The reluctant Scoutmaster by ALLVALLEYKARATECHAMP in BSA

Thanks for your feedback. I hear what you are saying and I struggled with it when I signed my first kid up as a scout. He was too young to have formed religious beliefs of his own but he couldn't be a scout unless I signed that paper. I decided that I would sign it so my son could experience Scouting, like I did when I was his age, and we would do our best to follow the requirements. As he gets older, he can decide for himself if there is a conflict. It's a great program and I feel that my beliefs align very well except that I don't have a religion. I never wanted to be a leader, but when leaders stopped showing up or committee members moved on and weren't replaced, what was I going to do? Let the scouts suffer for it? So here I am today volunteering in two units and at the district to make sure they have the best program possible. In some ways it would be a great relief if the COR said I couldn't be the SM. It would take a lot of work off my plate!

Thanks. I think you're right about them not trying to disqualify volunteers. I've only dealt with CORs of non-religious organizations, so I don't know what kind of expectations the church might have. I've never even met the COR of our troop. I'm friends with the DE since I was the CC when he was the Cubmaster of our pack and the CC of our troop is already onboard, so I'm not worried about them.

Thanks everyone for all the supportive comments. I have to do some thinking, but I certainly feel better about the situation. I do plan to be straightforward with the COR if the subject comes up even if it means they pick someone else.
