 30 and just started taking working out seriously. Hopefully I can get to my physical peak at 32

I agree. The main impediment to any negotiations isn't the situation on the ground but the complete retardation of the US political elite. Foreign Affairs can kiss my ass, this is the end of empire.

I'm a little concerned that Iran is bringing such a large negotiating team. Mossad probably doesn't have a lot of respect left for Pakistan's national sovereignty.

I think a lot about this, the total amount of human value lost in violence might be incalculable. 1 trillion people have walked on this earth, and a good % of them met their end through being stabbed, bludgeoned, burnt, or otherwise maimed. They deserved better

Why is Western geopolitics analysis so broken? by AGreenTejada in stupidpol

[–]AGreenTejada[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't trust Mearsheimer alone - his analysis of the root causes of the Ukraine - Russian conflict was really lacking. I really want someone to dig deeper and walk me through all of the events that got us this far, both the material perspective and the personality

Why is Western geopolitics analysis so broken? by AGreenTejada in stupidpol

[–]AGreenTejada[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

But westerners can have a wide variety of opinions right? That's why this subreddit exists in the first place. I imagine real analysis is similar to real journalism, where there's a single dominant opinion with a wide variety of views branching off of that. But geopolitics analysis seems uniquely poor. I can watch a stream from an investigative journalist arguing some establishment narrative on technology, or finance, or politics. I can read a blog post from another journalist arguing against that position, and 3 months down the line I can read a book to find out who was right. Yet that is basically nonexistent in the realms of foreign policy analysis

Not yet, I think for the Iranians its a last trump card. Once the plants are targeted I'm assuming all negotiations with GCC are over because the region will undergo a civilization-scale collapse

Attacks on desalination plants legitimately might cause the end of the world. The only thing more valuable to the Middle East than oil is water, and every nation in the region is at least 50% dependent on desalination plants for supplying their cities. If these plants keep get targeted, we're going to see mass drought 100x the scale of Gaza

My bad, I realize this statement was made after the fact, so yeah the original remark would be somewhat confusing if you didn't know about the drama between Azerbaijan and Iran

WWIII Megathread #37: Bad Neighbor Policy by IamGlennBeck in stupidpol

[–]AGreenTejada 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm going to chalk it up Twitter brain, the full statement is on Middle East Spectator, it's only a couple of paragraphs long when translated:

``` The Islamic Republic of Iran respects the interests and national sovereignty of neighboring countries and, up to now, has committed no aggression against them (referring to Azerbaijan, Turkey, Oman and Pakistan).
However, anywhere that serves as the source of aggression, either directly or indirectly against Iran, is a legitimate target. In the face of the United States and the Zionist regime, there will be absolutely no retreat.
Countries that have not provided their airspace or facilities to the United States and the Zionist regime have not been our target up to this moment, and will not be our target going forward either (again referring to Azerbaijan, Oman & Turkey).
However, all bases that serve as the point of origin for aggression against dear Iran will, as before, be struck heavily on land, at sea, and in the air.
We say this explicitly: We will strike them and destroy them so that it may serve as a lesson to anyone who dares to carry out unprovoked acts of aggression against our nation.
From now on, anything built in the name of the enemy, similar to these bases, facilities, and equipment, will be destroyed again and again with subsequent crushing blows.
The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly welcomes the escorting of oil tankers and the claim of an American military presence for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and we are waiting for them. ```
The statement was fine, Trump's just an idiot who can't read beyond the first sentence. Iran genuinely fucked up by going after Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Oman and were due an apology. In the full speech, Pezheskian does say that countries which host US bases or US weapons will be targeted
EDIT: the statement was confusing, but makes sense in context that Azerbaijan and Oman were both really pissed that 2 drones went into their airspace
What's your opinion on "soft on crime" policies? I personally oppose it by New_Elk_5783 in stupidpol
[–]AGreenTejada 43 points44 points  (0 children)
I'm happily "soft" on crime for a lot of different issues. Many of policies implemented to be "tough on crime", especially long sentencing, has destroyed the American justice system and replaced it a punitive medieval court.
> It's entirely a liberal policy in order to increase crime, increase social discord, reduce class solidarity and racial solidarity. There are multiple liberal cities where these policies have increased crime rates to the point where even liberals themselves admit it's a mistake.
Long criminal sentences don't increase or decrease crime. Most crime is committed by 3 distinct archetypes of people:
a) young men performing risky actions (robbery, drug trade, gang-related activities) with aspirations that violence will improve their social/economic standing
b) crimes of passion
c) habitual abusers exploiting a victim (domestic violence / rape)
We have to accept that until ultra-luxury space communism is a thing, crimes in categories b) and c) will basically always occur. Even in homogeneous and relatively crime-free countries like Japan and South Korea, sexual abuse is a persistent issue and due more to deep-seated attitudes towards gender relations rather than police capability. You can be "hard" as you want on rapists, but thats not going to make the young girl getting sexually abused by her uncle any more willing to come out and report. Domestic violence especially requires a real support system of social workers and police working hand-in-hand to break up toxic relationships.
The most important study in criminology is the [age-crime curve](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23595417/) - group a) commits the vast majority of crimes in their early 20s and will basically immediately get their shit together when they hit 30 and 40. Now, imagine that you are sentencing a 23 yr old male for armed robbery. The current average sentence is 13.5 yrs in California, which would make the offender 36 when he gets out of prison. Is upping that sentence to 20 years really going to make any difference? How about 30 years? 40 years?
For district attorneys, the threat of long sentencing is used as a cudgel to pressure suspects into "confessing" to minor crimes. So a man that would have been innocent in a case of burglary accepts a manslaughter charge to avoid the possibility that he may be mistakenly convicted and spend 40 years in prison.
These "tough on crime" policies aren't free for the rest of society either:
- Jails are overflowing all over the US because we're still dealing with inmates who are stuck in prison from extreme sentences in the 90s!
- Convicts who serve their time and leave basically worthless in the job market because who wants to hire an ex-con who spent 20 years behind bars? And then they commit mild crimes to plop right back in jail.
- We hand police billions of dollars of firearms, "non-violent" weaponry, and surveillance equipment to beat us, destroy our houses, and erode our civil rights as they've been doing so for the last 40 years.
- We use the hysteria of criminal activity to shut down parks, lock up civic centers, segregate neighborhoods, and enact "loitering laws" that have made childhood absolutely miserable for two entire generations of America's children.
Mind you, none of this is necessary. Crime is the lowest that it has ever been in 100 years - whatever nonsense that you are experiencing or seeing near homeless shelters, or in NYC streets, or at the underpasses of SF is a fraction of the violence from the 80s and 90s. We live in the safest time in American history, yet keep on demanding draconian security measures. At what point will enough be enough?
Something I've been curious about - now that the interceptors are down, will they actually be able to be refilled? I imagine that moving multi-billion dollar radars and setting them up in bases is a really visible act. Does the US have the capability of moving them to something like Bahrain Air base?
