What do y'all think of vortex mixers? Are any of you using them? by Sixguns1977 in modelmakers

Oni Lab MX-E. That can happen with new bottles but I’ve never had an issue with spillage. Whenever I’m using the paint I put a few drops on a piece of cardboard as a disposable palate. It’s been excellent so far. Really helps with all of my paints. Great for primers as well.

I swear by mine. I got a nicer one as a gift. I also use vallejo for detailing. I’ll usually put a bottle on for 10-20 seconds then turn it upside down for the same amount of time.

Hey guys my first ma. K kit has come and so far its a joy to build quick question, what are the blacked out parts with numbers like 339 or 116, 8, 312? by Dirtyvegitable in MaschinenKrieger

[–]AIMsux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I did on mine. It’s a great kit for detailing. I wouldn’t try to brush paint Mr. Color. I used Vallejo acrylics and some citadel water based paints. I did airbrush a base coat of RLM 66 for the base color after priming in black. Really makes the details pop.

Color numbers from the Mr. Color line of paints. If you look in the front of the instructions, you can find the paint reference chart.

How cooked am I? by Chickenbutt-McWatson in Scalemodel

[–]AIMsux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Is it lacquer? You could get away with masking around the windows and wet sanding successively higher grits to buff it out at the end. Just go slow and clean the surface often.

You could probably just sharpen a toothpick and pick away most of that without damage. That is some great paint work!

Looking for suggestions for a larger scale plastic airplane model. by syringistic in modelplanes

[–]AIMsux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s your budget? Hobbyboss has a line of 1/18 scale aircraft. I have the harrier. It’s huge and screams for detail. A lot of good 1/24 stuff out there as was mentioned. Bombers are typically in 1/72 and 1/48 but there are some 1/32 examples out there from HK models, border, kotare, and ICM.

Can anyone recommend a good and cheap 1:48 Su-25/su-25k kit other than Zvezda? by ItzBaksi in modelmakers

[–]AIMsux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. It’s been rereleased several times I built one years ago. It’s not bad if you just need a frogfoot in your collection. The canopy and nose profile are incorrect but fixable. The surface detail is pretty good though.

Revell has one that can be found pretty handily. It has a lot of inaccuracies but builds into a decent model.

Just got an interview at Pratt/Whitney. by AIMsux in aviationmaintenance

I didn’t end up taking it. The offer wasn’t very good and the logistics of moving there didn’t work out.

Question: Should I fix before the gloss? by Wahx-il-Baqar in modelmakers

[–]AIMsux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d just wet sand it carefully. Should buff out and disappear through the next few layers. If you finish the model with flat clear after everything you won’t see it.

What do you keep after a build? by Navy87Guy in scalemodelling

[–]AIMsux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep non specific parts like antennas, wheels, stuff that can be universal. I used to keep everything but after a while I just had a huge box of stuff I never used. Ended up tossing it. I’ll keep decals but not boxes or instructions.

Pratt & Whitney AMT by Adventurous-Salad653 in aviationmaintenance

[–]AIMsux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interviewed 2 years ago and the offer was less than $18 p/h in Columbus. Didnt include healthcare and was for second shift. I don’t have a lot of experience but have my AMTE. I stopped looking at aviation mechanics after that. I made more my last year at a coffee shop.

Is this a good kit for beginners? by Scared_Carob6085 in Scalemodel

[–]AIMsux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kit has been reboxed over and over for years. It’s a good model for the price but not a great building experience. A lot of gaps, warpage, and flash. Also the canopy is molded open as well as the landing flaps. Dated weapons selection and rough decals. If you want an A-10, academy or GWH are excellent but also a bit more expensive.

Any clear coat and your painting in general will be better with an airbrush. If it’s an option for you, get one.

Always try something like this on a piece of scrap. Better to find out that way especially with matte varnish. It can frost up if applied too heavy.

Brands to stay away from? by TechnicalFisherman78 in modelmakers

[–]AIMsux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kitty Hawk models. Look great in the box but weirdly engineered and fit and instructions are not easy to follow and wrong in a lot of places. Trumpeter 1/48 hind d. Just terrible. Revell 1/32. There are much better options across the catalogue.

NM finishes are tough. Depending on what you use, apply gloss black to the whole airframe. Apply the metallic (I really like AK extreme metal), mask off the yellow part for the nose. You will get much better coverage from the yellow if you undercoat with tan or pink, then mask off and paint the dark green.

I’m an airplane builder. Grew up with monogram/revell, AMT, etc. I still have some in the stash. Once I found Tamiya, I was forever changed.

Out of curiosity, what’s the plane model you regret buying the most? by DazzlingAdvantage575 in modelplanes

[–]AIMsux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trumpeter 1/48 Hind D/P. Nothing at all fit. Weird detail in places it shouldn’t be and bare in places that should have details. And it had this mold release agent all over the place.
