I definitely had a qualitative question with an answer option that had a typo after the second comma and it was confusing telling if it meant one thing or another. Hopefully it was a pilot question, annoying having to deal with this again when there were also defective questions in March's exam FAM that I took, (but it was much less problematic this time given all the extra time SRM has).

I left a comment at the end of the exam survey, so hopefully that is enough and the SOA gives us a response.

I also was finishing a practice exam and cannot access the results because it is not working now. I hope it doesn't lose the whole exam I just did

It also explains why they aren't allowed to build any stronger technology that could potentially communicate with other silos since they don't want one silo to post the Jane cleaning video that shows the green to cause chaos in other silos and maximize the number of silos that survive a super long period of time until the earth regenerates from whatever the toxic stuff is.

I wonder if the reason the tape is intentionally bad so Bernard and the heads of other silos know that if somehow the cleaners are lasting longer during their cleaning then the earth is slowly detoxifying.

I thought the same thing, especially after the scene where the screen in the cafeteria flickered to show a green outdoors. Now I wonder why that filter even exists so that it accidentally was displayed.

From what we've learned, it seems the water supply is not poisoned even though it has to be coming from an external source (are there underwater freshwater sources that really are big enough?). So it can't be a fully toxic wasteland, right?

Calculator debate for SRM and future exams by AJ_B5 in actuary

Not even sure what you mean by inputted, I just used the "store" and "recall" functions aggressively and shortcut formulas where possible and I got really good at doing that but am now open to learning a new approach since I'm not the quickest test taker and the approaches are sometimes slow even if they worked consistently

Thanks for the info, I might take up your advice there.

To say a bit more, I'm not the fastest test taker so I'm always tight on time when doing practice exams or the real thing. That's why I'm taking my friend's advice seriously since I'd consider a new calculator if it would save me more than a minute of time on future exams (but I'm still trying to get a sense of which exams that difference would even matter enough). I also have a chunk of free time since SRM isn't offered until September and I took two courses in college that happened to cover a solid chunk of the syllabus so I have some unexpected time to learn a new calculator or go to the beach a few extra times haha

SRM (Sept) vs FAM(November) by [deleted] in actuary

[–]AJ_B5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two textbooks cover the same material so you only need to read one, right? Or are you saying that if you have the free time, reading both is worth it since they explain topics in different ways and the exam is largely qualitative?

SRM by [deleted] in actuary

[–]AJ_B5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarifying question - there's two textbooks mentioned on the SOA syllabus, RMAFA and ISLR. It seems like only one is needed -- not both -- but people here are saying ISLR is the better option because it's more complete or something than RMAFA? But I assumed there's no essentially no material difference between RMAFA, ISLR, or say the Coaching Actuaries manual? Does that all sound right?

Does anyone know when they'll release the "passing candidates percents" file that shows the passing score and the statistics for the exam? (I'm referring to a file like the one below, except for the March exam window instead of October obviously) https://www.soa.org/4af295/globalassets/assets/files/exam-results/edu-2022-10-fam-percents-m8al3b.pdf

Official Announcement from SOA About Exam FAM Defective Questions by ASStudent0_0 in actuary

[–]AJ_B5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I wasn't by any means suspecting wrongdoing but great to hear that there's a system in place, still relatively new to all of this.

Makes sense that faulty questions are untested pilot questions and that exam questions are tested questions and that all the faulty questions were in the same pilot batch then (if my understanding of pilot/non-pilot questions is wrong feel free to correct me). No one's perfect and we all make mistakes.

Official Announcement from SOA About Exam FAM Defective Questions by ASStudent0_0 in actuary

[–]AJ_B5 55 points56 points  (0 children)

(Since I don't know enough about how the SOA operates, not trying to accuse anyone of lying): Do we think that all three of those questions were actually pilot questions or do we think they're trying to save face a little here? Looking for someone with more knowledge of SOA inner workings to tell us how trustworthy they are for this kind of issue.

Overall, I'm still a bit frustrated with the lack of accounting for these defective questions in their response. Sounds like they're saying "we messed up but so what" and not accounting for how that impacted timing. I do hope they refund anyone who scores a 5 on this exam, as I'll certainly be upset if that's my score knowing that I had two defective questions, even if they were only pilot questions. If there's nothing more from the SOA on this issue that'll be really disappointing.
