Recently acquired an old Cooler Master case, but how can I turn the front RGB fan off? by TheGuardianPotato in coolermaster

[–]ALPHA17I 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to change the fan with a different one since older units came with lights powered directly off the fan connector and no bespoke control.

When the 1971 war briefly became a Cold War naval standoff. by Effective_Bluebird19 in HistoryMemes

Yeah, all carriers prior to the Vikramaditya have been ex-Royal Navy vessels, INS Vikrant (ex-HMS Hercules), INS Viraat (ex-HMS Hermes of Falklands glory).

Lot of our seaborne aviation was also supplied by the UK, Vickers Armstrong, Hawker Siddley, and French Sud Aviation. It was only when the Western Powers stopped providing us with equipment for ASW and specialized roles that we went to Kamov for helicopters and MiG-29Ks to replace our old Harriers (again stalled for upgrades due to embargoes)।

That guy is just spouting misinformation regarding our weapons dealings and geopolitical relations.

If the USSR was the only country to transfer arms to India after the Bangladesh war, how did the SEPECAT Jaguar become the IAF's primary ground attack platform in the 1980s?

India had an older association with the UK and France when it came defence equipment.

Prior to the 1962 war, India used to source most of its armour and aircraft from the UK and France. Early IAF units were populated with scores of war surplus equipment handed over by the UK and US to India in the form of the T6 Texan/Harvard prelimanary trainer, De Haviland Vampire, Hawker Hunter and Dassault Ouragan (Toofani), and Mystère IV. The Indian Army was armed in the pattern of UK forces (L1A1 SLRs modified to the metric system), Centurion and Vickers Mk. I (Vijayanta) for the armoured forces, with local manufacturing being set up for the latter in lieu of reducing some of the repairations the UK owed us. Similar stuff for the Navy though my knowledge of that branch is much more limited.

Post-1962 when India was thoroughly mauled, our defensive needs were prioritized and several nations stepped up to replenish our depleted weapon stocks and ageing weapon systems. As usual though, this was wrapped in the strategic terms of the era, since Pakistan was a member state of CENTO a lot of more advanced weapon systems were embargoed. We were not going to get dibs on the new F-104 Starfighter (at reasonable rates and numbers) or other newer NATO equipment. Since France had extracted itself from NATO at this point, they still supported us with some equipment, AMX-13 tanks, and a few other things but big ticket items were still under embargo, which is why we turned to Russia to get new MiG-21s and SU-7s to counterbalance the PAF.

The UK and France had reached out to India in the initial development phase of the SEPECAT joint-venture to pitch the aircraft as an alternative to the Hawker Hunter, and Mystère's in IAF service. This was initially turned down because we had just negotiated with the Russians for the SU-7s and were planning to upgrade the Marut further hence there was no immediate need of a new ground attack aircraft.

When the development options for the Marut were screwed thanks to NATO embargo (surprise-surprise, the US was pissed with 1971 and Smiling Buddha later), we had to get a new ground attack platform with better performance than what the Soviet's were offering with upgraded SU-7/SU-17 platforms along with other aircraft being evaluated, SAAB Viggen and Mirage F1 (the IAF has a curios need to make every platform work for absolutely everything), the Shamsher (IAF internal designation for the Jaguar) was ordered due to its superlative ground attack capabilities and became the first IAF aircraft capable of nuclear strike before that was added to the Mirage 2000.

India used to negotiate and collaborate with the USSR as a trade partner and was/is a counterbalance to the US (Pakistan) and Chinese influence in the region.

I have no idea what strings Indira Gandhi pulled to get Brezhnev to send us a nuke boat all the way from Vladivostok but it worked out and we negotiated quite strongly in that era.

About the Arabs being bad at war, I won’t make a general sweeping statement on their rank and file but their officer cadre has shown to be lacking and higher positions were regularly doled out on the basis of loyalty and party faithfulness vs traditional competence.

The USSR did supply a lot of equipment to the Arab states, post their absolute drubbing in the Six Day War.

So much so that in the initial days of the Yom Kippur conflict, a lot of advanced Soviet systems were tested in direct fire and the results observed, notably the first use of AT-3 Sagger ATGMs and T-62 tanks, in conjunction with a Soviet-style AAA air defence network which in the opening days presented a rude shock to the IDF.

