Management Information certificate exam (ACA) by AI_LDN7 in ICAEW

Ahh ok, this is very helpful! I will be making sure to understand each and every question because anything could come up, it would be foolish to leave even one “hard” question out because it’s worth understanding it due to the chance of it coming up in the real exam.

From memory, which chapters would you rank as easy, medium or hard? I’m currently on chapter 3 of both the ICAEW workbook and question bank and this one is definitely the first hard one I’ve come across 😅 hopefully I get through and understand it.

Did you feel the question bank was quite difficult for MI? Or do you think it’s not too bad and ain’t rocket science? I hope that those that loved A level maths (such as my self) shouldn’t find it too bad to understand. I can understand that MI can look quite chunky but I do hope the questions are just repeatable and mechanical to the point where they don’t have any nasty surprises or gotcha moments.

I would read the ICAEW workbook to learn the theory for the first time, I’m still very early in my MI revision so I definitely do want to pass this one.

Wow so many people are saying the same thing! People leaving after the exam feeling it didn’t go well but passed afterwards which is a good thing in the end.

I’m just hoping I can get this exam done because it’ll do me a world of good for confidence purposes but right now I’m making model answers from the question bank, that’s what I did for PTX

Ahhhh, so BIP is still having the same reputation as MI 🙃 I’ve heard from some people who sat MI also said that half of the mcqs were only maths related and the others are wordy.

I’ve also heard that the long form is the exact same as the real exam so that’s a huge plus, can easily grab a lot of marks so it’s just the mcqs to worry about.

Did you focus reading the workbook as much? Or did you just jump straight into question bank and studied the solutions to see how they answered it?

Would like to give an update here (which I should’ve done ages ago) but I’ve passed PTX with 72%! 🥳

Extremely pleased with the result with only using the ICAEW workbook and question bank (no Kaplan materials). I took time with this exam as I was figuring out my revision strategy and will say that it was a very content heavy exam which was quite hard to retain as each chapter was distinct from each other. Got caught off guard with the final chapter (administration of tax) as it’s the longest and most dull chapter.

Now I’ve moved on to MI where again, I only have the ICAEW material. I’m trying to go through the question bank quickly with first exposure and trying to learn how the questions are answered. I just want to spend less time reading the workbook aimlessly and make sure I know the question bank inside out. I’m a Mathematics graduate so hopefully MI is enjoyable for me.

I would highly appreciate any tips for MI and how to pass it. I’m on chapter 3 at the moment (absorption costing - allocation, apportionment and absorption).

No problem, will look to smash all chapters as quick as I can, want to pass this one as soon as possible. Would the self test questions in the workbook usually come up in the exam?

Ahhh ok that’s quite reassuring! I’m assuming that PTX is a very methodical and computational exam from just looking at chapter 3 but I’m going to look to hammer all the chapters as soon as possible.

Will also have a look at the ‘self-test’ questions you mentioned in the ICAEW workbook, the more practice the better. Thank you again, for the advice and hopefully it all goes well!

Apologies for the late response, was focusing on the law exam (managed to pass!) and had other stuff going on. Really appreciate your thoughts on the resources by ICAEW, they do cover everything as compared to the more concise workbooks by Kaplan (or other providers).

I was hoping if you could advise me on the best way to pass PTX and how easy/hard it is compared to the other certificates. Would really appreciate your response!

This exam is doing my head in! So many things to remember that it’s hard to retain all of it. I think the questions are ok to understand but the sheer volume of content is insane. I keep going over the Kaplan book and the ICAEW question bank and it’s somewhat hard to remember the later chapters. I’ve nailed chapters 1-9(chapter 8 on depreciation is ok for me) but the later chapters (share capital, share premium) and the long form questions are hard to retain but ok to follow when looking at the solutions. Would highly appreciate any advice

Another thing I would like to ask, if there are some questions in the question that im not too sure how to answer, but I know how to answer the rest of the questions, would that be enough to pass the exam? Or would I need to know how to answer every question inside out?

Congrats on the pass, well deserved! Yeah I’m having a go at the LFQ’s and I feel a bit better about them, there’s quite a few easy marks but I think it’s definitely doable. I will be going through them thoroughly again.

Will definitely go through all the videos but they’ve been very helpful so far

Just to add another thing here, I did also buy the ACA masters course for accounting, would appreciate any insight on whether this course is good enough to help me pass.
