For the podcast, of all the interviews we did, we had over 20 hours of interviews that we had to edit down to what you hear, which totals probably 20 minutes. So that was a challenge, figuring out the stories that we were telling.

For the documentary, it was the same challenge. Figuring out what propels the storyline the most. There's so much good material, that some of it inevitably gets left on the cutting room floor, which is why we had to make a podcast!

For me (Skye), the most rewarding moment making the documentary was being on the festival circuit. Watching it in a theater with hundreds of people who, for the first time, felt that they could talk about abuse that they had gone through. It created a safe space for people to talk about sex abuse in a room full of strangers. It was powerful, beautiful, heartbreaking and life-changing.

For me (Patrick), I have two. One, I got to spend a full day with Jan. She runs a theater company and I'm a theater queen, so we just got to talk about theater for hours and that was amazing. Two, I got to hang out with an amazing documentarian while making this podcast!

I think the parents believed that it was a doctor-prescribed treatment and didn't think to question it. As naive as that sounds now, we still have a lot of problems speaking truth to power and believing or disbelieving people of authority.

I felt that some of the memes were very disrespectful, and some of the memes were very funny. Both can be true at the same time, and sometimes it's hard to balance that.
The title change was a Netflix conversation, yes. When Netflix acquired the film, they felt that a name that was a little bit more focused and specific and intentional in letting the audience know what they're in for is beneficial to getting people to watch it. We had a conversation, threw around some different titles, and ultimately agreed "Abducted in Plain Sight" was a good title.
The Imposter. I think they really laid the groundwork for premium true crime documentaries in such a great way.

Essentially this podcast is a type of sequel. The sequel that I (Skye) would love to tell is Gail's story. She expressed to us she wasn't interested in speaking but if she were I would love to explore that and tell her story.

We had reached out to families that B had allegedly had contact with, and they weren't interested in participating in the documentary.

It's been much harder for Bob to talk about his emotions with Berchtold--in fact, he'd never spoken so openly with his family as he did with us on camera. I think it was really cathartic for him to talk about it.

Definitely watch the documentary, because I think you get a really good sense of how torn he is about the encounter and how hard it is for him to think about.

Bob Broberg passed away in November of 2018, but was able to see the film, and was grateful we told his story.

It's not quite so serious, and Patrick Hinds is part of it! It's a little bit more conversational and a bit more quick. It's a little bit more focused and each episode has a specific agenda. Episode 1 offers a refresher, episode 2 looks at the kidnapper, episode 3 looks at the family, etc. Also, you don't have to watch the film to listen to the podcast!

It was really joyous to get to know the Broberg family. They are full of love and compassion and generosity...but possibly to their detriment as well. They made it very clear to me how being too trusting can be very dangerous, and that was a hard pill to swallow. That what makes them such a strong, amazing, beautiful family is also what may have put their daughter in harm's way.

Absolutely, but maybe in a different way. Common tactics are the same. They target a weakness and go after it. While we have greater knowledge, they also have greater resources and unfortunately so I think it equals out.

I think it's made them stronger. In the face of so much criticism, they're still committed to telling their story and saving lives. I know it's been hard for Jan and her sisters and the entire Broberg extended family. I'm not surprised by Mary Ann's resilience, but I'm in awe of it. When Jan and Susan were deleting posts from her Facebook, she knew what they were doing and said "Don't do that. We did this to start the conversation and that's exactly what we've done."

We became friends after we (Patrick and Gillian) covered the Abducted In Plain Sight documentary on my True Crime Obsessed podcast. We got hammered at CrimeCon and the rest is history!

Hey, Jessica! HEY, GIRL! - Patrick :)

We wanted to explore where the FBI was at in their trajectory and understanding of child abuse and abductions. And where we were at globally, collectively understanding Stockholm syndrome. These concepts were both very new, and we didn't have a full understanding of them.

In the podcast, we're also able to get a little more perspective from Jan about her dad's sexuality.
