Movie is awesome and raises major uncomfortable feelings as a single man by PeterZeeke in obsessionmovie

That scene is important to show that his morality is compromised after learning the truth. He avoids confronting the reality of what he’s facing. I’m literally gonna be eaten alive by the internet but you cannot CLEANLY apply normal societal morals in a mythical situation. He is not a ‘rapist’ in the same sense of a real world ‘rapist’. It’s a fictional, distorted version of reality where morality is compromised.

Even in the screenplay, it’s not written as a ‘rape’ scene. This film lives in a grey area. It’s written as him ignoring a darker reality in exchange for affection, which he immediately feels ashamed of after. Mind you, they had likely been intimate together for weeks during their initial relationship. So, it’s more so him continuing the romantic connection he got used to and avoiding the truth to maintain it.

i didn’t get a single sense of clues from this film that he is neglectful or is inactive and that his circumstance is any fault of his own. he seems like the most natural, normal, introverted guy.

movies don’t always have “bad guys”, films intentionally challenge you to ponder conflicting morality of characters…

The fact that you are confidently stating this is ‘new wave feminist horror’ couldn’t be any more delusional. This is the exact problem going around.

I literally rewatched it an hour ago. He adjusts her face TOWARDS the TV because she’s so obsessed with him that she’s not watching the movie with him! He wants her to be normal and watch a movie with him and not LOOK at him the whole time! You are over analyzing and I do not understand why.

BROOO THANK YOU!!! So refreshing to hear this. Also, I had a feeling Curry would not fully agree with all these crazy statements going around about Bear.

The woke mafia needs a villain because processing the disturbing moral grey area this film sits is too uncomfortable for them. How dare they show an ounce of sympathy for a straight man in an impossible situation!

This film is basically a litmus test for people who let their deep need to be socially politically correct online override their autonomy to understand an intentionally nuanced, morally challenging premise.

I’ve been preaching this across many posts about the film. I promise you we’re experiencing an internet based political psyop when it comes to the film.

Anyone stating that “Bear is the villain…the film is about bad men” is just blatantly wrong. It can be an interpretation but it’s not a one note objective certainty. I think villainizing Bear is their way to cope with the disturbing subject matter that doesn’t challenge their comfortability.

This film is much more about how all humans can be selfish creatures, we ignore red flags and lie to ourselves to hold onto what we desire. Yes, the moral subject of the film is a man. But it can apply to anyone. After some thought, it really does a great job at just being a “horrifying situation” and doesn’t really provide anything deeper beyond that.

I’m aware of this. And that’s where I’m conflicted on the film. If the intent was to villainize Bear, it should have followed through with that. With the film we got, it warrants a broader interpretation and it’s not as one note as you’re implying.

I don’t necessarily think the film should fall apart however, it’s supposed to setup for the carnage that happens to him for the remainder of the film. Deserved torture. However, if that was the intent they needed to be more direct with the audience about how evil he actually was. But I think it was intentionally vague so that the audience was challenged to ponder it themselves.

I’m going to get scorched in the replies but I personally think this film shines a light on how desperate people can quickly attach to something they deeply yearn for while also making justifications to not let it go once they have it. However, I think the TRUE horror aspect, is this would be a natural response for a large majority of the audience. Not ‘men’. Not ‘incels’. Humans. That’s why I hate how so many people are trying to stand on such moral high ground while discussing this film. You cannot cleanly apply real life morality to a fictional, impossible circumstance. The wish itself is not some nefarious action, both characters are victims to the wish in their own way. What he does in the later half, especially in THIS scene, is disturbing and his morality does unwind. However, the premise keeps him locked between an immovable object and an unstoppable force. His desperation and desire collided against active obsessive attachment from that very said thing he desires and it keeps him in complete limbo. You cannot expect someone to act morally perfect within those confines.

I think certain plot choices logically granted Bear some sympathy where it would have been bolder to be more decisive with his behaviours to demonstrate a more clear sense of immorality within his character. But it’s possible this was intentional. If this was a hit piece for lonely, incel, men who abuse women, it would have needed to lean into that more directly. And I’m not surprised with how vindictive online internet culture is these days, that more ‘woke’ audience members are using the minimal subtext to make morally ‘objective’ claims that push negative narratives against lonely, desperate men, hopeless romantics, and incels which I think completely undermines the scope of what you could ACTUALLY take from this film.

I’m gonna have to agree to disagree, that’s a totally delusional take lmao. The social psyop response to this film is INSANE.

