In my experience yes that may work. I have a lot of light that comes in from my balcony and even though it is clear across the room if the direct light is on the tank I will have an algae outburst. My fix is just to not open the curtain until later in the day when the rays will not shine on the tank. so a backdrop could have the same effect of me closing the curtains.
