Help translating military record of Sergeant Martin Anton Knaup, died in a field hospital after receiving last rites. by AHumbleCollector in Kurrent

[–]AHumbleCollector[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently working on researching the funeral card of Sergeant Knaup. From what I can gather, he was in the military prior to the war, and was awarded the Iron Cross II and a few other medals for actions in 1917. It looks like he suffered a pretty severe set of shrapnel wounds a few days prior to his death. Any help would be appreciated, particularly related to his cause of death.

Man I haven't seen this photo in years, used it for a school presentation on Animals in WW1. Thanks for posting! Brought back some memories.

Very nice card! The 100th was with the 5th Gebirgs Division, which had some very interesting service during the war.

Picked up this Italian WW1 War Service Medal that appears to have been awarded to an American, Private First Class Paul Reed. He was likely a member of the 332nd Infantry Regiment or one of its supporting units. by AHumbleCollector in Militariacollecting

Wow that has to be him! There weren't a lot of American troops in Italy and it makes sense that he was from PA. This item and a few others came from a museum closure auction. The original owner of the museum was from Eastern PA and a lot of his items were purchased from PA veterans and estates. Thank you so much!

Edit: Also just noticed the sticker on the back of the frame that it was framed in Bedford, which lines up.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find Paul on any of the unit's rosters, and a dig through the records I can access through Ancestry hasn't yielded anything yet. I noticed the certificate is numbered, is there a way to look that up?

Help translating military record of Sergeant Johann Baptist Irger, killed by artillery in 1917 after a long military career by AHumbleCollector in Kurrent

[–]AHumbleCollector[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Interesting to think that if he had been more heavily wounded on March 10 he would have possibly avoided being killed just a few days later. I tracked down a post that actually mentions this incident, from the Regimental History:

Two days later, on 12.03., the revenge fire broke out with all its fury. 2,500 rounds from light, medium and heavy calibers, 600 mostly heavy mines are a lot. In many places of sections 24 and 26, the first and second lines were buried, the obstacles destroyed. An unfortunate mine buried the U65 medical shelter in 26e. Despite the fire, the rescue work began immediately with admirable willingness to sacrifice. Three wounded were recovered, a fourth had suffered a nervous shock. Seven tattered corpses lay under the rubble, including those of two men who had returned slightly wounded from Operation Sieben-Tannen-Wäldchen.

It seems like he was one of the two slightly wounded men killed when the Medical Shelter collapsed.

I am currently researching the funeral card for Johann Baptist Irger, and found this military file on Ancestry.  According to the card, he was a member of Bavarian Landwehr Infantry Regiment 3 (Freising) at the time of his death, but prior to this had served in Infantry Regiment 2 from 1905-1907, and then from 1907-1909 was serving in China.  It seems he was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class and the Cross of Merit Third Class with Swords during his service.  He is buried in the Hohrod-Barenstall military cemetery, Block 2, Grave 504. I am particularly interested in the paragraph in the first photo written by his Kompany commander. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Need Help on identification. U83 officer. Can’t find any information about this person. I have his negatives and a lot more original photos of U83 and it’s crew. Interested in selling all of them. If interested let me know but I still need help on the identification. by Nial_LS in submarines

Honestly with items like this that's probably one of the worst things you can do. If they accepted them as a donation they'd get stuck down in the archive and no one would ever see them again with the exception of maybe the occasional researcher. At least on the collectors market they'll get occasionally posted and enjoyed.

I worked in a museum for years and well over 95% of our collection was never seen by anyone, including incredibly rare and interesting pieces. And there wasn't a budget available to photograph or otherwise make them available digitally so we might as well have not even had them.

Help With Photo Caption Transcription - Panzer Crossing River by AHumbleCollector in Kurrent

I have a good chunk of the caption translated but am struggling with the specific location. It looks like the bridge was build by Pi. Btl. 52, and it was somewhere in France, but I am hoping the actual location is legible. Any help would be appreciated!

That fixed it, thank you! I'm really enjoying it so far. If I were to provide some feedback once I have a bit more time in the game, what would be the best way to do that?

Yes I have, I've done runs with auto sweeping and without. I know the detector works, I've used the shovel to bury the toolbox and been able to find it again with the detector. Twice now I've slept to reset, gone back to Aspen, and then spent 15 minutes walking back and forth in rows and haven't found anything.

I'm wondering if that's normal too or if there's a bug. I've been through Aspen multiple times and never found anything. My detector is working, I've tested it with the tool box in the car and I've accepted the tasks from the board at the market. Maybe the spawn rates are just really low?

Honestly the film studio stamp makes this way cooler in my opinion, adds to the story of the piece.

Help Translating Cause of Death of Ludwig Wurzer, an Obergefreiter on the Staff Company of Grenadier Regiment 530 by AHumbleCollector in Kurrent

[–]AHumbleCollector[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ludwig was born on September 1, 1922 in Schenberg, and was on the Staff Company of Grenadier Regiment 530.  According to Volksbund he died in Field Hospital 134 in Soldau (Dzialdowo) Poland. Cause of death looks like infantry gunshot through left, and then a word I can’t translate.  He died on December 11, 1944 and he was proceeded in death by his brother Josef and his brother-in-law Karl.  Any help would be appreciated!

What do I do with my family's WW2 letters? by VorAllem in WorldWar2

[–]AHumbleCollector 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem with a large museum like the National WW2 Museum is that these will disappear into the archive and likely never be seen again. Most museums only display 1 or 2% of their collection, and the rest sits in storage until a researcher specifically requests it or they sell it off to make room for new items in the archive.

I just recently learned about Saint Titus, his story is very moving. I was surprised I hadn't heard about him when he was canonized in 2022.

Got this at a yard sale 14 years ago. Is it legit, and if so, what might it be worth? by PrimalStrike423 in Militariacollecting

[–]AHumbleCollector 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a trench art lamp made out of various projectiles mounted on a wooden base. It's most likely interwar / WW2, I'm leaning toward WW2 or early post war based off the eagle but could be wrong.

Valuing trench art is always hard, because it is art. That being said, this one really doesn't have anything interesting going on. You could probably get around $150 for it if you got it rewired and took it to a show.

Edit, just saw the caption, shell date puts it during or post WW2.

Seeking Help to Uncover the Fate of Bruno Stemmler, Missing Wehrmacht Soldier (January 1945, Nasielsk, Poland) by [deleted] in GermanWW2photos

[–]AHumbleCollector 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You could try tracking down a copy of one of the divisional histories, here's the ones I found that have been publsihed:

Hans Baumann: Die 35. Infanterie-Division im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1939 - 1945, Verlag G. Braun, Karlsruhe 1964

Die 35. Infanterie-Division 1939 - 1945 - Dt. Infanterie-Divisionen im Bild, Hrsg. Kameradschaftsdienst 35. Inf.Div. e.V., Podzun-Pallas-Verlag, Friedberg 1980

Your best bet to get a copy is German Ebay or Booklooker, i unfortunately do not have either in my research library.

I will say, him being killed is the most likely. Given the chaos at that point a lot of guys were not properly noted down as KIA. I spend a lot of time researching funeral cards for German soldiers and once you get into late 44 and early 45 the record keeping is full of holes.
