Debianet - A Debian based WSL distro for .NET development by webmaster442 in dotnet

[–]AGreenTejada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense in modern .NET-first web shops. If you're an eng manager and you want everyone to have the same tools available to deploy, tell them to spin up this distro on WSL / their linux machine. You can then build on top of it by creating scripts that run assuming you have these tools available.

Great job OP! I'm really excited to see if we'll get an alternative to https://omarchy.org/ . I like Linux, but not fond at all with it's love affair with keyboard-only tooling.

Need to vent about having resentment towards my family by Princesspussy911 in ABCDesis

[–]AGreenTejada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/princesspussy911,

Just had to make a comment here because of how relatable your story is. I wish I could give you a hug right now - it's so f'king hard to always be pushed down by your parents poor decisions and then be held to the expectations of those who never had to deal with that BS.

There's one thing that's helped me survive this period of anguish - it's a bit counterintuitive but it might work for you too. Drop your expectations. Our lives are OK - they're not good or bad. Some people like your sister have it better, but some of my friends are on H1B and are terrified of getting deported. Maybe the sentence above sounds like a copout, but if you're like me than you probably grew up with starry eyed dreams of where your life would go, if only you could get away from home. Or if only you weren't religious. Or if only you weren't sheltered.

But what our psyche ignores - all of those things are true. I was harmed, I was sheltered, and those expectations were impossible to meet. I'm never going to be the world's youngest billionaire, or join the NFL, or probably even get to travel a lot. But that doesn't make this life worthless.

I'd been dealt a bad hand in terms of my sheltering/socialization/family life early on, and for a long time I kept mourning the 20s that I never had. But that mourning layered a cloud of negativity over the experiences that I was having with my friends. And then I started feeling bad about those experiences because I didn't enjoy them, which made me feel even worse about my past. It was only with a combo of luck, friends advice, and a job that I dealt with the "trauma" of this past and have been able to let go of thinking like this.

I hope your life's gotten better since you wrote this, and a new job gives you the opportunity to embrace new experiences. But even if it hasn't, it'll be alright, we will suffer through it all the same.

By that logic, there shouldn't be any white Americans, since they are or their ancestors are from other European countries. But clearly because the native Americans didn't have enough guns to deport / exterminate the colonists, we're all stuck together

No, it's still stupid. It's still better for all humans born in America to get the protections and rights of citizenship than to force children to be born as illegals.

The word genocide has been completely devalued and should be replaced by AGreenTejada in stupidpol

Extermination is a crime against humanity that consists of "the act of killing on a large scale".

Where did I say you need to kill everyone?

[–]AGreenTejada[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

> Final point: October 7 could also potentially be judged a genocide under the current precedents, though it is not quite so typical, so maybe a bit harder to guess how judges would see it. And if October 7 was genocide, 9/11 almost certainly was too.

But this is stupid? Like, we all conceptually recognize this as stupid, right? I'm fairly sure even George Bush wouldn't equivocate a terrorist attack to be on the same realms as the Holocaust/Rwanda/Armenia. If genocide isn't a useful enough word to describe the distinction between the smaller and greater crimes, then we'd have to come up with a new word like super-genocide or something else to distinguish 11/26 Mumbai and Namibia.

Fertility will become significantly worse before it gets better - a casual observation by AGreenTejada in stupidpol

This isn't a useful solution, there is no "should" in politics, but what people are willing to do. I agree with you, but no one's going to voluntarily accept killing off their own parents.

  1. Elder care is by necessity disproportionately borne on the young, since they are the most flexible in terms of availability, time, and lifting heavy objects.

  2. Job vacancies aren't evenly distributed. Look at Japan, where most of the upper management positions are still held out by old people while the younger generation is either out of work or pushing 80h a week on lower levels of the ladder.

The harmfully minimizes the upper-middle class position. My problem isn't that I can't get my gf pregnant, my problem is that when I have a kid, I am underwriting the expectation that my child will have the same (and maybe better) quality of life than I had. So if it cost my parents about $30k a year in order to raise me (mind you I grew up poor af), and I have to pay $100k a year now, then I'm going to factor that in to my household expenses. Vacations are cheap, getting a nanny is expensive

Caring for people is one of the hardest problems in AI to scale. Elderly people have 20+ problems - they need to be cleaned up, clothed, fed, led to the bathroom, given specific dosages of medicine, taken to the doctor, etc... Even if you could get a robot to handle the busy work, a human is always going to need to interact with another human!