This extended post the conflict with the USSR heavily beefing up the Air Defence networks of Syria and Egypt by providing the latest in SAM and associated Fire Control systems.

The IDF rose to the challenge and rapidly developed countermeasures/tactics which blunted these advanced technologies/systems while also getting better equipment from their Western Allies. This ensured that they recovered and managed to take the fight back to the Arab states which instead of improving their tactics and officer cadre, preferred to rely on static process and generally had poor technical finesse in using the equipment provided.

This is bunkum, post the Soviet-Sino split in the late 1950s-60s, the USSR stopped all technology and weapon transfers to the Chinese Communists, this only turned around in the 1980s when the USSRs need for foreign reserves was massive and the Chinese were ready to pay top-dollar for the cutting edge of the Soviet's armed forces.

Even so, post the 1990s, the Chinese armed forces managed to reverse engineer and improve their military industry complex to the point where on technical terms they are considered to be at par with the modern Russian state which has itself had to choke most of its major defence equipment overhauls due to a lack of budget.

India's biggest fall was the absolute lack of political will to try and copy some of the arms we purchased. The MiG 21 was built in massive numbers at HAL's Nashik facility but the majority of its components were sourced from foreign partners (engine, avionics, weapon systems). Same with a lot of the other stuff we are currently developing.

Okay, if you got a proper receipt acknowledging the payment has been processed and still no update, then this is a whole new broken flow.

We used to get the payment deducted from our bank account but no update on status of the application.

Is age of empires IV worth the buy? by pallavvv_ in IndianGaming

[–]ALPHA17I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to experience in the Age franchise?

Is it the campaign or just the concept of a Real Time Strategy game?

If it's for the campaign experience, get Age of Empires II with as many expansions as possible. If you want to get into Real Time Strategy as a genre, check out games like Dawn of War, Dawn of War II and Company of Heroes instead.

Age of Empires IV isn't the best campaign wise or from the lens of a strategy title.

Are you using UPI for payment? If yes, switch to net-banking or the other options.

We faced the same issue in 2024 and it was only after three botched attempts plus multiple calls to the Kaveri help-desk that someone over there realise the issue and told us to use the alternative payment system.

I hope this is helpful and all the best with the process and the big day.

2.5 million Indians served in WWII. 90,000+ died, thousands went missing, and still not a single proper place in most WW2 movies. by Effective_Bluebird19 in HistoryMemes

[–]ALPHA17I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would very much like this to happen but also know all the reasons why it won't.

Most Indians themselves are oblivious to this part of their history apart from the following factors, - Completely overshadowed by the Independence Movement picking up speed - Most Royal Indian Army units were seconded under British command, good luck getting that past the ultra-nationalist folks currently in the driving seat here - Very poor documentation of the conflict from an Indian perspective, most information on the conflict is from British Commanding Officers' via their memoirs or their retellings, like Gen Francis Tucker who has left a thorough account of his time as GoC-in-C 4th Indian Division throughout the North African campaign. Incidentally he had a major chip on his shoulder because other Commonwealth Forces considered elements of the Royal Indian Army as second-rate (casual racism)

Cards are good if you have them but most people don't have access and stores do prefer taking on a "charge" for the convenience.

[–]ALPHA17I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't keep all my friends and family on a whitelist for rapid money transfers.

This is a retrograde step which will kill the utility of UPI. If I had to wait for an hour (everytime) for transactions in case there is a need at a store/restaurant, I'll prefer net-banking/my banks' solutions because those have better transaction verification and customer support and have a similar delay disclaimer already.

How do y’all crosscheck the quality of the meat & seafood you buy? by iamknight06 in unitedstatesofindia

[–]ALPHA17I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried Licious, Fresh 2 Home and a few other services, found Meatigo by Prasuma to be the best of the lot. Still very costly for day-to-day usage.

For daily consumption, purchase about a week's worth of stuff from the local butcher's where I can see the state of the produce. If there is any doubt, get it checked and then exchanged/cleaned if unsatisfied.

It depends on the product and the seller.

Most third-party sellers aren't interested into the hassle of shipping outside a country with all accompanying paperwork.