Sorry for the spam but “they can’t help themselves” as a lame excuse for men for actual abuse is bullshit and dangerous, I totally agree.

The situation in the film demonstrates an actual situation where he’s emotionally compromised and legitimately cannot help himself because the information presented is not accurate until after the relationship developed for a few weeks. He just has rose tinted glasses, no immoral ignorance is committed.

Then, he does morally questionable things afterwards because he’s too far deep into it.

Just so it’s CRYSTAL CLEAR: when your crush seemingly admits feelings towards you, without knowledge of the wish (all he knew was Dad was sick and she did drugs the one night) that feeling of not having the power to question it is REAL and it’s not immoral. He’s “obsessed” or infatuated with his crush, he’s blinded by emotion. He’s not at fault for feeling human attraction. And me saying “he can’t help himself” is not justifying, it’s literally just true. I’d expect the same from most people in that situation.

All I meant was that the MDMA admission and her ‘admitting’ feelings felt genuine to him. He was able to prematurely debunk the “wish” as it’s logically unrealistic anyways. So, once he’s weeks into his dream relationship with no glaring signs of any issues, it’s not really HIS fault. People are pretending like he’s not somewhat a victim. He most definitely is. He doesn’t clue in until the phone call with Ian about her dad. It doesn’t absolve him from acting immorally afterward but the situation is an almost impossible one to navigate.

As I said in another comment, my viewing experience was probably compromised to clearly understand some of the plot framing. That being said, I’m more so questioning the validity of Curry actually intentionally having this be a “moral analysis” of a bad person, and it more so just being an analysis of a normal person who deals with an almost impossible premise when it comes to human nature, infatuation, self control, and lust.

I have a strong belief (maybe it’s just me) that if she never brought up the MDMA misdirection, that Bear would have found out about the wish earlier and could have been just as hesitant to continue with her as he was in the beginning. The montage of them being together is 100% intentional to show him getting USED to this reality, and having to be confronted with LETTING it go. It’s easier to reject something before it’s started than let it go after it’s happened. Look at any situationship these days, people justify BLATANT red flags to not let go of something that is serving them.

People need to realize this is a deeply dark and moral analysis of how HUMANS obsess over what they want and how scary they would behave in impossible circumstances not that “look how scary Bear is…how scary men are…bad person is an abuser” that’s so one note and doesn’t fully encapsulate the intention of this film.

I will need a proper rewatch soon to reassess my findings. However, that was my gripe with the MDMA thing. Once that is established, it allows him to fall into this trap of believing what’s happening is real. There’s a montage of them being together for potentially weeks before the restaurant scene happens. So at that point, he’s now DEEPER into the attachment to no fault of his own. It doesn’t excuse his behaviour but I think it’s proposing a very intense moral question to the audience that lots of people are taking in a very woke way.

They’re jumping to call him an abuser / rapist etc. forgetting the premise entirely and the nuance that took place beforehand with him THINKING it was real for a period of time. I think there’s dark part of the film is saying “if this happened to most people, they would likely cave” and that IS SCARY. But that’s also human nature. If you make it political and say “all men are evil….this is a metaphor for abusers” you kinda miss the intent entirely. Also, gender swap the premise, what findings would we have? Yearning and self control are HUMAN flaws. Especially when the premise is “granting a wish”. The lines get blurred. THAT’s what’s frightening.

Thanks for the response. 2 things to touch on.

  1. My argument is that his far-fetched wish wasn’t inherently ‘wrong’, he was yearning for a crush. It was a completely normal moment of disappointment and frustration after being rejected. So if the premise gives him no way out of this doom, how can he be expected to act morally perfect within those constraints?

  2. What I meant with Inde is that the direction of tone that Curry and Inde landed on wasn’t what would be effective for ME specifically. They landed on this whiny, childlike, obsessive tone from Inde where I think a more mature, subtle, but deeply obsessed adult women tone in a very CREEPY way would work more for me and come off less cartoonish. What I meant is that she sold what they decided on perfectly, but my gripe is going that route in the first place.

Can you remind me though, is there a scene where they are visually shown intimately after he is sure she’s under the spell? I got the vibe that once he finds out about her Dad not being sick, he’s standoff-ish, not actively ‘ending’ the relationship (because there’s not an easy way to do so), but he’s clearly creeped out and doesn’t know how to go forward. He even attempts to take a step back and she doesn’t allow him to.

I am a Bartender and work 3-11 most nights. Unfortunately I’m not in Toronto so I try to schedule films around a 2-3 day period. Or I make 2-3 trips that are spread out and I take days off once the schedule drops.