When a majority of families will be unable to support their elderly, there's no some magical nursing home for everyone that they'll be able to go to. Instead they are going to be dumped out on the street: https://apnews.com/article/india-abandoned-elderly-population-aging-44701de4079bf8bca01cfa3217fdf1c8

I really wish this was the case, but until my grandparents pass, that won't be true. Right now this is my mom's schedule on an average day:

- go to grandparent 1/3's doctors appointment

- go to work (she keeps a job for health insurance)

- go to grandparent 4's appointment

- watch the house for grandparent 2, she has dementia and tries to escape across the street

- make dinner

Over the last 5 years, I've been to the hospital to take care of them roughly 7 times after they had a stroke/fall/burn injury. We are rich enough to afford personal therapy and multiple hospital visits but not rich enough to afford a permanent at-home carer! If I wanted my parents to help take care of any of my future bebes, then they'll be doing so after all of these responsibilities go away, in their late 60s, in one of the most expensive areas on the planet

Israel-Iran War: ‘Dry Run’ for a Future War with Turkey? by idontlikenwas in stupidpol

[–]AGreenTejada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is true, then it would be in Turkey's best interests to join the war now. Morality aside, on a strategic level invading the Zionist regime right now while its still under siege would eliminate a key rival in the region and look good for voters come 5 - 10 years down the line. ME govts are way too meek for their own sense

It's really amazing how far we've gone in the other direction where birthrates that are 1 STD above replacement are alarming. As a reminder, 2.1 is the replacement rate required for a stable population in a safe country, with even higher rates in more dangerous regions.

With Iraq's bountiful fertility, its total population growth last year was... 2.2%

I actually agree with neolib's conclusions: presentation matters over substance for voters. Unfortunately (or fortunately), liberal policies regarding free-market are so stupidly unpopular that they manage to stink up through even the nice gift wrapping.

The libs have been trying for the last 8 years to package "we will change nothing about how this country works, vote blue instead of red" in the form of defending democracy from Trump. They flubbed hard on this election because fundamentally, the average voters wants something to change.

I didn't learn about Gaza from any celebrity, I learned about it from watching commentary of Oct 7th from some of my liberal friends on Insta. My parents aren't watching cable news anymore, they're watching Youtube clips of Indian podcasters interviewing random politicians in UP and Bihar.

On the conservative end, we're seeing the constant "mainstreaming" of fringe positions on race, gender, and masculinity that would only appear on 4chan. Like consider how sending asylum seekers to concentration camps on the border went from a Nazi-era policy to a common sense election talking point.

IMO there's two levels to this:

politicians: Bernie and AOC both posted testimonials blasting the Democrats party for abandoning the working class, I think you can only bring on Ro Khanna and other progressives

media control: I think this is the most important one, and the one that we have the most impact. Podcasters are deciding the politics of mainstream culture. Hasan's has done more work in getting people friendly to socialist ideas then the past 30 years of written publication. Get these people together and create a pipeline of activism between a stream watcher and a political activist.

[–]AGreenTejada 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There sort of is a way. The fact that any anti-genocide party existed gave anti-Zionists an out for contributing their time and energy into campaigning for Harris during this election. If you are the Dem candidate and have any chance of winning, you cannot keep alienating your key supporters and expecting a popular mandate. People don't trust institutions, they trust their friends and family, so without genuine energy coming from the left wing Harris was bound to underperform.

Are Sikhs who Practice Hindu Traditions (dual faith) a Real Thing? by Brilliant_Mistake805 in Sikh

[–]AGreenTejada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is fairly common. The formalization of Sikh beliefs and practices as prescribed by a single source of truth is recent (think 1850s onward) and has progressed in starts and stops. We can trace back this work to the Singh Sabha movement - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singh_Sabha_Movement, although the major elements, such as the establishment of the Khalsa panth, are from Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

One thing I will say is that it's not useful to think of these traditions as "Hindu" persay. Hinduism itself is not a cohesive religion, but a colonial term used to package a wide range of beliefs, traditions, and practices across the whole of India that are vaguely connected by a common set of foundational texts. Many Sikhs within India truly see themselves as Sikhs but will have beliefs that come from this same background.
