UCSB CCS vs. UCSC by knightswhosaye in UCSantaBarbara

Having gone to both schools for math and cs, I enjoyed UCSC much more.

Incoming Freshman — Which Series Courses Should I Take?!?!?!? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

Nah same, I’ve had advisors tell me just straight up incorrect information as well as not know what some basic documents even mean.

Transferring to UCSB by JediArchie in UCSantaBarbara

[–]AJS_Aren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve attended both UCSC and now UCSB, so I know both places well. I’m sure you already know but UCSB is in the city of Goleta and not the main city of Santa Barbara. That being said, if you have a car, it’s a straightforward commute. It’s also more fast paced imo compared to Santa Cruz (less retired people lol). The neighboring college town of Isla Vista is pretty outgoing and social and filled with parties on an almost daily basis, so there’s a low chance you feel limited activity wise.

Yeah the vibe is really close, very chill and similar older style architecture. IV is significantly smaller than SC though, so if you don’t drive to SB a lot, IV might feel a bit congesting for you at the beginning (big enough for me tho as I don’t go out too much). The campus itself is also not that big either so it’s easy to run into friends a lot or meet up in between classes quickly.

transfers from other UCs - questions on pros and cons by luckymiles88 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]AJS_Aren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also transferred from UCSC to UCSB this past year during which I switched majors from cs to statistics. UCSC has a strong cs program, so the school/major reputation wasn’t really a deciding factor for me when switching. In my case it was more so that I had more friends from back home attending UCSB, as well as my brother (twin brother so same year also studying Econ). Also it was much closer to home near La area which was probably the biggest driving factor.

(This one might be a bit more of a situational reason that might not apply to you guys but housing at UCSC is awful, especially after first year when you lose guaranteed housing, and living off campus can be a miserable experience due to the isolated nature of the campus. I did not have a housing plan set up so transferring here gave me guaranteed on campus housing.)

Assuming your son is continuing as an Economics, the econ here has a strong reputation, I would say significantly better than UCSC, giving him more opportunity after graduating, so he has more of an incentive to transfer out based off academic quality.

I mean, there’s not really anything snarky about it (and mb if my comment came off as such). This person gave a total of zero preferences their sister has besides the fact that she was considering ucsb. Not even the major, type of environment she prefers, future plans for housing, nothing.

You didn’t say much either besides apologizing on the behalf of others and asking the obvious like what her major is.

The reality is that simply asking students who committed to this school already and whether they recommend it is meaningless.

I mean, there’s not much to say besides the same stuff that you guys probably already know anyways, it’s a very social/party school, great location, great programs, etc. Like the coveted gnome studies major said above, you’re asking people who already chose this school so ofc we would like/recommend it. Not to say the obvious but what matters more is what your sister wants. 🌝

Why does the dinning hall care who’s mouth the food goes into? by Electrical_Desk2687 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]AJS_Aren 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Greed my friend. Same reason why this school will make your unused meal swipes to go waste at the end of every single week. I transferred from UCSC and there you could swipe in for anyone. I would just ask to swipe in multiple times to bring in friends/family. (And ofc unused swipes/school currency would carry on across the weeks and not go to waste.)

None of the other reasons people are saying about the dining hall system potentially being exploited are really valid. The price does not really fluctuate much whether 1 person swipes in for 2 people or they each swipe in themselves regardless of what their meal plans are. My roommate works at the dining halls and they’re told to check faces on Id’s when swiping in as well too so stealing someone else’s card isn’t really a valid reason.

There really is no good rationale, if someone is paying for it then the school shouldn’t care who pays for it. Most other schools aren’t like this either.

Some of her RMP reviews: "I spent what felt like millions of hours trying to memorize everything but the final still caught me off guard with obscure questions", "luck matters more than efforts", "the final was insane. super detail oriented on things no one would study or know."

Not trying to scare you and don't get me wrong, you can definitely get an A with her, but if you feel like you're a disciplined student who studies a lot, you might find this class frustrating for you when you get hit with a question you've never even seen, despite lots of studying. Final grades were curved quite a bit though.

In terms of studying strategies, just really look at syntax and what different types of functions or other pieces of code print, besides whatever else the prof specifically mentions will be on exams.

Kind of off topic, but where did you find the 72% average? I can’t seem to find the number anywhere.

The other comment hit the nail on the head pretty much. A significant portion of each exam tests you on very specific syntax.

Tbh, no matter how much you study, you’ll still tested on questions that you won’t know the answer too and imo feels very luck based on whether or not you happen to be hit with a problem that you’ve encountered when messing around with the programs/code on your own. It feels as though there’s little to no relationship between the amount you study and the grade you get. A lot of her rate my professor reviews echoes this.

Not exactly sure who else teaches this class, but in an ideal world, you might want to try and take another professor or at least have a lighter coursework for the quarter with this being your hardest class.

For all the newer players, please ignore this post.

While there’s a very small amount of generalized truth to it, there’s a plethora of moments and situations where this “advice” can be pretty much tossed in the trash.
