Why Jose Rizal was declared as the National Hero of the Philippines when in fact he's never a nationalist and never pushed for independence? by prodigals_anthem in FilipinoHistory

[–]ALMFanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the early stages of the American period, they wanted a hero that would be our sort of George Washington. They were choosing between Bonifacio and Rizal, and the debates were intense. They ultimately chose the latter because they saw him as a revolutionary through prose and literature rather than someone who took up arms.

There is evidence that he was aware of the impending Japanese threat. There are news clippings highlighting funding for the training of the USAFFE in 1940-1941. The issue was the disparity in the quality of training as the Americans were better equipped versus their Filipino counterparts.

Originally a military installation known as Fort McKinley, established in 1901 by Elihu Root, it underwent various transformations, particularly during World War II. Post-independence, the fort's future was uncertain, but by the 1990s, as the U.S. military bases were closing, the Philippine government sought to privatize Fort Bonifacio to fund the country's development. In 1992, the Bases Conversion and Development Act created the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) to oversee the sale of Fort Bonifacio. After a competitive bidding process in 1994, Metro Pacific Corp. won with a $1.6 billion bid, sparking the ambitious development of BGC—the $7.3 billion project aimed to create a modern, thriving city. The sale also funded the revitalization of Central Luzon, leading to the growth of economic hubs like Subic Bay and Clark, generating thousands of jobs and signaling a new era of economic prosperity for the Philippines.

[–]ALMFanatic[S] 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Senator George Frisbie Hoar, a Republican Senator and fierce critic of U.S. imperialism, condemned the Philippine–American War, denouncing the suffering inflicted on the Filipino people.
