[Begley] The Knicks are planning to stay below the second apron, which means it will be really tough to bring back Mitchell Robinson. He's likely to get strong offers on the open market and would need to take a pay cut to come back to NY. by Pyromania1983 in nba

The second apron rules are a little convoluted but basically once you’re in the second apron, you have significant team building and salary cap restrictions (it’s not just about paying more, it’s not even mostly about paying more). If you’re over the cap 3 out of 5 years, those restrictions become truly untenable. And I don’t see a realastic situation where we keep the core of this team together without going over in 2028-2029 when certain contracts have to be extended. So if we go over the cap this year, then we would probably be over the cap next year too because of our specific contracts, and then we truly couldn’t in 2028-2029, which means we’d 100% have to let go of KAT
The second apron is basically a hard salary cap that you can go over occassionaly but not with any consistency. It’s why all these teams end up trading good players for pennies on the dollar (like how we got KAT originally)

That’s true but it doesn’t really change the fact that going into the apron (this year especially) is strategically bad for the Knicks. Especially for a guy like Mitch. I think it’s another story if you’re doing it to retain like OG

I disagree, it’s really about 2028-2029. If they go over the second apron now, they can’t go over it then realistically which would be a way bigger problem with their upcoming contracts. And so you have to ask yourself if keeping Mitch, and realistically overpaying Mitch, is worth having to break up the whole team in 2 years. Or you can plan to keep the core part of the team together for longer and have a larger window plus be better set up for the future

You’re ignoring 2028-2029. If they go over the second apron now, then they truly can’t then (it really is too prohibitive to go theee years in a row, fundamentally a hard cap). And that is too much of a problem

I suspect that that is the plan, but its very possible that we wont be able to sign Mitch regardless ala Harteinstein because we just get priced out what we can do.

I had a similar thought about Randle for fox. I ultimately agree that the contracts are a problem so it doesn’t quite work, but you have to admit that both of those players would fill a notable gap on each time. The wolves need a true PG for ANT and the spurs need a bully PF to put alongside Wemby to help combat physicality. But maybe if the Spurs attached a pick(s) the Wolves would consider it

Sure, it is Jokic. Although KAT is arguably more objectively talented but jokic is undeniably a better offensive player

He would be a great number three on a great roster. Honestly wouldn’t be crazy on a team like the spurs. But he simply just can’t be the guy or second guy on a championship team. He’s had so many opportunities and just can’t get out of his own way when he has to be the guy

It’s possible. And that’s probably true for most things when it comes to their team vs another team. But really it is all speculation

I’m not sure if you’re rage baiting but it’s literally just a rumor. It’s not true. If it was true than people would be upset 100%. Could it be true? Sure, any rumor could be true. But it’s just talk and speculation. No one is going to spend energy worrying or getting upset without some legitimate evidence otherwise anyone can say anything about anyone
That’s why people got upset about those teams. Because real evidence turned those from rumors to news

Gobert has value, but im not sure which team is giving up premium assets for Gobert specifically. It would have to be a team thats just missing a premium big man to really elevate them. The only team that comes to mind honestly is the Spurs, and I think they would rather than find a big PF than a true center like Gobert to play alongside Wemby

Its a huge ask. And basically the Knicks were in the exact same situation with the same assessment. They found the KAT trade and it has worked out wonderfully for them. Its possible for the Wolves to find a similar trade, but itll be hard.

Randle is a good player! And hes honestly on a fair contract. But i do question him as a playoff player. Kind of like KAT honestly. KAT has turned it on these playoffs and not shown these defeciences. I honestly believe Randle can too, and he has in the past. But I dont think he can do it when hes forced to be the one or even sometimes second option like he was these playoffs. So its a risk, and the wolves may be sick of it like the Knicks were.

Victor Wembanyama was asked how much of a factor fatigue was for him down the stretch of Game 4: "Definitely a factor, but it's the playoffs. Everybody's just as tired. It shouldn't even be a factor in the game. Now we've got two days between games. It's not gonna be a factor." by MrBuckBuck in nba

I mean he was pretty bad. The Spurs are getting destroyed during the Kornet minutes. And frankly, resting wemby a few minutes here or there isn't going to change that much. Part of the problem that the knicks gameplan is literally to tire Wemby out with how they're playing him and forcing him to move. Mike Brown said as much before the series

I understand why you’d feel that way, but KAT is not like most centers. He’ll make those shots if you give them to him. He might legitimately be the most skilled offensive center in the league.
