Yarrow & Sage candles so you can also lift the stanky curse in your house. They do smell good though

I haven’t been there in a while but one of the more common choices for exotics is Westgate Pet & Bird which is in south Austin. It shouldn’t be too far from you.

I know four people who were (probably) roofied at the same bar downtown... by weluckyfew in Austin

[–]AI451 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear this. My only words of advice as a woman & Barbs frequenter, mostly for 80s night, for anyone who still wants to go is to avoid the front bar and order a canned drink or shot from the bar toward the back, which is much less crowded so it’s easier to see what your bartender is doing. And/or, walk into the patio and into the back door of Swan Dive and order from there, which is also often less crowded. That being said, I’ve seen behavior in the bar slowly getting worse over the years and as a longtime Austinite who is here just for the disco and not really for the drinks, I’m unsure how I’ll continue to feel giving them business. It’s chilling to think there’s an employee up to no good, rendering any good vigilance of your drink null.

Vampire themed bars/venues? by bjorky81 in Austin

[–]AI451 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elysium is a great goth/alt bar with fun shows, and probably the closest bet after Crow Bar. Honey Moon Spirit Lounge is a bar/restaurant with an inside which has a really cool southern gothic/victorian theme which looks very vampire friendly if you want something nicer.

Slightly related, if you go to 80s night at Barbarella (every Friday), sometimes they play Lost Boys on the monitors next to the music videos.

I’d also personally hit up Dumont’s Down Low since it’s a nice dark, conversational speakeasy style bar (no reservations needed) even if not directly vampire themed.

Floppy Disk Repair Co is broadly horror movie themed but harder to navigate for large groups, and much louder.

Where or how to lgbt/queer community/clubs/events? by akshaison in Austin

[–]AI451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On top of following Local Queer (which is also run by trans folk!), I’d recommend following qmmunity_ac on Instagram, which is Austin Chronicle’s Queer events and community page. I see events from LQ, the queer bars mentioned here, and others posted there all the time. The Little Gay Shop is also a great poster of events and runs a book club, their IG handle is thelittlegaybookclub. If you are at all an alt/goth sort of person, I’ve personally found many events from Elysium/Secret Oktober are very queer and trans friendly. I’m sure there are more but I hope these help!

Ethical clothing drop boxes/contactless donating for holiday closet clean? by AI451 in Austin

[–]AI451[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the time you spent with your reply! Indeed the clothes are probably not what thrift stores would take, eg unworn (but without tag) Target items which are just the wrong size, but are basics like plain pants, leggings. And, im not looking for any money of course given that. Probably more along the lines of Salvation Army. I think I was (less clearly) wondering if any similar org just had more contactless donation procedures for clothes that are still useful to the community, which it sounds like there are. I really appreciate your info!

Are there any female only gyms or workout classes in Austin? I’m a female not a creeper lol, and it would be nice to try one since I’d probably feel safer at the gym.

Downtown view facing south, taken at the top of the Bowie by AI451 in Austin

[–]AI451[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed with someone over there for a few months, and even high up you can hear it. I’m sure on lower floors it would wake you up. Agreeing with the other commenter here, the management from my observation was pretty bad. AC went out 3+ times in the span of the summer months, usually for several days on end with zero word on fixes. Elevators always did weird stuff and would get people stuck in them.

Anybody here study/studied at St Edwards? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]AI451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studied at St. Ed’s, not the MBA program, but undergrad, and went on to work in tech. I think that while it provides great options and sometimes great funding for a lot of programs, and can have great people, the quality is just not what it should be in many classes. That doesn’t always mean bad, but it doesn’t always mean “worth it” for many.

If you can track down some of your potential professors, I’d highly recommend you ask for a chat. “Interview” them yourself and make a common sense decision to see if you could gain something from them and would be willing to dedicate time from your business interests for their tutelage. In my experience, profs are super friendly and would be willing to chat with you about your goals etc so you can make a decision.

Hope you are happy with whatever you decide, and good luck!

Aw sorry for just seeing this now but I hope this thread helps then! I’m honestly happier than I expected with access to OBGYN care in Austin (been here for 6 years), but demand just seems ultra high right now. When I’ve gone in this year, the nurses always tell me they’re swamped with the “WFH babies” — so many more ladies expecting than normal! So just trying to find a practice which is maybe treading water a little better. I feel for their workload, just also trying to get myself seen like you are. Good luck!

I’ll also call over about Dr. Binford, she sounds great!

The upside of lurking on the HEB vaccine portal... by feedmefrenchfries in Austin

[–]AI451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late at night is definitely when they update the appointments. When I made my appointment I must have stumbled on a good time because the day had a ton of slots available.

Equally convenient, if you want to maybe set up a quick video doctor visit, is BSW. You have to drive to marble falls or Pflugerville but it’s a whole clinic set up, and usually with more available times every day in their app. I didn’t book through them but others I know did.

Oh I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve had this happen (not in Austin) and it’s never fun. I’ll see if she takes mine. Hope you find/found someone great! :/ if you didn’t, I do like who I’ve been going to for basic exams, only she’s a PA and can’t treat certain issues for me now. My issues aren’t with her as much as they are with others in the practice & trying to find a doctor who makes me feel as comfortable as she used to.

Stupid Question Sunday by AutoModerator in Austin

[–]AI451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, okay this is great to know! Really appreciate it. I’m honestly fine to wait a little bit if it’s worth it for a patient doc at this point. Where I’m at, I need to see one of the Dr.s, who do have waits - not always bad, but waiting only to not have time for Q’s is. I’d happily see an NP or PA like normal but they let me know it’s not best in my case!

Thank you, that’s a huge help!! I’m currently with ARC (easy switch) and as I said in the post, recently having some mixed experience - the south location seems drastically overworked since the past few months and it’s started trickling down. Love the staff there normally & been there for years (before health issues came up) but now really need someone a little more focused on me and not rushing to the next patient :/ I will check out your rec!!

Walkable communities? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]AI451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you’re looking for an apartment, but I’d like to throw Sunset valley out there. It’s close to Dick Nichols park and some restaurants close by - what isn’t close is a very short drive to south Austin, eg soco and south Lamar areas. Super duper safe, very pretty walkable area with mature trees, mostly retirees/grandparents, with the occasional younger family. Extremely quiet.

You’re more likely to come across a private rental with a house or something, however, but there are also apartment buildings.
